How does Android handle scaling of a video being played within a VideoView?
So for example if I have a video that is say 480 X 270 (width and height), aspect ratio 16:9. And, say the VideoView is added to a LinearLayout with LayoutParams of (480, 270). What will be width and height of the rendered video in portrait orientation in a device that is 320 X 480? In landscape? In another device that is 320 X 550?

I am using Videoview to playback mp4 file from local machine using android emulator. I hear the audio, but the screen is blank and no video is seen. Android SDK 2.0.1

Using a VideoView is it possible to set a scale factor for Android? By Default the video view resizes itself to fit the encoded resolution of the Video. Can I force Android to render a video into a smaller or larger rect?

Seems simple, but even with video files that I've seen work in other video players on the phone, I keep getting the "Sorry, this video cannot be played" message. And this associated debug info: INFO/MediaPlayer-JNI(234): prepareAsync: surface=0x1a3ff0 (id=1) ERROR/MediaPlayer(234): Error (-4,0) DEBUG/VideoView(234): Error: -4,0
what those errors mean or how I can fix this? If this is not how I should be using VideoView please let me know. I'd appreciate being sent in the right direction for how to get a local video file playing within a view.

I can't figure out why am i not able to play the video in my VideoView. All i'm getting a message is Cannot Play Video : Sorry, this video cannot be played. I created an SD card for my emulator as well. Do i need to place me SD card in a particular folder in my SDK?

VideoView cannot play long path video issue: Bug#8699
enviroment: Platform 2.0 simulator and G2 H/W.
If setVideoPath("/data/data/com.abc.android.abcd/Transformers.mp4");
It can play well.
While, If setVideoPath("/data/data/com.abc.android.abcd/content/ Transformers.mp4");
It cannot play.
Btw: familiar things occured when I display the jpeg file
bit = BitmapFactory.decodeFile(fileName); mImgView.setImageBitmap(bit);
If the fileName is /data/data/com.abc.android.abcd/content/2.jpeg It cannot display
While, If the fileName is /data/data/com.abc.android.abcd/2.jpeg It display well.

I am using a VideoView to display a video. I am using setOnPreparedListener and setOnCompletionListener to do stuff before and after the video starts and ends.
I was wondering how I could go about detecting some point of time in the video. For eg, say I want to write log to a file when the video has played for 10s. How can I detect the 10s mark?

I've got an Activity with two views set up in a ViewFlipper. One of the views is a layout with a GLSurfaceView and a few other widgets, the other just has a layout with a TextView and a VideoView. When I click on something in the GLSurfaceView, the ViewFlipper swaps so the video can play. In this screenshot, you can see the plain GLSurfaceView rendering a map on the left. On the right is what it looks like after the ViewFlipper has flipped and the video starts playing. The empty transparent area where the GLSurfaceView shows through is where the video is supposed to be. I can hear it playing through the speaker and the timeline is moving forward, so I know it's playing.

I have a problem in playing video file in android using VideoView. When I keep the .3gp video file locally in res/raw folder, the video file plays successfully. But when I keep this same file on live web server and stream it, it runs on Android G1, Nexus one and Tatoo which I have for testing. But It fails to stream and play on Motorola milestone. I got the error on device as: 'This video is not valid for streaming'. What problem it should be, I am really seek of finding it. Is it the issue of programming or file format?

I have two Activities: one with VideoView attached to MediaPlayer and the second one.
I start watching a video in the first Activity, then during playback I start second Activity.
After going back to first Activity I can hear sound but see no picture.
My Video Layout...
Do you have any ideas why video doesn't appear?

I have an issue with displaying videos on android devices.When any video is displayed it does not take the entire screen size of device even though i have given android:layout_width="fill_parent".There will being some blank space on either sides.for eg.if i have a video of 480 by 320 it will work on 480 by 320 device fine but on a device like say Nexus one it wont take the entire display of device ,there will be some blanl spaces on two sides. Is this a default feature of android devices or is there a solution to resolve this ?Why does not the "fill_parent" attribute work?

