Android :: How Does TD Work As Far "homescreen" Is Concerned?
Feb 25, 2010
10 yr + Blackberry user here. Waiting for NexusOne or Incredible to hit VZW. I am looking to move 5 BB users to Android. I am going to "test" out either phone to make sure the users will be satisfied prior to pulling the trigger and I have a few questions. f you have Exchange and use touchdown could you answer a few questions? How does TD work as far a your "homescreen" is concerned? What about if you have that PLUS a gmail account (or 2) work on homescreen? In a more detailed way, I am used to having a all my email come into one account on my BB and I know from reading various posts here this is not the case with Android. I am curios to know how an exchange account and gmail account play out on the phone's home screen. Can you have icons that show each account with notifications? I am confused at looking a touchdown screen shots and it looks like your exchange account consumes the entire homescreen. It's odd I know BB so well and feel like the new kid in school and it bothers me that my knowledge is not up to par yet. Although not having a Android phone yet, I am anxious to find some things out prior since obviously VZW is not fast enough.

Lately I've been downloading a lot of apps and trying them out, only to find out 8/10 times i don't want them anymore. I've noticed a few leave behind folders on my SDcard that I had to delete. Just wondering if that's all they left or maybe something left in the system too.

"You can tell that the processor is fast, but the UI still has a jerky quality to it - it's not totally fluid. We'd say that's more of an Android thing, though."Quoted directly from engadet's preview."Dont get me wrong: the Droid X is a delight to use. But at times, the hypothetical finish feels a little rougher than it should, and its lacking a certain refinement in how it switches between screens, in how it responds to the touch that one sees in an iPhone or even iPod."Quoted from Zdnet.com's preview.I have hopes that the phone is nice and fluid. I remember the droid when it first came out was lagy, especially on the home screens. Lets hope the X is not.

Don't get me wrong, I think its great what they are doing by integrating search with all the "smartphone features", along with trying to bust up the Mirosoft entrenchment, but it seems like they can potentially have access to too much personal info. I know much, if not all of Google access can be turned off, but if you want to use the phone to its fullest, everything you do can be stored/monitored on a Google server.
- If you want to transfer contacts from a non Android phone, list has to go to Google for conversion (Exchange excluded).they know who you associate with.
- Turn on GPS, use for application and search assistance.they know where you are.
- Create custom maps and use Nav they know your habits and where you're going.
- Calendar they know when you're going to go.
- Use search/browse history to aid Google in helping you find what you're looking for they know what you like.
- GDocs, stored online they know what you're working on.
- "Backup my settings".they know how you use your phone, and copies of personal files store on the phone (full flash of phone and SD card, still got wallpaper back then some?).
- You want a decent POP3 mail app, "have" to use Gmail they have all your personal email.
I understand that being able to get free "stuff", there has to be some sort of give/take, but working in IT and being the cynic that I am, I can't help but think that this phone was rolled out more for Google's benefit than ours (read, Data Mining). But I'm more concerned about a security breach given that so much personal info is stored in one spot.

I've asked "how to detect home screen" before. I'm still searching. I noticed when I press "home" button on Android emulator, I got this statement in catalog so I went to ActivityManager to see if I can find a clue there. Here is my findings: 1. I can not instantiate ActivityManager because it's constructor is not public, and it's not a singleton 2. it has a function called: getRunningAppProcesses sounds promising -- would it give me all the running processes? 3. since I can not instantiate ActivityManager I tried to use one of the derived class: RunningAppProcesseInfo to see if I can use it's parent methods: getRunningAppProcesses. Nope.

