Android :: How To Disable Mobile Data?
Sep 4, 2010
I just got an EVO and it chews through the battery fairly quick. I downloaded JuiceDefender to manage my mobile data connection. That seems have worked out fairly well. However, the settings are just very restricted (even on the paid versions). As of right now I am trying to develop a much more customizable battery saving application. The main thing I am trying to do first be able to enable/disable the mobile data connection at will. The problem is I can't find any code snippets or articles on how to do this. The only thing I have found is the following. I don't know how accurate this is, but this was all I could piece together browsing developer.android.com.Looking at the phone info when JuiceDefender is running, I found that the GSRP network is getting turned on and off. This leaves me to believe it is possible to do it through code even though every page I find asking about this same issue says it cannot be done. The kicker is they all say to do it like APNDroid. Please someone give me some insight.

I need to find a way to enable / disable mobile data (the thing you can manually enable / disable in Settings->Wireless->Mobile Network (android 2.1)But I can't find any API for that. For WIFI, there's a method setWifiEnabled(boolean) on the class WifiManager. But I can't find anything like that for the data network... no method for this on TelephonyManager or ConnectivityManager.Isn't it possible to programmatically enable / disable mobile data?

I'm trying to limit my mobile data usage with out jumping through hoops.
I'm looking for a widget, that with one click of a button, it can restrict background data, disable auto-sync and enable mobile data, and when pressed again, enable WiFi, disable background restriction and enable auto-sync.
This function, no matter how trivial, would save time and effort.
Is there anything like this out there? Would something like this require root?

Can anyone help explain what this does? I did a small search around the internet, and it came up with just about nothing. My first question is: I turned mobile data off, and yet, during the night, I was charged for data, so something leaked.Personally, I thought if this was because of this particular function. But maybe it was something else. So, I turned it off, but around the forums for other androids people seem to think that syncing doesn't work as well with this disabled.Does anybody know what might have happened? And could this function have been the thing that caused the leak. The leak, was actually for only 50 KB or so, but because I'm on Page Plus, it caused me to go under the required balance to refill of $29.95 and caused my plan to lapse. It's important for me for this not to happen again. Can anyone give any tips?

If "always on mobile data" is disabled, will this have any affect on programs that are set to auto sync with back ground data enabled(Face book, twitter etc)? I'm trying to work it out but lots of people say different things?

What is the difference between these two:Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Enable always-on mobile data
- Description: "Uses more power on some mobile networks"
- Message after disabling: "Attention: Disabling always on mobile data may cause connectivity problems in some applications. Please use the manual refresh feature in applications to update online data" Settings > Accounts & sync > Background data
- Seems to be the same as the 4th toggle in the Power Control widget
- Description: "Applications can sync, send, and receive data at any time"
- Message after disabling: "Attention: Disabling background data extends battery life and lowers data use. Some applications may still use the background data connection.".Disabling either one seems to extend battery life. I haven't figured our yet how they differentially affect push email, etc. Would someone kindly explain to me how these settings are different?

In android 4.0 and above there is the option in the data usage settings, to turn mobile data on and off. What difference does it exactly make? As fas as I tested, I still can take a look at my mobile data usage, even though it is tuned off in the data usage settings.
According to this source of Google
[URL]
turning it off means:
Quote:
If it's off, you won't be able to use mobile data at all and many features of your phone and apps won't work correctly.
what they mean by "...use mobile data at all..." (since I still have 3G) and what features there could be?

so i have an n1 for at&t and i just got the ota update for froyo last night. today i'm trying out the default web browser to see what kinds of flash videos i can see. i already downloaded the flash player from the market. plus i went into the setting for the browser with regards to "about:debug" then changed the UAString to desktop. but for some reason when i go to a website like nbc.com to try and go watch a full episode of the office, it only loads the mobile version of the site. also when i check out the facebook page it always automatically loads the "touch" version of the site. how can i get it to default to the desktop regular full site version? can anyone tell me a way around this or a setting change other than try a different browser?

I'm hopefully getting this phone soon, but I have a quick question before I do. I'd be using the Hero without a data plan for at least the first few months, therefore I was wondering if it is possible to disable all forms of mobile internet. I still want WiFi, but nothing I will be charged for such as GSM/GPRS etc. I'm sure this will be possible but I want to be sure before I buy. And what's battery life like?

Does anyone know how to completely disable the mobile network on the Moment? I need to so I can use it for my Battle.net mobile authenticator while I am using my fiance's new Samsung Reclaim for a month (to get the upgrade price on it) and she has my Hero. Basically, anytime I need data on it, I want to use WiFi but if I leave it on it can and will probably mess up calls on the Hero. My Hero has a nice little check box to disable the mobile network, but the Moment doesn't.

