Android :: Low Level (Voltage) Access Of Headphone Input
Sep 23, 2010
Is there an API in android to access the headphone hardware input? Ideally I'd like to be able to directly read the incoming voltage/current. Accessing this in either Java or the NDK would be fine. Preferably if there's a way to do this on non rooted phones.

We all know about Apple asking Google to not include multi-touch but according to an Apple employee they also asked not to include the 3.5mm input due to an interesting patent. http://www.googleandblog.com/why-no-g1-35mm-headphone-jack/3750/

This is weird, and I haven't installed anything new since this has started happening.
I listen to podcasts a lot on my Moment thru the cassette tape headphone jack in my car. I use Meridian for my podcast player. Starting about mid day, when I plug the headphone jack into my moment with a podcast loaded into Meridian, the $%#in Nuance Voice control activates and asks me for a command. Then, seemingly unprompted, it will open up my music player and start playing a song at the same time as the podcast. Then, after I've killed the music player, when I unplug the jack, it does the same thing. I've tried rebooting, and it's still doing the same thing..

I was wondering if it is possible to intercept keyboard input on a global level on Android. For example a user types in text into an edittext (does not matter which application) I would like to access said text to check for certain words. Is this even possible with Android's security model (yes I am aware this kind of feature could be used for various wrong things too).

As usual, these are update.zip format. Rename to update.zip, place on root of sdcard, and install (don't forget to 'allow').
My advice to you, in selecting a kernel, is to #1 try the lowV varieties first. Then select the slowest kernel that exceeds what you expect to run on a day to day basis. So if you plan on running 800-1000, run the 1.0lv kernel.
If for some reason you get stuck on the 'M' while booting, first try switching to the mediumV kernel. If that does not work, back the speed down, say from 1.25 to 1.2, or 1.2, to 1.1, etc.
5-slot Low Voltage
1.0Ghz (125/250/550/800/1000)
1.1Ghz (125/250/550/800/1100)
1.2Ghz (125/250/550/800/1200)
1.25Ghz (125/250/550/800/1250)
5-slot Medium Voltage
1.0Ghz (125/250/550/800/1000)
1.1Ghz (125/250/550/800/1100)
1.2Ghz (125/250/550/800/1200)
1.25Ghz (125/250/550/800/1250)
7-slot Low Voltage
1.0Ghz (125/250/550/700/800/900/1000)
1.1Ghz (125/250/550/800/900/1000/1100)
1.2Ghz (125/250/550/800/1000/1100/1200)

I'm having trouble developing an app, while it works in API level 10, it does not in API level 7. I wondery why and I've been looking for a site that summarizes the differences, or the new features from one API level to another and cannot find it.
09-04 04:24:21.485: E/AndroidRuntime(6834): Uncaught handler: thread main exiting due to uncaught exception
09-04 04:24:21.510: E/AndroidRuntime(6834): java.lang.VerifyError: [code]....
There seems to be a problem with an uncaught exception and reflection, although....why does it work on API level 10?

I am not sure at what point this setting has been introduced, I have seen it on 2.1 and 2.2. It has "voice recognizer settings" in it, in there you can set Language, SafeSearch and Block offensive words.
How do I access those settings from API? Especially I want to know if the language is set to English.
Also can someone clarify at which version this setting has been introduced? I noticed that voice recognition was using Locale setting before.

I would like to show a custom input field (specifically, one containing only 9-0 and two extra buttons containing decimal separator (, or .) and a delete button). I could create a custom IME, but (as far as I know) that would have to be set by the user as the system-wide input method. Is there a way to implement an input method and bind it to a specific input field?

Because if it doesn't, then battery life shouldn't be affected.

I have several USB-MicroUSB cables (some OEM Motorola, some other brands), several 12 volt-USB converters, several cars, and several devices that accept MicroUSB connection for power. With everything other than my Droid (including a Blackberry and a GPS unit) every combination of cable and 12volt converter works. With the Droid, all of the combinations will turn on the screen (indicating the Droid knows a cable has been connected), but only a few combinations will actually charge the Droid. The only possible explanation I have come up with for this is that the Droid has some sort of minimum current requirement, and that some converter/car/cable combinations are unable to meet this requirement. So, what is the minimum voltage and current that will allow the Droid to charge?

I kno usually low voltage kernels are ment to save battery but on some phones can it do the opposite cause I'm trying adamz on low and I feel like I'm burning battery faster without even doin anyything on the phone. So could the low voltage kernel be the cause?

I forgot to bring my Droid Incredible charger with me to work. Since the battery was getting low I decided to use my BlackBerry Storm charger on it. The ports are the same, and it goes in without any problems. However, after doing this, it became difficult to unlock. Swiping down usually didn't work. If I was able to swipe down I couldn't get past the "password puzzle." I thought the phone was locked up so I pulled the battery, but it still wouldn't swipe after coming back up. I took the charger out and realized I could swipe again. I repeated this, again plugging the charger in and again I was unable to swipe to unlock. Is there a voltage difference between the BB charger and the Incredible charger? It seems like it was charging it fine. JuicePlotter shows a charge while it was plugged in.

I just installed Cyanogen from DroidMod and while I was at it, I installed the p3 1ghz low voltage kernel. So far, I'm pretty happy. I'm not sure it's been a huuuge battery saver, but I think it's helped. Wifi and bluetooth have been on all day. A few phone calls. Lots of texting and emails. Also some market apps downloaded as well as files transferred on/off. At 8:30 my battery life is at 50%, which is pretty damn good considering how much better that is from strait out of the box on release day.
I'm running 800mhz overclocked, instead of 1ghz to save some power. Should I switch to a different kernel since I'm not even using the 1 ghz slot?
What's the best low voltage kernel for battery life, overclocking included? No need to even bring up stock speeds...

Possibly a simple answer to this question -- can the USB charger that ships with the Droid X be used with 220 volts in addition to 110 volts? I am planning to take my Droid X to India and need to figure out if I should plug the charger into a 110/220V travel converter, or if the USB charger is already dual voltage and I'll only need a plug point adapter. The voltage specified on the charger has 240V as the upper range, which leads me to think it should work with 220V.

I live in the UK and have ordered my Nexus One from the US, without a UK adapter. My question is what voltage the standard AC adapter uses, as the UK runs 240V typically. I can get hold of a cheap US-UK power adapter that doesn't do any voltage changes, so I was wondering whether that would be sufficient. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I'd like to get a second battery and an external charger, this seems like a cheap solution while keeping OEM parts. The only thing I'm really questioning is the voltage output of the external charger to the battery. Any way to tell if it will charger correctly? If you know the answer, please provide reasoning.

I was wondering if there is a way to set the minimum voltage cutoff (when the device forcefully shuts off), if it's device specific then we are working with the HTC Aria. The reason why I ask this, is that I have a device with a 12 Ah (that's 12,000 mAh) battery. Now I'll be straight, I'm an EE so software is not my forte, I work with analogue circuits, not software. So my knowledge of programming is nil. I was going to go the extra mile and make a flyback regulator to keep the voltage at 4 volts all the time (I can get it to work down to .5 volt if I wanted), but did not want the extra mass. (Already have 3 long C cell size sized batteries, don't need a PWM board on top of that). If this is the wrong thread, call me a noob and kick me in the nuts a few times, will ya? BTW the minimum voltage we are working with is 3 volts.
