Android :: How To Use Back Button / While Loading A Page?
Apr 7, 2010
I have a link in my application that triggers a webview to open from webview.loadUrl. Sometimes it's takes quite a while to load the page, and in these cases I want to be able to use the built in back button on the phone to cancel the loading and go back to my application. How do I do this? Is there some way I can listen to the back button while loading the URL?

I have a message application so that on view 1 is displayed a list of messages and when you go to view 2 (subactivity) you can send a message. I want the program to work so that when you hit the android back button, you can go back to view 1 and see the list of messages including the new message. Right now only the old data is displayed, and I noticed that displayContent() is not called when going back which I assumed it would. Is there any way to specify that when the back button is hit, to call displayContent() again on the previous activity?

When you're in the browser long pressing on the back button takes you straight to the history page, very useful.

I have the tronsmart CX-919 mini pc running 4.2 and there is an issue with the browser reverting back to the home page or the previous page. When I try to display a webpage on our intranet it reverts back to the homepage or previous page after about 3 hours. I need it to display constantly. I read somewhere that it was a Download Manager issue and disabling it would work but I can't find where to disable it. Also it was stated that Flash was an issue but i tried uninstalling it and it just reinstalled itself and the problem kept occurring. I just want to display a page in a browser and for it to stay on the screen (full screen) until I manually navigate away from it. I plan to leave it on for weeks at a time.

I am quite new to Android yet, and I have an application that has a webview on it. I need to know when the webview finishes loading a page that has a random number of redirects (sometimes to the same page, and the order of the redirects also change), so I can remove the Splash Screen only when there is a fully loaded page. On the webviewclient the onPageStarted and onPageFinished functions are called once per each redirect, as is the onNewPicture (even though the screen is always blank during the redirects). So I can't be sure when it's called the last time (page actually loaded). I also tried using the onLoadResource to count the number of resources loaded (dangerous and unreliable approach, but I am getting desperate here), but this also failed, since after the page is cached, it is called only one or two times. That is one big puzzle I am unable to solve using what I know so far, can anyone please help me?

i'am trying to load an url in background using the default browser. So the user can switch to the browser whenever he finished reading the current activity and the page is already loaded. Is there a way to fire an Intent (Browser) but stay in the original Activity? I'am aware of the FrameLayout approach with setting the visibilty but this is not possible with the default browser.

I would like to a WebView to run some JavaScript before loading the rest of the page. This JavaScript should run in the same context of the page, just as if extra <script> content were added before any other <script> content. This is not possible with add Java script Interface() since I want to set up some instance variables, before the page scripts are run, so that the page scripts can use them.

Has anyone else experienced this issue/problem? When on 4G network, the majority of web pages do not load completely; they stick somewhere between 50-80% loaded and never complete. Stopping and refreshing sometimes gets the page to load, or switching to 3G. This happens regardless of browser (I've used stock, Dolphin, Dolphin HD, and Firefox), and both unrooted and rooted (Myn's 2.2, 2.3). When I've run speed test, I get downloads of 9+ MB/s but it doesn't make a difference if most pages don't load.

This is my first android device and i'm loving it... but one thing that irks me is the use, or lack thereof, of the back button.
As I am navigating menus and options in the Settings, I cannot simply go back one menu using the back key. For example, if I go to Settings->Battery Manager->Battery Profile Options and want to go back to the Settings screen, I cannot.
Pushing the back button does nothing and I can only go back to the Settings menu by going Home, then re-entering.
Another quirk regarding the back button is when reading emails. Using a regular email account such as Hotmail, I cannot simply read an email and go back to the inbox using the button.
It makes navigating the phone very tedious.

I have 3 activities in my app: Activity1 -> Activity2 -> Activity3. Inside Activity3, if the user presses Back, I would like to return to Activity2. In Activity3's onPause event, I added a finish() statement. That's probably not even necessary, but I wanted to make sure this Activity gets cleaned up. This works fine.
However, while in Activity3, if the user presses Home or starts a new app (through notification bar or some other means), I want both Activity3 and Activity2 to finish. If the user returns to this app, he should resume with Activity1.
I have figured out how to do one or the other, but I can't figure out how to handle both cases, if it's even possible. Can I trap the "Back" button in Activity3 and send a message back to Activity2 telling it not to finish()? It seems like the Activities follow the same lifecycle flow (Pause, Stop) regardless of what you do to send them to the background. Just to answer the question of why I want this behavior, imagine that Activity1 is a login screen, Activity2 is a selection screen, and Activity3 is a content screen. If I press Back from the content page, I want to be able to make a new selection. If I exit via any other means (Home, notification bar), I want the user to be "logged out".

I call WebView.clearHistory(), but I am still able to go back after doing so. I want to reuse a WebView, but I don't want the back button to allow the user to go back further than the current "session" of using the WebView. Anybody know what is the best way to handle this? I thought for sure that clearHistory() would do it.

In my android application i have a video list screen,a buffering screen and a videoplayer screen.
As soon as the user clicks an item from videolist screen ,he is navigated to buffering screen and then to videoplayer.
In the buffering screen i am using Async task and doing the loading process in on background process.
Now my issue is like the user if has selested a video then gets navigated to buffering screen. But if the user clicks back when he is in buffering screen then initially he is getting navigated to videolist screen but immediately after that again he is navigated to videoplayer screen.
What i would like to have is either the back button should be made disable in buffering or should prevent the player tostart if back is clicked.

I am new to android development. I wanted to make a button on one of my activities that I can drag to slide my current activity page to the next activity page. The button will be in the center of the screen and I want to be able to press and drag it horizontally to one end of the screen while I am dragging my button I can see my current activity page moving. It is actually like when one slides on the home screen and can control the sliding depending on how far he slides his finger on the screen.

I'm finding that I'm using the back button A LOT whether browsing the web or just navigating the OS. It kind of sucks because the buttons on the droid x are well, really small, and sometimes hard to press because they are so narrow and flimsy feeling. And depending on how you are holding the phone, it could be a good bit of distance for your thumb to travel or I'm finding myself having to reposition the phone in my hands just to reach the back button, which you seem to need very frequently.
Anyone know of any kind of back 'swipe' implementation ? Like some software you can install that makes it if you swipe left to right on maybe the top bar it goes back?

I'm trying to purchase an app, but everytime I enter in my Google Apps premier account info, it just takes me back to the Account Sync page. The app never gets purchased. Is there a way I can fix this issue? I have purchased numerous things using my Google Apps account and all the information is current.
I did a number of searches regarding this issue, but either the question goes unanswered or the response is "just create another Google account to buy the app". I would rather not have to create another account just for this. If anyone knows how to correct this, please let me know.

Instead of trying to grab the notification bar and swiping it down, simply start ABOVE the screen and swipe down. Fast or slow makes no difference.
You can swipe it back up, or simply hit the back button.

Got my EVO yesterday and this is my first post...so it might as well be a really dumb one I deleted that Sprint web links container (the one with CNN, Google, ESPN, etc)...it's the third screen to the right of the home screen...anyway, does anybody know how to get that back. I was trying to clean out the web links in there so I could put my own in, but accidentally dragged that entire container onto the delete spot.
