Android :: Condition Variable Usage
Apr 21, 2009I'm trying to use a Condition Variable to control the execution sequence of two threads. I can create a Condition Variable in one thread and block on it. But I would like to be able to access it from another Thread and unblock it from that thread.. ? Blocked Thread i am planning to keep as GUI thread and it should update the messages which are sent by b/g thread on the screen during its block state and will be unblocked by b/g thread in the end by calling open(); method.

Mar 12, 2010I am a novice in android programming and wanted to work on the GPS related apps. I tried using DDMS in eclipse but it doesn't send the co- ordinates (or my app doesn't pick it up). I tried typing 'geo' with the co-ordinates but it gives a message as permission denied. Could some one please tell me how do I go about sending GPS co-ordinates and also use the emulator.

Aug 9, 2010I'm just starting with android development and have written an application to show details about the battery status.
Now I wanted to put the whole thing into an widget - and here's the question:
Do I really need a update service in the background to listen for ACTION_BATTERY_CHANGED intents? My first thought was to put just a <action android:name="android.intent.action.ACTION_BATTERY_CHANGED" /> line into the <intet-filter> tag of the widget in the AndroidManifest.xml - but obviously it's not that simple.
If the UpdateService is the right way I'll do so - but I just wanted to make sure what the proper solution is.

May 30, 2010I'm new to Android, I've followed the hello world tutorial through and have a basic idea of what's going on. I'm particularly interested in the touch screen of my T-Mobile Pulse so just to get me started I want to be able to write the co-ordinates of a tocuh event on the screen, so say the user touched the co-ordinate 5,2 - a textview on the screen would display that.
At present I have a simple program that just loads an xml file which contains the textview I intend to write the co-ordinates in.
Thank you in advance, I did Google for help and searched stackoverflow but everything I found either went way over my head or wasn't suitable for this.

Motorola Droid :: How To Keep Phone In Pristine Condition
Oct 30, 2009I am very interested in finding out how is the finish on the phone. Does it look like a screen protector will be necessary? Will the sides or back scratch easily? (For example I hate how the chrome bezel on the iPhone scratches no matter what you do to protect it.) Does it appear that the car dock or multimedia dock will eventually scratch or cause some wear on the phone's finish? (So many times accessories and even cases made by the phone manufacturer actually causes damage to the phone's finish after repeated use.) I admit I am anal and always try to keep my phone in pristine condition. Once it has a blemish or a scratch, I seem to constantly dwell on that and it distracts from my enjoyment of the device. I probably need a shrink instead of a new phone.

I've installed Froyo on a T-Mobile branded Desire. After the update, turning on USB tethering leads to immediate loss of mobile network - it just turns itself off. Same goes for the mobile Wifi hotspot: turn on -> for 2 seconds, it's working -> mobile network drops off. Moving into airplane mode and back brings back the network, but tethering is a goner. With 2.1, USB tethering had worked. I'm on Base, a brand of e-plus. I've talked to their customer services, they say Base absolutely supports tethering.
Android :: Mobile Apps Vs Mobile Web
Jun 18, 2010Recently I logged into GMail with my browser instead of the GMail app, and discovered what I've read before elsewhere... that the GMail mobile web page seems cooler and better, than the app.
So, I've been thinking... which is better? Is either better? Can they both be equally good?
Either way, it occurred to me, it's interesting that all the Android blogs fall all over themselves almost weekly to come out with various "Best X Android Apps" articles, but I don't think I've seen any articles about the best mobile web pages for Android (or any smart phone for that matter).
I understand the money is to be made in apps, and that not much can (yet) be done with the web that you can do with an app (until we have workable Flash?) but surely there must be some great mobile sites out there that are better than, or equal to, apps?
I'm appealing to all of you then to make your suggestions for Best or at least good mobile web pages to use on our Android phones. I'll be looking around myself, and will possibly turn the results into a blog post of my own.
Here are a couple of starters that seem to be better than the app versions:
- Gmail: nicer interface, quick access to GTalk and Buzz as well as Calender, etc.
- Evernote: www.evernote.com/m Evernote has a really good mobile web site in case you don't want to download the app.

Oct 29, 2010I have been trying to find a way of quickly switching off/on the Mobile Network setting from the home screen. When searching Google there's loads of pages stating that it is an HTC Widget that can be added. I have checked all the widgets on the Desire HD and cannot seem to find it anywhere. I am using an unbranded handset.
The Desire HD manual even states "You can also add widgets that allow you to quickly switch on or off certain settings of your phone, such as Wi-Fi, Mobile Network...".
Does anyone else with an HD handset have this widget ?

Apr 9, 2010Has anyone else tried this? Thought I'd add sky sports bundle. First try just said payment pending. Phoned T-Mobile, woman asked technical and came back to say it wasn't supported anymore and I couldn't get it. However, just tried now and its working but only on 3g and not WiFi.Thinking it's because my broadband WiFi is blocking access as it is o2.

Nov 21, 2010I had an idea for an app but I don't know if it's in the market yet or not so I'm posting this here. My idea is, as far as I can tell from searching, every NFL team has its own radio network. For example the Pittsburgh Steelers have WDVE 102.5 in Pittsburgh and the Ravens have Easy 97.7. These stations are each available online. You may see what I'm thinking.
An app that puts all the NFL teams' radio networks into one place. Kind of like iHeartRadio but you wouldn't have to search for the station, each team would have their radio station in the list on this app and you would just have to tap/select the one you want to listen to and you're listening to that team's radio station and hearing about the game.
I know there are apps out there nowadays so you can get updates and some cable providers give you access to all the games, but this would be free because the stations are free online. So if you're curious about that game on the other side of the country and you don't get the channel and are not near a computer you can just open up this app (I haven't named it yet) and listen to the radio broadcast of that game.

Dec 9, 2009I have an itouch with AP mobil on it and it has a cool set where it lets you go online and update AP mobile with news etc. and lets you read all the stuff without a internet connection, so I can read it on the plane, is there a setting on the version for the Eris to do this? I couldn't find it. If not is there a way to request this to the people that made the app?

Basically a customisable form-based data collection app which can be sync'ed with a desktop database. Does anyone know of such an app?PS one of the shortfalls of Android from a marketing perspective is that there is no definitive way to view all available applications - Android Market is limited when accessed via the web.

Dec 24, 2009I have tried to debug in my device (HTC Hero) that has android 1.5 (I think, and even I don't know how to update) and well.I have right checked the debugging option on the mobile adjustments of apps. So when I click on run, it goes fine but when I click on debug (all of this in eclipse) it does the same actions that it does in the run option. So I cant see it step by step.
