Android : Program Crashes When I Call A Class From Another Java File

Oct 26, 2010

I am new at android development and java programming, but I have decided to program a drinking game app in android. This app basically simulates a deck a cards, a player clicks a button to draw a card then based on the card thats drawn the player plays a drinking game (ie takes 1 drink, takes 2 drinks ect).

I have the main program in one java file, and the code that shuffles the card deck and puts the card sequence in an array in other java file. My problem is that whenever a class from the other java file (classicMode.java) is called from the main program (fubar.java), my android program crashes and gives the error : "The application Drinking Game - FUBAR (process com.games.dg) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again". Code...

Is there anything the Dalvik VM supports (in terms of bytecode) which is not used currently because the .class files don't have it?

As an example, if people would write their own Source-to-DX converter for their functional language XYZ, would they be able to implement e. g. full tail calls although the .class file does support tail calls only under certain circumstances?

Android :: Service Unable To Call Java Class Methods / Way To Fix?

Jun 22, 2010

Hi, custom classes which are part of a framework, so nothing graphical. One of those (singleton) classes is a Logging class which send logs to my server. I noticed that even though I can call the classes methods in my service it actually won't be logging anything... In my specific example it's osmething like : Logger.getInstance().log("Whatever I want to Log"); Obviously the getInstance is a static method so it can be accessed from anywhere within my project right away.. I was wondering though why this method for example isn't getting called ? Also how do I debug a Service ? Btw I am using of IPC from one of my Activities which gets bound to the service and can start/stop the music for example...

Android :: Make Adapter Class To Choose .Java File Depending On Firmware Version

I was wondering if i just made activity like this if it would work sort of like a "portal" and pick the activity to load depending on the SDK so there is no crash or compile errors. Are there any changes I should make to my code? Maybe anyone out there that's had to do this before.

Android :: Android / Java - Call Function In Separate *.java File?

Aug 16, 2010

I do an import of the full package name / java file, and if I do a <classname>.<method>, SOMETIMES I can get it to access - other times I get a lot of can't use a static in a non static bunch of talk. I'll admit I'm new to Java, so what do I need to do? Call a class instance first, then call my methods? I'm rather confused by this, as I want to put all of my 'functions' into a FunctionsList.java file, and all of my main Activity (UI) into a MyActivity.java file.

For example:
<MyActivity.java>
import com.example.FunctionsList;
private class MyActivity extends Activity {
FunctionsList.function();
}

9/10 times I get that static/non-static error. If I put all of my functions into MyActivity.java, I have zero problems!

Android :: Source Not Found - Program Crashes

Aug 30, 2010

I'm getting an error in my Android app that says "source not found" and crashes the program. I've already read a number of posts saying that the solution is to download the android source code and load that up in Eclipse, but I tried to no avail. Here is a bunch of information that may help with my problem, let me know if you need more!

Stack:
Thread [<1> main] (Suspended (exception RuntimeException))
ActivityThread.performLaunchActivity(ActivityThrea d$ActivityRecord, Intent) line: 2663
ActivityThread.handleLaunchActivity(ActivityThread $ActivityRecord, Intent) line: 2679
ActivityThread.access$2300(ActivityThread, ActivityThread$ActivityRecord, Intent) line: 125
ActivityThread$H.handleMessage(Message) line: 2033
ActivityThread$H(Handler).dispatchMessage(Message) line: 99
Looper.loop() line: 123
ActivityThread.main(String[]) line: 4627
Method.invokeNative(Object, Object[], Class, Class[], Class, int, boolean) line: not available [native method]
Method.invoke(Object, Object...) line: 521
ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run() line: 868
ZygoteInit.main(String[]) line: 626
NativeStart.main(String[]) line: not available [native method]

Is it weird that the first entry is 'ActivityThrea d' with the 'd' cut off? If this is the problem, what went wrong and how do I fix it? The line of code the debug stops on:

public void AddAnimationID(String index, Integer view)
{ animations.put(index, view);
}
'animations' is a Dictionary and is a member of class Alien. I am calling it like:
Alien alien;
alien.AddAnimationID("idle", R.drawable.idle);
I am correct in thinking that R.drawable.idle is an int right? findViewByID takes an int for the argument. Here is the logcat, I tried to pinpoint where in the log it started the application, sorry if its too much.

I am using Eclipse on Windows 7 x64. I have all of the newest updates to the android SDK and I downloaded the android source code and added it to the Eclipse patch because previous posts led me to try that. The code breaks for debug when the first time AddAnimationID is called. Looks like I didn't have enough breakpoints, the culprit is not the AddAnimationID function but actually the SetImageView one. The if statement seems to not work, so I've commented it out for now. I'll post back once I've figured it out. It's probably something silly that works in another language but not Java.

That's array is sorted as attributes are declared in the main Class in sun jdk. Android : App Crashes - Can't Find A Java Method Despite - No Compiler Error

Aug 20, 2010

My Android app runs fine, but: If I insert a call to WebView.setScrollbarFadingEnabled, it crashes saying:

Could not find method android.webkit.WebView.setScrollbarFadingEnabled, referenced from [my class]
VFY: unable to resolve virtual method 289: Landroid/webkit/WebView;.setScrollbarFadingEnabled (Z)V

I am using Android 1.5, not a custom ROM. My app defines minSdkVersion="3" I always clean before compiling.

Is setScrollbarFadingEnabled unavailable in Android 1.5? If so, why don't I receive a compiler error?

Android : Need Information Concerning A Potential Program Development Class

Oct 27, 2010

A local college has decided it wants to start a program in mobile development. They explored Windows 7 mobile and iPhone and it just isn't what they are looking for. Android won the golden ticket, thanks to myself.

They just threw a catch in there for me =). They want me to find the blount of the information!

Would anyone happen to know who I can contact concerning some sort of contract on leasing of development phones for this class? The phones do not necessarily need a service, just a way to test development. The instructors and department leaders have said they would need around 20 devices for a small class. They don't imagine it would be larger than that for a new class.

So can someone point me in the right direction? I know everyone wants to breed more Android developers =P...something to feed our addictions.

Android :: Simple Program - Class Extends Activity At Startup

Oct 1, 2010

I have a simple activity program in android. Basically the class just extends Activity.
But when I start it I get a ClassCastException in the constructor of my class. I don't even have a constructor defined, so it must be in the constructor of the superclass which is Activity. Unfortunately the debugger doesn't give any detailed information on what class it is trying to cast. Here is the stacktrace:

Thread [<1> main] (Suspended (exception RuntimeException))
ActivityThread$PackageInfo.makeApplication(boolean, Instrumentation) line: 649
ActivityThread.handleBindApplication(ActivityThread$AppBindData) line: 4232
ActivityThread.access$3000(ActivityThread, ActivityThread$AppBindData) line: 125
ActivityThread$H.handleMessage(Message) line: 2071
ActivityThread$H(Handler).dispatchMessage(Message) line: 99
Looper.loop() line: 123
ActivityThread.main(String[]) line: 4627
Method.invokeNative(Object, Object[], Class, Class[], Class, int, boolean) line: not available [native method]
Method.invoke(Object, Object...) line: 521
ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run() line: 868
ZygoteInit.main(String[]) line: 626
NativeStart.main(String[]) line: not available [native method]

And when I look into this runtimeexception I get:

detailMessage "Unable to instantiate application com.test.MyApp: java.lang.ClassCastException: com.test.MyApp" (id=830067694464)
The only code is:
package com.test;
import android.app.Activity;
public class MyApp extends Activity {
}