I am working on an app that has a homescreen. This homescreen should behave like the android homescreen where you can switch between several views by flinging your finger over the touch screen.
The solution is easy. I have 3 view instances, right, left and current view. I get this instances from the viewflipper that I initialized earlier. Since I have a HTC G1 my sreen is 320 px in width and 480 px in height.
Imagine you capture the down value of a action down motion event when you touch the screen. Then you move your finger and the screen should move in exactly the same way so you have to recalculate the view's position. It works for me so far but I am facing a strange problem. When you touch the right view without moving you finger but keeping it on the screen for less then a second the view disappears and shows the left view.
Here is my code:..........................
I think such a Homescreen for your own app could be a interestion UI element.

homescreen 3D - Android program launcher on Vimeo. with a few more updates, this could be awesome. it removes the ability to use widgets and stuff, but it's very smooth scrolling and on my vibrant it looks so cool. i'm not the dev or the maker of the video. just someone wanting to mention this cool app.

So I have App Monster, which is GREAT to redownload all apps after a hard reset or device switch, but setting up all my icons and widgets etc. on the various homescreen is a tedious task.
Any homescreen savers out there? I'm imaging a scenario where I could manually redownload the apps (using App Monster this is a piece of cake), and then activate the homescreen saver app to instantly populate my homescreens just as they were prior to a hard reset.

I'm looking for the best widgets for your homescreen. I'm currently using:
Twidgit Lite
Calwidget
Weather Widget
Tunewiki
Can't get Facebook Pro to work though - shame as it looked like a nice little compact app. Can anyone recommended any others?

I am sick of dealing with only 3 panels on my DROID! I have searched around the internet and have found no results. I was told to use a home screen replacement, which I tried, and that did not work. Does anyone know of a simple app that has JUST the functionality to add more home screen panels to stock Android (2.0), and if not is there a developer out there that could make this?

Is there a way to know if there is an instance of your widget currently on the homescreen? I always end up using variables that change state with onUpdate() and onDeleted() calls, but that obviously that isn't effective in every scenario.

I was wondering if it's possible to get the icon (shortcut) of your app on the home screen during installation instead of inside the standard apps folder? And I did find out that Android has AppWidgets but I was wondering if it supports "standard" widgets as well (javascript/html/css) ?

I'm coming from Windows Mobile (Touch Pro2) and I'm going to miss having my upcoming appointments on the home screen. Is it possible to have this set up? I'm only seeing icons/widgets in all the reviews. The phone I'll be getting will be the EVO 4G. Also, how well does Google Voice implement into Android, is it possible to have an option to either call from my regular cell number or from google voice without going through an app or the website?

I am trying to use a ViewFlipper and make it act like the home screen(The layout will move with your finger). Check out this for an example. I want to do this with a ViewFlipper that only contains two children so the opposite view should be shown on either side of the current view depending on which way the user moves their finger. This code works but only for 1 direction at a time. This is in onTouchEvent.
CODE:............................
Which ever of the bottom two lines I put last that direction will work correctly but the other will not.
Here is how I set the leftView and rightView:
CODE:............................
Is it going to be possible to set it up so that the same view is shown on both sides of the current view?

Sorry if this has been answered before but I couldn't see it anywhere.
I know a lot of websites now use an "apple-touch-icon" file to allow iPhone users to put a logo'd bookmark onto their homescreen. Is there a way to do similar on Android (specifically HTC Sense).
Whenever I try I just get the Sense bookmark icon, with a tiny favicon image in the bottom corner of it.

I've searched for quite some time over this forum and also using Google, so I hope I'm not duplicating a thread.
Does anyone know if there is any way of returning to the homescreen after sending an SMS? I have a Desire Z and whilst it's only a case of pressing the home key, it's a small gripe as I have to flip the keyboard back in and press home.
I'm using the default SMS application and I'm not too fussed on external SMS apps as I don't like the graphics (I've tried Handcent and the default Android skin still isn't quite the same), plus the only real reason I wanted them was to change the LED colour, but that doesn't work either. Anyways, if anyone has some ideas please feel free to let me know.

Hi everyone, so I installed the ADW.launcher homescreen replacement app and love it. The only problem is that I have to force quit my default homescreen (in this case it's called "LG Homescreen")--task-killers won't work and I have to go into the application settings to force it. Fine. But every time I reboot my phone it runs along side of adw and I want only adw when the phone boots. I already set adw as my default homscreen, no change.
