Android :: Hebrew Fonts On Android 2.1
May 10, 2010
I love my new HTC Incredible, but it is frustrating to not be able to read and respond to emails and Facebook content on a daily basis. It was easy to add Hebrew support on my previous phones (Palm Treo and Blackberry). How difficult is it for Google to provide the hooks to support fonts for one additional language? They will satisfy the needs of most customers who use other languages.

There is an open issue with about 100 people watching it and 80 comments on it which nobody seems to care about it is http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1580 and it talks about Hebrew support for android phones. The current situation is that people need to root their phones to get it which is simply a ridiculous situation. This issues has been left unattended for a very long time and all that's really needed is to replace the system fonts with fonts that support hebrew. This has been done by Samsung on the Samsung Galaxy and has been proven as working and did not change the font of the system when viewing English. My question is, why is it that Google can't take the time to integrate a change that already exists in a branch of the OS into the trunk and thereby allowing many other people to enjoy the OS? This affects not only Hebrew, but Arabic and many other languages, what's the point of an open source OS if the project progresses so slowly?

I am trying to run flash website with my Android device(Galaxy S3 Jelly Bean 4.3). The website built for Internet Explorer only , but i succeed runming it on my FireFox browser on my PC. When i am trying to run this website on my phone , it run properly except of one thing : the Hebrew shows Gibberish.
I tried to put an image but i couldn't! I know that Adobe stop publishing Android flash player, but it still can be download from Adobe's website.
I search on the Internet and tried a lot of things: Flash Player isn't influenced of the browser encoding. I tried to replace a lot of browsers of android, no one solve the problem. After understanding the locale can be the problem i decided to make my IE on my PC show the same Gibresih. I change the religion on my windows 7 control panel and my IE showed the same problem. My device is English but i use application like customlocale2 ( I tried alot of those application). i tried to run the website on my friend galaxy s3 (genuine Hebrew) and the same thing happend. After searching on the internet i found this [link][2] which show how to change Firefox config on android device. I saw that the locate isn't for Hebrew. I tried to change all the configs that look like related to locale from my PC FireFox(couldn't find how to import config to Firefox android) but the same thing happended. (Maybe i miss some configs). Firefox doesn't have Hebrew edition to android device yet. When i tried it on My Google Chorme on my PC , the same thing happend. when i change the language of Google Chrome (including UI) and tried it works! I tried to enter to other Flash site i know and the Hebrew was upside-down.

My application displays Hebrew text which comes from a Web Service. When a sentence contains digits (in the middle of it), the digits appear in a mirror view: 29 appears as 92, 21:45 appears as 54:12 and 2,000 appears as 000,2.
Also, when a sentence starts with digits or English characters, they get thrown to the end of the sentence messing it all up... Is RTL support in Android still immature?

I am interested in displaying web pages with more than the 3 installed fonts. I tried the demo of installing fonts as assets and changing the typeface, but I am not sure if it applies to a Webview. I was able to modify the sdk and install more fonts in frameworks/base/ data/fonts. I can see those additional files when using the shell in / system/fonts. However, the fonts were not used in the internal web browser.

How to change the fonts on your rooted Droid Eris. I'm not sure if this works for all Android phones, so backup your phone before proceeding. This DOES change key Android files, so be careful. If you brick your phone, it's not my fault.
First of all, go to this website and find a font you like:
1001 Free Fonts - Download Free Fonts for Windows and Macintosh
The file you download should be a .zip, and when unzipped be in the format .TTF. Copy the .TTF file to your SD card. I suggest SDCard/Fonts/. After finding a nice font, download Type Fresh from the Market (free). Also, pick up AndExplorer (free) while you're there. Type Fresh will allow you to change your fonts, and Andexplorer is used as a handy file explorer.
Run Type Fresh, and it will display all the system fonts that Android uses. Touch DroidSans, and it will display a window using AndExplorer. At this point it should request superuser permissions; allow it. Find the folder with your fonts, select a font, and press okay. Press menu and select apply fonts. Allow it to reboot your phone when it asks, and afterwards you should have a nice new font to make your Eris even sexier.

I have a web page that uses a custom font, using this CSS piece of code: If I load the page in the browser in Android 1.1, 1.5 or 1.6, this technique works fine, the font is downloaded and used. But these were the good times. Now this is all gone. With 2.0 my declaration is ignored, the default font is used, and I'm sad! This is in the Browser app, and in my app that uses a WebView.
