Android : ListActivity - View Content Is "disappearing"

I'm having a problem with my ListView in a ListActivity with a Custom ArrayAdapter.
When the ListActivity becomes hidden (paused, whatever), the data that was present in the ArrayAdpater seems to go away. Rotation works fine, but I am only assigning the array in the ArrayAdapter in the onCreate(), nowhere else. The array is stored in a global static so the array itself should be fine. but the ListView seems to be pitching the array somewhere after the onCreate in the Activity Lifecycle.
I'm thinking the array should be re-assigned on one of the onResume(), onStart() or onRestart(), but I'm looking for a more concrete reason as this happens only rarely and never with my Cursor based Adapters.

I would like to write a rather simple content application which displays a list of textual items (along with a small pic).I have a standard menu in which each menu item represents a different category of textual items (news, sports, leisure etc.).Pressing a menu item will display a list of textual items of this category.Now, having a separate ListActivity for each category seems like an overkill (or does it?)
Naturally, it makes much more sense to use one ListActivity and replace the data of its adapter when each category is loaded.My concern is when "back" is pressed. The adapter is loaded with items of the current category and now I need to display list of the previous category (and enable clicking on list items too)
Since I have only one activity - I thought of backup and load mechanism in onPause() and onResume() functions as well as making some distinction whether these function are invoked as a result of a "new" event (menu item selected) or by a "back" press.This seems very cumbersome for such a trivial usage.Am I missing something here?

I got a ListActivity. I update the activity using onContentChanged() API. My problem is that each time I call the above API the list scrolls to the top. Is there any easy way to turn this "feature" off?

I am trying to put together a modal box with a scrollable list of checkable items and an OK and Cancel button at the bottom for the user to select filters from. It seems the simplest way to do things like this in Android is to reuse API components (widgets, layouts, etc) and the closest one I can find to this looks to be the ListPreference, which basically does exactly what I want (I can even work with storing the data in SharedPreferences). The problem is that I'm not launching this modal box from a PreferenceActivity, but rather will be launching it from either of two activities: a ListActivity and a MapActivity.

I have a WebView inside the ScrollView. The content of WebView dyanamically changes when it displays different html page. I have the following issue: For example I have A.html, and B.html. The content of B.html is larger than A.html, so the page is longer. When WebView load B.html, the ScrollView stretches its size to enable itself scroll for B.html, then if I go back to A.html, ScrollView doesn't resize itself. (The scroll area is exceed the content of A.html) What I want to have, is dynamic change the scroll area of scroll view to fit the webview's content.

I'm trying to create a listview containing conversations in chat bubbles, and each chat bubbles are rows in the list view. So what I have is an avatar on the left, and a chat bubble on the right. Then in the chat bubble, I have a textview for name, a textview for content, and a textview for time. The problem is, I cannot adjust the height of the chat bubble such that the bottom edge is just below the textview for time. In the chatBubble, I have this line that does not work android:layout_alignBottom="@+id/timeLabel" because timeLabel is a textview created after chatBubble. If I place chatBubble tags right below timeLabel, the height of chatBubble will be just right because lf the layout_alignBottom, but chatBubble covers all the text created before it.
Is there a way I can create the chatBubble last, and bring the view to the background? Or is there a better way to do this?....................

May I know is it possible I use the resource id but I didnt set the Content View in the activity?
For example: abc.xml have one TextView id = "R.id.Text". Can I use the use TextView name = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.Text); method in the activity which was setContentView(R.layout.def);?

I've got a tab host activity started from a home screen shortcut. When my application starts it downloads information from a server using an AsyncTask. In the onPostExecute method of the AsyncTask I call setContentView to display the TabHost.When I start the homescreen shortcut by tapping on the shortcut using my finger everything works as expected, I download the information from the server and display the TabHost with the information in the tabs. However starting the application by navigating to the shortcut with the mouse wheel and then clicking on the shortcut with the mouse wheel leads to a trap in the framework code as soon as my application starts. This looks like a simple fix since mCurrentView is null at the time that this method is called - can this issue be addressed? Does anyone know of any workarounds?

First post: This is probably a dumb question. Why do I get a white screen with a circle and a gray triangle when trying to view flash content? Example: Zinio or Olivesoftware. Motodroid, Android 2.2, Flash 10.1.92.8 from Market.

This may seem like a stupid question but I need to be sure. I was wondering if it was possible to pro-grammatically change the Content Provider used when making a query given a Content URI. The reason being I need to know if it's possible to force the Calendar/Contacts applications to read from a different database via a different Content Provider temporarily while my application is running, so that I can reuse those applications to display my own data. Since the Content URI s are hard coded in each of these applications the only way it might be possible is if we could somehow temporarily change the Content Provider used for a given URI. I know this probably isn't possible, I just need to show it isn't. Could someone confirm this can't be done?

