Basically what I am trying to accomplish is I want a canvas I can pass bitmaps to, to be displayed on the screen with the rest of my view objects (buttons, textviews, etc).

I have read the Android UI trick 2 on Android developers, which tells people how to include a layout in another layout file multiple times, and give these included layouts different id. However, the sample here is overwriting the layout id, not the id of the views IN this layout. For example, if the workspace_screen.xml looks like this: And I include it three times in another layout file. Do I end up with three TextViews with id firstText, and another three with secondText? Isn't there an id collision? And how do I find the secondText TextView in the third included layout with findViewById? What should I input in the findViewById method?

I've tried both. My most complex applications using one activity per screen. However, now that I'm successfully written an app with just one activity and handling the back button myself, I don't see any compelling reason to use multiple activities. The one activity application is much simpler and more straightforward.
What advantages of multiple activities am I missing?

I've more than one Handlers in an Activity. I create all the handlers in the onCreate() of the main activity. My understanding is the handleMessage() method of each handler will never be called at the same time because all messages are put in the same queue (the Activity thread MessageQueue). I am implementing a music player application in Android. My play list selection screen is implemented as a tab selector widget which contains a ListActivity inside each of the tabs: Artist, Albums, Songs.
I want to update the ListView in each of the ListActivity when I delete an item from any of the lists.
i.e. When I long press an item in the Artists list a context menu is drawn with "Delete Artist"
And it should delete all the songs from this artist in the Songs ListView, delete all the albums by this artist in the Albums ListView, and finally delete the entry for the artist in the Artist ListView.
Each of the ListActivity has its own fillData() method, which updates the ListView when the button in the context menu is pressed.
How can I call the fillData() method of the Albums ListActivity after I update the ListView inside of the Artists ListActivity?
I want to load e.g. LinearLayout with some Buttons from XML and draw it on Canvas in a way that the Views behave normally (I can set onClick actions for the Buttons and when I press a Button, it changes it's background drawable). Can I do this?

Ive been modeling my test application, a game, after the example apps lunarlander and jetboy. They contain a lot of reusable code, but they manually update the drawable objects in real time. It seems like using the android animation built ins would be so much easier since they provide the type of animation I need¦a simple linear movement.
Is there a way to do this, or am I better off updating my canvas in real time much like the example apps.
If there is a way, could anyone get me started with some sample code? I am currently inheriting SurfaceView in my class.

All i see is 2 process, where i was hoping to see an instance of TargetSL, for each launch that was invoked by the singleLauncher!
When I create an 'Android Library Project' is it OK to put a whole lot of different libraries in there and create a number of different packages?
If I use just one or two components from the library, will it import all the resources and packages or is it smart enough to only import the referenced resources and packages that are needed?
The alternative is to create a single 'Android Library Project' for each component which I don't want to do if I can help it.
Is there any way to query a root view of an activity for all of its child views even before the root view or its children have been inflated? I guess what I'm looking for is whether a view knows ahead of time what children it will have before it gets inflated, and can I get that list in some way. Bizarre I realize, but I think it will help me with some unconventional automation testing I'm working on. I haven't found anything in the API like this.

Im using ListView to to show some custom data, once data is updated in the adapter i call notifyDatasetChanged(), so the view will get updated, all of this works well, my issue though is i would like to run an animation once only on items that got changed when the adapter was updated. currently i keep a copy of all the changed objects and i tried to animate the correct items through the getView() call.
However if i do it only once for every getView call then i see no animation most of the time on items that changed. if i continue to do so in successive getView calls i see animation on items that don not change as well and also the ones that changed get animated again and again.
Im guessing sometimes android calls the getView() for other reasons than showing the generated view immediately, and thats the reason it doesnt work if i do it once.
I have a HorizontalScrollView that has lots of views and images inside it.
The issue is that if I have lots of stuff inside it I will get a 'java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: bitmap size exceeds VM budget'
is there any way to use some kind of cache, or add/remove stuff as I move left/right so its not on memory all the time?

its restarting the activity after the item have been deleted, but how can i only show the tab whose view was in focus when it restarts and i don't want fillData() method to be shown as it does not have to do with the tabs. i hope i made myself clear enough
I am very new to android development and have been trying to draw a square comprised of multiple smaller rectangles of different colours... Like a Mosaic essentially. Basically at the moment I am reading values from a file which assigns the colour to the smaller Rects. I am using a pair of nested for loops to try to draw the small Rects sequentially, line by line. However when the program finishes there is only one small Rect drawn which is the last one to be drawn and its colour corresponds to the first value read from the file. One aspect of this is to display any "STATUS" activities in a side view on the screen. It looks like I can use PackageManager queryIntentActivities() to find the activities that show status information. But, can I display these in a single view all at the same time (via a linear layout)? The activities would be installed in separate apk's (features). Can this be accomplished using ActivityGroup? Is this even allowed in Android? Everything I've read implies that Activities take the whole screen or float on top. This implies only one activity can be active at a time where as the design I'm thinking of uses the activities more like widgets.

The intent starts the same activity for all the buttons but will contain different String variables depending on the selection. I am currently using a switch, case methodology for my click listener but keep running into 'duplicate local variable' problems as I try to eliminate code repetition! If anyone could provide a-bit of pseudo-code that would be even better.
