Android : Java Program That Runs On Startup In Background?
May 27, 2009
How do you create a Java program that runs on startup, in the background? I need to create this, or some type of java/c service.
I've created this for an iPhone, and I'm porting my app to the android.

Essentially, my program has two EditTexts, a Button, and a TextView. You input a number/string into the EditText, and an output is supposed to be shown in the TextView. However, all i get is a 'There is no Department'.

I want to close my application, so that it no longer runs in the background.How to do that? Is this good practice on Android platform?If I rely on the "back" button, it closes the app, but it stays in background. There is even application called "TaskKiller" just to kill those apps in the background.

Anyone have a favorite simple paid / free application they use while jogging? I noticed some remarks that accuracy seems to differ across different jogging applications, and some stop tracking if you get a phone call or text message. Any GPS jogging applications that run also in the background so you can call or text?

I have a simple activity program in android. Basically the class just extends Activity.
But when I start it I get a ClassCastException in the constructor of my class. I don't even have a constructor defined, so it must be in the constructor of the superclass which is Activity. Unfortunately the debugger doesn't give any detailed information on what class it is trying to cast. Here is the stacktrace:
Thread [<1> main] (Suspended (exception RuntimeException))
ActivityThread$PackageInfo.makeApplication(boolean, Instrumentation) line: 649
ActivityThread.handleBindApplication(ActivityThread$AppBindData) line: 4232
ActivityThread.access$3000(ActivityThread, ActivityThread$AppBindData) line: 125
ActivityThread$H.handleMessage(Message) line: 2071
ActivityThread$H(Handler).dispatchMessage(Message) line: 99
Looper.loop() line: 123
ActivityThread.main(String[]) line: 4627
Method.invokeNative(Object, Object[], Class, Class[], Class, int, boolean) line: not available [native method]
Method.invoke(Object, Object...) line: 521
ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run() line: 868
ZygoteInit.main(String[]) line: 626
NativeStart.main(String[]) line: not available [native method]
And when I look into this runtimeexception I get:
detailMessage "Unable to instantiate application com.test.MyApp: java.lang.ClassCastException: com.test.MyApp" (id=830067694464)
The only code is:
package com.test;
import android.app.Activity;
public class MyApp extends Activity {
}

I've read several example programs and tutorials to try and solve my problem but they all seem to go the same way.I've used a couple Activities and xml documents to create a menu that loads when my game starts. When the user clicks the "Start The Game" button, it loads a new Activity that sets the view with my game thread and all of the game properties.I know this activity works because I've run it alone as its own project, but every way I've tried to start it after the Menu, I get a nullPointerException and it force closes.I read the SurfaceViewOverlay tutorial and attempted to use that implementation, but I'm using a SurfaceView, not a GLSurfaceView. I'm debating rewriting my entire program to use OpenGL but I figured I would see if anyone else knows what I'm doing wrong here.If you need the code snippets I can paste some here, but it's not really the specific code that's wrong, I think it's the way I'm using(abusing) the language.

I've been working on an application for the past week or so, and when I went to test it the other day, my console read the following to me:
CODE:............
The icon for the program is present in my emulator, and I have added android.permission.ACCESS_CHECKIN_PROPERTIES to my Manifest.
For some reason the emulator tells me that the program is not installed "on this phone" when I try to run the program using the icon in the emulator. Which I find interesting considering that the console says it was installed successfully..

I am new at android development and java programming, but I have decided to program a drinking game app in android. This app basically simulates a deck a cards, a player clicks a button to draw a card then based on the card thats drawn the player plays a drinking game (ie takes 1 drink, takes 2 drinks ect).
I have the main program in one java file, and the code that shuffles the card deck and puts the card sequence in an array in other java file. My problem is that whenever a class from the other java file (classicMode.java) is called from the main program (fubar.java), my android program crashes and gives the error : "The application Drinking Game - FUBAR (process com.games.dg) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again". Code...

Could someone please suggest me a good/efficient way to communicate with the server. I could think of two options 1) Use http post methods to send data to a php script at the server which would later call the google api's written in another java program (jar)or use php to use google api's (if its possible) to find nearby restaurants and send the list back to client. 2) Use simple java socket programming. The server has a jar file that supports multi threading and it does the job of finding restaurants and sending the list.