I am having a hard time understanding content providers. In the notepad example and others, the content provider never even declares its CONTENT_URI anywhere inside itself, yet the docs say to publicly declare this. It's declared in a different class. So when an activity queries a content provider with a CONTENT_URI, how does Android know which one I want. I see no link between a content provider and its CONTENT_URI declared in another class.
I also don't how to think about intents and content providers. I know that you don't call an intent on a content provider. But an activity queries a content provider without an intent, and an activity has a mimetype attribute in the manifest that would seem to tie it to a content provider.

I'm trying to create an application that has 3 tabs. Under the middle tab should be a ListView. It starts up fine (on the left tab) but when I click the middle tab it crashes.
The other two tabs are static data specified in the main.xml file. But the middle tab, I try to create dynamically. Here's the code from the main onCreate function:

I get the feeling that I'm supposed to create the Intent with something like Intent.ACTION_VIEW but this is where I get lost. If this is the problem, I could try stuff until it works, but I'd prefer to understand why.
Or is ContactListActivity supposed to override something ?

I have a problem with rotation, during my ListActivity is loading data from the network. To do it I use a background thread which recovers data and put them inside an ArrayList. While this thread works, there is Progress dialog activated in foreground. For the rotation I use the method with onRetainNonConfigurationInstance() to save my ArrayList's state. After android calls this method, I call dismiss() on the progress dialog on onStop(). Then the activity is created as new with onCreate(), but it use the getLastNonConfigurationInstance() to recover the ArrayList's state. Now, my problem. If I rotate from portrait to lanscape when the download is terminated and I see the data in portrait yet, everything is ok. If I rotate during progress dialog is showing I have two cases: 1- onRetainNonConfigurationInstance() saves the arraylist fully recovered, the thread terminates and everything is ok. 2- onRetainNonConfigurationInstance() saves the arraylist empty, i think the download isn't finished yet. The onCreate is called and my list is empty, the thread terminates, but i don't see anything in my list. If I am in this case and I still rotate from landscape to portrait now I can see my list full with all the data. Why? Where am I wrong?

I create a ListView in my activity and set its ChoiceMode to CHOICE_MODE_SINGLE, I also set its layout to simple_list_item_single_choice. But when i click on it onItemSelected() is never called and getCheckedItemPosition() returns -1. Why? the sample List10.java of ApiDemos uses ListActivity works well which just set the same as I done in my app. Any ideas?

I want to create a custom list view in my application. I want it to lay over the top of the application screen, with portions of the screen not filled by the listview showing the underlying application. I've been reading about ListActivity, how it can be started to handle item selected callbacks. I've also read about people simply inserting onClick handlers into the listview as it is drawn. I'm trying to decide the best way to proceed. Is it "dirty" to attach onClick handlers to the rows of a listview? It doesn't seem like the best approach, for instance, it only handles Touch Mode, not the DPAD clicks. This approach doesn't seem like what the architects had in mind. On the other hand, I don't see a good way that I can start a list activity and still have access to all the application variables I need. Do I pass the application in the context and refer back to it from even handlers after casting the context back to it's original class?

I have written an application that uses a listview activity. but now that i think more about it, i would like to have other items included to give the status of the app, etc that i just want to be displayed and not scrolled so it wont be entered into the database. does anyone have a good link to an example for this>

I have an ListActivity that I wan't to add a logo to at the top above the list but I'm unsuccessful. This is what my layout looks like at the moment.

Then I add an drawable to the ImageView logo in onCreate. I've managed to show either the ListView or the ImageView but never both of them in the same LinearLayout. Is it possible to add other views together with a ListView?

I am using a ListActivity. Each list entry contains an ImageView and a TextView. I have a huge list and has been getting Out of Memory errors once I scroll through a fair amount of them. I figured I need to reduce the size of the images but I am wondering what happens to the objects once the list entry is hidden from view (as i scroll down the list). I have read somewhere that the list entry objects are automatically re-use. But what happens to the drawable images which were loaded into the ImageView? IF the ImageView object is reused, what happens to the binary image? Are they freed automatically? How do I prevent the OutOfMemory exception? I want to do something similar like the Android Market. As one scroll downwards the images are loaded and new entries are loaded. The Markey can have a long list which one can scroll down and all the way back up again without any problem. The only difference being mine throws OutOfMemory Exception. Advice anyone?