Best software for streaming audio/video from android to android, this question is 2 fold.
1 I would like to use my old POS zte racer android device with a restive screen and 3.2 mpxl camera as a video monitor in my babies room, over WiFi.
2 I would like to duct tape an old android device to the front of my RC monster truck and drive it through an apple store on fire. Over 3G or perhaps WiFi hotspot from my good phone, shared with the duct taped bumper droid.

Was wondering if it were possible to have it set so that Swype would be the default keyboard for portrait & whenever you switched to landscape, the default Android keyboard would pop up as the default?

Let's assume i got two activities "Main" and "Sub" Activity "Main" is forced into portrait orientation using setRequestedOrientation At some later point "Main" runs "Sub" using startActivityForResult.Somehow "Sub" also starts in portrait orientation while i would expect the call to setRequestedOrientation only to affect the calling activity.How do i get "Sub" to respect the system orientation while keeping "Main" locked in Portrait?

I've seen references to being able to specify two separate layout xml files for an activity, one for Portrait and one for Landscape. I've not been to find any information on how to do that though. How do I specify for each activity which xml file is it's portrait layout and which is the Landscape layout? Is it also possible to specify different layouts for different screen sizes? If so, how is this done?

Majority of devices will not be able to render 720p or 1080p video in 60 fps using Kitkat 4.4. I believe this has to do with downclocking the boost clock in order to get better battery life.

I am finding that my layouts tend to look great in one orientation but if I change the phone's orientation, things are a mess. For example on one screen I have 6 large buttons that look great in portrait orientation but if the user changes phone orientation, those buttons get cut off in portrait.
Do I need to code two layouts for every screen - one for portrait and one for landscape? That would be such a waste of time.

is there a fix for the Sluggish / Slow HD Video playback on devices with Kitkat ?
first I though that it was my Gnex since it doesn't have official kitkat support and etc
but then my brothers Nexus5 is experiencing the same problem
playing 1080p videos is slow , sluggish , dropping frames and etc...
already tried different players , MX Player , Dice Player , Bsplayer and etc..

Allshare video playback from other devices over wifi just stopped working. It was totally fine and I have absolutely no idea what happened. It still plays music and shows photos and all the files stored on external devices. The only problem is that it won't play video. It plays video stored locally or on sd card just fine, but when I want to play anything from my note 2 (n7105) or my pc's allshare app, video player shows error message: "Cannot play video. This video cannot be played".
It plays the same files just fine, when I copy them to the device, so I think it might be the case of some transcoding error. It is not a case of network settings - I've checked on 4 different wifi networks and it's the same everywhere. My note 2 works just fine on any wifi and plays all video from tablet or pc. Here is what I tried so far, with no results:
1. Restoring to factory defaults,
2. Wiping cache and dalvik cache,
3. Flashing fresh stock rom,
4. Erasing all allshare apps and video player data
N8020 & N7105 (JB 4.1.2 rooted + stock)

From what I've tried, the EVO only has portrait and left-oriented (aka turn the phone on its left side) landscape viewing. Is there any way to enable right-oriented landscape viewing (aka turn the phone on it's right side)? It is very difficult to hold the phone in left-landscape when it's charging and nearly impossible to type with two hands.

I am not sure, if this is the correct platform to talk about it, however I would like to know something about 'How Android supports the large screen display'. I mean here that suppose I want to port the Android SDK to a large portable device having a large display as compared to HTC G1 mobile screen, what all the OS modules (e.g surface manager, kernel: display driver etc) I need to look upon/modify.I guess what I am asking here is not a new subject as I can already see by below links that the Android OS is ported for large screen devices.

In Javascript/jQuery, how can I detect if the client device has a mouse?
I've got a site that slides up a little info panel when the user hovers their mouse over an item. I'm using jQuery.hoverIntent to detect the hover, but this obviously doesn't work on touchscreen devices like iPhone/iPad/Android. So on those devices I'd like to revert to tap to show the info panel.