While having my phone activated at the local Verizon store a pop-up came on the screen. Of course the lady there said it's nothing to worry about. Well since then I noticed every time I turn the phone on and at random times I get a pop-up that says "Sorry! The process com.htc.bg has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again". The only way I can close the pop-up is by pressing the "force close" button. I called HTC and they told me it's a warning for the background sync program and it's a bad phone. I called Verizon and they asked me to remove all the apps, perform a soft reset and try a factory data restore. Well after trying all things they are sending me a new phone. It's being overnighted tomorrow for Saturday morning delivery. And Verizon is actually paying for the overnight shipping which is a good thing considering it's not even a day old. The only thing that sucks is I'm gonna have to pay for another ZAGG screen protector to be installed. Hope this phone is better.

In Android, if I want to do some background work, what is the difference between
Creating a Service to do the work, and having the Activity start the Service VS. Creating a standard java class to do the work, and having the Activity create an object of the class and invoke methods, to do the work in separate thread.

OK, So I want to set the background to a transparent image and change the color of the background on an event firing. I can set the background image to a resource in an xml file, and I can also change the color of a TextView on event firing, but for some reason I can't do both at the same time. Do I need to create a drawable or something? Also, how do I reference the top level LinearLayout. I'm programming using eclipse JEE Galileo with the ADT Plugin and the android sdk. O.S. android 2.1-update1 (eclair). My friend can do it in actionscript and I have to do it in java to beat him lol.

Every time I start my phone it seems that every program in the app catalog starts up. Until I activate the Advanced Task Killer and shut them all down, the thing runs like a hog. I have quite a few programs installed, but I dont use them all all of the time. Why do they all start up and is there any way beside the ATK to stop them? Is there any way to modify the startup files?

I have an app that has a few checkboxes in the settings and then compiles a remote sql based on the checkboxes selected. i ran it in the emulator and it's fine. but then i exported it and published it as an app, and the same checked boxes aren't being passed correctly. i wonder if it's a caching issue or something. tried deleting the apks a few times and republish but to no avail. i "fake-edited" the source java and then export again, still no difference.
I'm kind of new to eclipse but is there a force build option? i only see build-automatically option under project but not sure how i can make sure that the apk exported is the same as run in the emulator
edit the emulator is version 1.5, and my phone is nexus one running 2.1- not sure if that makes a difference

Ok so here's the deal guys and gals, I am trying to have my phone assist me with my running. There are plenty of apps that will track my run via gps if I bring my phone on the run with me, but I don't wanna do that. I want to be able to map a course out, enter how long it took me, save the map and even share it with friends. Ideally the app would have the gps running features I mentioned above just on case I ever do start bringing my phone with me. Here is an example of what I mean in website form (unfortunately they make a sweet app for the iphone but their android version is pretty awful right now.MapMyRun.com -

When I am developing for Android and repeatedly running and/or debugging an Android app in the emulator then about every two hours or so I get an Out-of-memory exception, occasionally also an out-of - resources- or out-of-GWT-handles exception. At that point one can only stop and restart eclipse. Apparently the ADK must be doing something wrong, because I have been developing with Eclipse now for 5+ years and I normally never see this. ADT is a really the exception here. Is there any setting or patch that helps top avoid this? I have already given it more heap space (750M) to stretch the time between these hickups a bit, but that approach isn't really sustainable.
This is using Eclipse 3.5 (Galileo) and the Android SDK r06 running a FroYo AVD.

For my first application, the only testing I've really done to this point is on my Droid X. I want to think through the various hardware differences and come up with a testing plan that is representative of the Android landscape. My initial thought is to create a list of emulators that have unique qualities such as screen size and SDK levels. I've noticed very quickly how the UI of my application will need some adjustment when viewed on devices that don't carry a 4.3" screen. How have you approached this hurdle in your own development? After deleting a phone device from the emulator, I can no longer hit the green triangle button in eclipse and have it launch my application in the emulator. I had been developing for 2.0.1, but then decided to try my app out in 2.1. I created a phone device for 2.1 and tried running it. I encountered some problems. Eclipse pops up a dialog box: Problem Occurred, Launching "my app" had encountered a problem. An internal error occurred during: 'Launching my app". When I look at details, it says: An internal error occurred during: "Launching Pingo". java.lang.NullPointerException.
