Android :: Inbound / Outbound Calls / Which One Free?
Jan 25, 2010
Just a quick question: I've read confusing information about this on the Internet. I don't know why I can't seem to find a clear answer on this. Maybe it has something to do with Google buying Gizmo5 and now the rules have changed. I think a lot of the articles I read about it now are outdated and aren't correct anymore. In any case, can someone please tell me which type of call, inbound or outbound, is free? When I say free, I mean which one only uses your data plan and doesn't count against your cell minutes.

My first intention is to make a minute counter application. I tried to use a PhoneStateListener but it does not provide enough information to count the time of the outbound calls. The state of the phone does not change when my outbound call is took. Some idea of how to make it ?

I have seen people complaining of the same issue, but I have yet to find a fix. I just flashed Fresh Hero 2.3.3 and every inbound call force closes. I came from a clean root, I flashed the stock RUU and rooted and then flashed Fresh. I have tried all the kernels they say fix this and none do. Any ideas? Or should I give up v2.3.3 and go back to Toast? Don't want to leave Fresh, it's the best ROM I have found yet!

Google Voice runs flawlessly on my Droid. I recently purchased a Droid Eris for my wife, and while Google Voice SMS and inbound calling works fine, outbound calling does not. I notice that Google's "bridging number" used to connect me with the recipient on the Eris is different than the one used by my Droid. When dialing on my Droid, the call is routed through (518) 314-9466, while the problematic Eris is using (609) 987-0466. My wife's GV number is a (908) number which is probably why she is being routed through a (609) bridging number, both being South Jersey Area codes.
Does anyone think this is the problem? If so, is there a way to adjust which bridging number through which outbound calls are connnected. Has anyone else suffered this issue? We are really concerned as Google Voice integration was the primary reason for purchasing this phone. I thought to add that (i) I am using version 0.2.8 in all instances, (ii) the Eris has been updated with the recent OTA update from Verizon (though I didn't have a chance to use Google Voice beforehand to to determine if this is a post-update issue or not) and (iii) I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app from the market multiple times in hopes of rectifying this issue.

Gizmo5/GV/Sipdroid calls were working fine yesterday over both WiFi and 3g but today for some reason whenever I make an outbound call through my N1 it dials but I hear nothing and sipdroid hangs up after 22 seconds. Inbound calls are fine and when I initiate calls to phone #'s through Google Voice on my computer it comes through on my N1 where I can pick up fine and I can hear it. Complete opposite though when making outbound calls - no sound/hangup at 22 seconds.

I've been trying to diagnose a memory leak in an Android application I'm writing. I got a heap dump loaded into Eclipse, but the results I'm seeing are very curious. There are some 20,000 instances of an exception (specifically, LDAPException from the UnboundID LDAP library) in the heap with no inbound references.
That is, they show up at the root of the dominator tree. The OQL SELECT objects e FROM com.unboundid.ldap.sdk.LDAPException e WHERE (inbounds(e).length = 0) returns over 20,000 results, totalling to nearly all of the heap. And yet, the GC runs before the heap dump and I can see that it's running in the console, repeatedly, during the execution of the leaky code. If these instances have no inbound refs, what could be keeping them alive?
I also tried doing a "shortest paths to GC" query. It shows one LDAPConnectionReader row retaining 2 instances, and ~20k LDAPException @ <addr> unknown rows with various hex addresses.
Update: I haven't had time to further diagnose this since posting it, and the bounty I posted is ending before I likely will. I'm awarding it as best I can now, lest the points go to waste. Thanks to everyone who looked into this! I will come back later and update again with the results of further diagnosis, when life is a little less hectic.

I am going to be spending a little time in Canada for work. I know that if I turn my phone on it will connect to the network and start downloading email, texts, etc. Before I leave for canada I want to set up my phone so that when I turn it on up there, it won't try to get my e-mails. I also want to find away to stay in contact with my wife through the wifi. I do have google voice, so is there a way to use that to talk to her? The hotel does have wifi so I need to be able to turn off 1x, 3g, 2g, or whatever the phone uses to connect to the network but leave the wifi on. I would love some suggestions on how to keep in touch with my wife without getting charged for it. When I am in the hotel I will be using skype to talk to her through my laptop, but I wont be in the hotel during the day.

For everyone that just go GV i just found GV Dialer. (in the market)It lets you call from your contact list and then calls through your GV number making the call totally free. If you have your GV number in your free 10 numbers. It shows the person your calling your GV number. And so if you wanted you can free calls in and out.Oh and for the ones that seen the GV Dialer please see my disclaimer.

Looks like the new GV app gives each contact an individual number when calling out. This means that instead of being able to program one outbound number to my Fam and friends list and getting free outbound calls, I am now back to paying for my minutes used on each call, reguardless if it's GV or Standard.

When calling someone else from my Droid 3, their Caller ID only says "Verizon Wireless" and does not list my name. Is there a place in the settings where I can go in and change this? It is a phone used for business only, and I'd like the name of the business to show up on others Caller ID.

I've had a few people receive my texts late, but have always thought the issue was more likely them just not seeing the notifications. But then one took 2 days to arrive on a friend's phone! We're both on Android (I'm on a Nexus 4 running Kit Kat), though I'm on Telus and I believe he's on Wind Mobile. As an FYI, the day of the 2-day-delay I was using Handcent as my SMS app, but in the past I was using the stock SMS app. is the extra delay caused by my SMS app, my OS/phone or my carrier?

I've tried the "Call" option from gmail on my desktop and it works very, very well. The quality is better than Google Voice + Sipgate, and the latency is far less. Has anyone heard if they will be deploying this feature to Android devices?

Not sure if this is technically the "silent bug" but calls do not even show up on the phone, they just appear as "missed call from...." no noise no other notification. I restarted phone but it did it again right away. Phone does show the 50% bug in battery info.

Have the Motorola droid and searched around a bit. I'll come out and admit I'm a cheap skate and trying to save money on VZ nickle and dime approach (especially compared to Sprint).I signed up for the lowest message plan, so looking for any free to send SMS apps that people use. I signed up for the google voice, but haven't been invited. I heard that has a way to send sms free as data.I am aware of the various free sites on the internet via a browser and was wondering if anyone put together an app to use your contact list or be able to make a new one to send free sms (via data, not plan) that works well. Most my friends have unlimited text so it doesn't bother them.I have also read here and there that some of the instant messaging apps might be able to send a text to a phone number? Any luck with this? So far little info on this subject.

Sipdroid and asip really confuse me and dont seem to work (just get red light) apparently i need something like pbxes which confuses me even more. I do have magicjack but i don't have the proxy for it and as of now dont have my actually magicjack with me so i can never really get it.

I just picked up the Motorola Droid, and I'm loving it.I'm trying to find the best free alternative to SMS (because it's ridiculous that after paying $30/mo for 3G access, I have to pay more to move 100-character messages around on the same network...).Ideal would be something like BlackBerry Messenger. So far, I've been using gTalk with my status set to invisible, and that seems to be a pretty good alternative. When I initiate a gTalk conversation with an invisible status, the conversation usually remains short - like an SMS conversation. One downside is that people never initiate conversations on gTalk with me while I'm set to invisible.