I am looking for an app that automatically switches off the cellular radio when wifi is connected and switches it back on when wifi loses connection. I'm not talking about the APN data connection which already does that, I'm talking about the regular cell phone connection.
According to my lack of results searching through the forums, Market, and Google, such an app does not exist yet. Currently the best app I've found to do anything remotely like this is the Airplane Mode Wi-Fi app, which is a manual switch and a slightly cumbersome one at that, not nearly good enough for how often I go in and out of wifi.
The reason I ask for this is because I use Google Voice with SIP and a prepaid plan. I want to use SIP as much as possible to save my prepaid minutes for when I really need them. When wifi and cell are both connected with Sipdroid running and I receive a call, they both ring at the same time. To be sure I don't accidentally use prepaid, I usually reject the call and call back over SIP, which is slightly annoying for both me and the caller.

Is there a way for end users to disable 2G data services (e.g. make the phone just a phone)?Or disable the GSM function as well (say, for a device used on a hiking trip as a GPS tracker, where there is no coverage)?
Is there enough control in the SDK to pursue writing an app with a control screen like: [x] Enable Voice (GSM) Enable 2G Data / Enable 3G Data (uses more battery than 2G) [ ] Enable Data When Roaming (may result in extra charges) [x] Enable WiFi [x] Enable WiFi even if device is sleeping [x] Enable Bluetooth [x] Enable GPS [ ] Airplane mode (disable all radios)

I want, and I have for a while been willing to, disable and enable DATA (2g, 3g, whatever) with a long press of the search button. And I mean only long-pressing it, NOT opening an app with it and disable it from the app (doesn't make any sense, otherwise one would press the HOME button and disable it from a widget there).

I have a Motorola Milestone running Android 2.1.Is there a widget which turns "background data" ("Settings -> account & sync -> background data") on/off? I know there are several widgets which turn auto sync on off (e.g. the power control widget) and disable data connections altogether (apndroid, quick settings, etc), but that's not what I need. I searched the market, google and this forum but couldn't find anything. The only workaround I found was to create a shortcut to "account & sync" using "any cut". Not a widget, but close enough. Is there a widget, or a better way to do this?

The service providers in my country are charging for the MBs I downloaded in my GPRS/EDGE connection. So, whenever I want to disable the GPRS, I just change my default APN to something wrong and then correct it when I want to enable it again. I couldn't find another way to enable/disable. I think,Android team assumed that only 3G users with a good data plan only would use this phone. Anyway, I just want to develop an application which can do that automatically for me. However; I couldn't find how to change the APN settings in the docs. but I couldn't find how to use it. Could you please help me? Any alternative ways and/or suggestions are welcome.

I want to develop an application that disable the Background Data (new feature in Android 1.5) and Auto Sync and then enable GPRS/EDGE connection and vice versa.
I figured out how to enable/disable GPRS/EDGE by changing the APN settings. (weird solution. However; Android developers couldn't think a user may want to disable GPRS/EDGE) But, I couldn't find a way to enable/disable Auto Sync and Background data.
I investigated the Android code and as I understood, the Sync operation is an intend. So, I wanted to reach with putExtra to the intend and trigger the enabling/disabling. But; I couldn't find the correct keyword.

I run into rather strange problem. My phone, china Android 2.3.4, is working quite weel instead of this:
If I use WIFI, then turn it off and try to use mobile data connection, it is not possible.
Icon showing that mobile connection should be active is on, but no data comming through.
I tried switchiing to airplane mode, changing access point names and so on, but nothing worked. Only solution was to restart the phone, after that all works normally - until connecting to wifi.
After rooting my phone I tried to figure out more with Teminal emulator. It seems that after releasing wifi connection and turning interface down, mobile interface comes up with same IP as before - it should ask network for new one. But, more important, route table is empty (or containing one entery and no default gateway at all) I tried bringing mobile interface up and down several times, tried forcing it to use dhcp (timeout), without success.
Is there a way to "reset" whole networking system from shell? Something like partial restart, which would be probably quicker than full restart.

Would it be possible for me to build an application that enables people to encrypt call coming to me with my public key and then for me to decrypt the call data at my end using my own private key. This way I basically have a more secure communication channel which I am assuming because RSA is hard to crack would be difficult to monitor.I am asking this question from a research point of view and have absolutely not considered the factor as to how computationally feasible would such an application be. I would just like to know if there is a way for me to intercept my outgoing data using any built functions.
