Android :: Any Way To Call Start Main Activity From Java Program?
Dec 12, 2009I have a normal Java application, normally, we start an Android application from a Main Activity, now I must start it from my application.

I have a normal Java application, normally, we start an Android application from a Main Activity, now I must start it from my application.
I created an application which enables the user to set whether he wants to receive notification while the application runs in background mode. If the notifications are enabled an activity should be started (the dialog should appear on the screen).
I tried to enabled it the following way:
CODE:...........
This is the method from main activity. When onPause() is executed isRunningInBackground is set true.
When I tried to debug it when the main application was running in the background the line
startActivity(intent) had no effect (the activity didn't appear).
Does anyone know how to midify the logic in order to start an activity from the main activity when the main activity is running in the background (after onPause() is called)?
I am trying to start an error-reporting activty if unhandled exception detected. The problem is with exceptions thrown from main thread. Is there any way to start an activity if main thread crashed?

I am new at android development and java programming, but I have decided to program a drinking game app in android. This app basically simulates a deck a cards, a player clicks a button to draw a card then based on the card thats drawn the player plays a drinking game (ie takes 1 drink, takes 2 drinks ect).
I have the main program in one java file, and the code that shuffles the card deck and puts the card sequence in an array in other java file. My problem is that whenever a class from the other java file (classicMode.java) is called from the main program (fubar.java), my android program crashes and gives the error : "The application Drinking Game - FUBAR (process com.games.dg) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again". Code...
I am using the following method in a new application I'm developing. There is a main activity, which instantiates different classes that extends RelativeLayout and I'm using setContentView to switch between the different modules of the application. I wonder if this is a good approach or necessarily I have to use different activities to the several screens the app haves.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI wrote an android app and so far it works perfect except for on one phone. It is the exact phone that I have with 2.2 on both phones and mine works perfect. The other phone is getting force close all the time but only when opening an activity that queries my image DB and tries to show a gallery. Every activity crashes in the same place, the viewimages. At first I thought it was the intent that was doing it but one of the activitys does not have the intent, it opens the images below the gallery. This works on the emulator, on my moto droid and on a few other different droids. Here is the code for the gallery and my bitmap decoder.
The error is below that.

In my very simple app (based on the default Hello World app but with a button added) I try to open one of my phone's (a SE X10 Mini) preinstalled activities, like this:
Intent calendarIntent = new Intent();
calendarIntent.setClassName("com.sonyericsson.calendar","com.sonyericsson.calendar.dayview.DayActivity");
startActivity(calendarIntent);
However, it does not work, I get the following error in the log:
E/AndroidRuntime( 2215): java.lang.SecurityException: Permission Denial: starting Intent { cmp=com.sonyericsson.calendar/.dayview.DayActivity } from ProcessRecord{302cf238 2215:com.klibb.quickappointment/10079} (pid=2215, uid=10079) requires null

Is there anything I can do about this or is this type of code a no-no? When searching the web I see people changing the intent filters in what I assume is their own app, but I obviously cannot change anything in a preinstalled app.

However, I am getting an unexpected result. When I receieve an SMS, the appropriate dialog activity comes up displaying the correct phone number and message, however there is a second activity behind it that is the 'default' activity in my program (it is what opens when i launch my application)
I do not want this second activity to come up. The quick reply activity should come up by itself over top of whatever the user was doing before.

I'm writing an application that starts with a loading activity. In the loading activity the app requests html from web and parses the html, then it sends the parsing result to the main activity. The main activity has several tabs, and contents of these tabs are based on the result of parsing.For example, the result of parsing is a list of strings ["apple", "banana", "orange"], and I need to pass this list to main activity, so that the main activity can create three tabs named after three fruits.I would like to know if there is any way to pass a list of strings among activities, BTW, is it the common way of do this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedNeed an example of how to create/start a new activity from the main activity. I have a button click event on the main layout. Originally I just used setContentView(R.layout.secondactivity); which brings up the layout but I don't think that is correct since the secondactivity class is not instantiated at this point yet. I have looked for such an example and can not find one.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI hav an app that is like a relational database. There is a main app activity that users manage things with. There is also a widget that will display important info and add data to the database. When the widget is clicked, a configure class displays a way for the user to edit data. When the configure activity is done, the widget is updated and instead of going back to the home screen, the apps main activity is started. I can't find where the main activity is being called from. Wouldn't I have to create an intent and start Activity() to get this behavior? When done updating, I want the home screen and not my app.

However, the "problem" I see is main activity's onCreate function is called every time. I think the the main activity should be placed in the activity stack and simply push to front when others exit, therefore only onResume, onStart are called. Is there some flag I need to set or I misunderstand the activity behaviro?
In child activity, besides calling finish() or startActivity for main activity, what is other way to move main activity to front?
