I'm able to get a list of installed packages using the package manager, but this includes various system packages . Are there any filters i can apply on this list to only show the apps that would show up when bringing up the application list from the home screen?

OK maybe I'm being paranoid and behind the rest of the world who has already done this: I'm afraid of adding my credit card to my Google Checkout account! My main concern being a super intelligent user of my Android phone who will buy a million apps (potentially!) - my 5 year old son
I used to have a credit card on my account - but that's expired
Knowing that the card had expired, I thought I would test out the buying of an app
I was surprised that it only took a few pages of my clicking yes to buy the app
(The purchase didn't go through - I got an email saying this because my credit card couldn't be charged)
Question: is there a secure pass code system to buy applications?
Like needing to input a code at the last step of buying
(I think this is how iPhone works - I say this not having owned one)
I don't think there is a secure pass system - I've played around with my phone loads and have never come across anything. BUT, EVEN if there was such a pass system: there's still something wrong!
I've bought my phone. Not made any changes. Just started using. I would imagine that's what everyone does - as opposed to buying and then customising and making secure (and maybe optimizing the use of energy so that it doesn't die within a few hours of use)
Buying an application: you can cancel within 24 hours (I think that's the time limit) Over the weekend, I let go of business life and only pick up on Monday - so if my son purchased and installed an application on Friday evening, I wouldn't find out until some time later - because I don't look at my phone OR my emails over the weekend! (+ Say if an application was purchased that I then managed to cancel - I then lose the right to buy again and trial with the right to cancel - a small point, but valid regardless I think)
Would be interested to hear what others say - maybe I'm missing something and maybe I'm using incorrectly.
Is it possible to get list of all process which are running in the Android system, and kill some of them? I know that there are some applications (task managers), but I would like to write my own, simple application.
I would like to write simple task manager, just list of all process and button which will kill some of them.
Could you just write some Java methods which I can call in order to get list of process, and method for killing them. Or just give me some advices.

Now, I need to perform a factory data reset just to remove the Google account associated with it. Is it safe to do so or will I lose any further system apps or worse, brick my phone? I have the apk's of the system apps that I removed, but for some reason I am not able to restore/install all of them. I used ES File Explorer back then to remove those apps. [My phone is Samsung GT-I5801 running Android 2.2]

I would like to move a few apps (such as Terminal Emulator and OSMonitor) to the /system/app folder. I'm able to get them moved, then chmod them to 644, but upon trying to launch them, they force close. Am I missing something?
View 19 Replies View RelatedI am searching an application that allows me to backup the .apk files of both user and system applications like AppWererabbit (http:url...). The problem is that i need this app to be compatible with android versions below 4.0, i.e. android 2.3.X.
I have already installed titanium backup on my phone, but i miss the ability to set an automatic .apk backup when each system/user app is updated. I think that to keep .apk files of older versions of the same app could be usefull.
Is there any way to stop some applications from starting on system startup? I means not killing them. just don't let them to start.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen installing applications from android market some permissions are not listed to the user, but are granted to the application upon installation, including the notorious "Phone calls" permission. When installing locally through "Package installer" the full set of permissions is listed. That behavior may be observed with many applications one of which is 'net.jimblackler.newswidget' (no offense Jim - I hope it's true there's no bad publicity).
This bug was reported as issue #9365 [0] back in Jun 27, 2010 but has gone so far unnoticed, perhaps because android market is not part of AOSP, which is why I post here. I consider this a serious problem as it is misleading for users and reflects badly on application developers and the whole android echo system. Hopefully this will get the needed attention and treatment, especially after all the recent noise around applications security and privacy breaches.

Is it possible to show a list of applications (with intent.createChooser) that only show me my twitter apps on my phone (so htc peep (htc hero) or twitdroid). I have tried it with intent.settype("application/twitter") but it doesnt find any apps for twitter and only shows my mail apps.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI deleted a few system apps (all the social stuff, corp directory, email, etc). In a thread on DroidXForums (this one on the unrooting procedure) someone mentioned that they could not get the .604 update without some of the bloatware. Of course, this freaked me out a bit as I would certainly like to get Froyo when it comes out. So, I went about trying to reinstall the stuff I'd uninstalled. The system dump with all the default apps is here, and below is the procedure to get what you're missing reinstalled and visible as system apps. I used Root Manager but the same procedure should work for Root Explorer. If you prefer ADB I'm sure one of the more competent terminalists here.
-Place the apk(s) of the apps on your sdcard.
-Use your chosen means to copy the apk(s) to /system/app (this will require making /system/app writable. In Root Manager just press the R/W key when you're exploring /system/app).
-You now need to change the app's permissions. In Root Manager, long press on the app (in /system/app) and click on "permissions". Then make sure that only the following boxes are clicked: User Read, User Write, Group Read, Others Read.
-Make sure you make /system/app read only again by clicking that box in the top right while you're exploring the folder.
-Reboot phone.
Now the apps should be loaded and the system should recognize them as system apps (you can verify by opening Titanium and noticing they're in red). This should make you good to go for whatever OTA comes. If you're unsure which apks in the system dump correspond to the apps you've deleted, just explore your /system/app and compare it to the system dump app list. Any apks in the dump but not in yours are what you're looking for.
When i press the button to get up all the applications in a tile veiw is there anyway i can remove certain things from here without deleting them, or atleast put them in a folder?

I have been through many roms, and i always wipe/data, etc. I also always backup all apps/ data/ system through titanium. I read something a while back in a post which i cannot find about not selecting the red colored items or maybe the green items?I think it may be the red because those are all system apps which will come in the new rom i am flashing. I noticed i had 2 copies of system apps like car home 2.2 and so on, i just wanna be sure before i flash a new rom again.

I have to go back, back twice then re-enter the list. Has anyone heard of this or anyone know how i can somehow reset this ? I know i can use an uninstaller but i want to be able to move to sd etc etc without headache..

View 5 Replies View RelatedJust got a Droid 2 and I'm tinkering around. I saw the "Running Apps" list and its pretty useful if I say so myself. However is it necessary to go in there and stop apps that I'm not using all the time to save battery life? Do apps still run after their closed, because Facebook was running after use. And when stopping apps my phone tells me that "this can have undesired consequences on the app" which scared me a bit. I haven't even done my first charge yet, but my battery went down about 40% in about 2 and a half hours.
