Android : Detect When Emulator Is Fully Booted
Sep 3, 2010
I want to create a script where I start an emulator and after the system is fully booted, I want to install an .apk.
How can I know when the emulator is fully booted so I can run the install command? Here http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/adb.html it is said that adb wait-for-device install <app>.apk is not correct.
So how can I achieve this? Is it possible? Is my only option to sleep for a few minutes until I can be sure that the emulator is started?

I would like to have my code run slightly differently when running on the emulator than when running on a device. (For example, using 10.0.2.2 instead of a public URL to run against a development server automatically.) What is the best way to detect when an Android application is running in the emulator?

Is there a simple way to detect that your code is running on the android emulator and not on a real device? I want to work around differences between emulator + real, e.g. with respect to network connectivity detection.

I rooted my phone back before 2.2 came out. I've played with CWM, made Nandroid and Titanium backups, removed bloat and installed most of the root only apps. What I haven't done yet is flash a ROM. This is mainly because it seems that while there are a crap ton of ROMs being developed out there all of them seem to either not be fully stable or are missing some sort of key feature (camera, videocam, bluetooth, LED, internal storage, etc).
Are there any ROMs that you folks are currently using that's stable and has all the features of the phone working? If not, what's the closest one that you've found?

Since Android 2.2, we can read the ANDROID_ID from the emulator which is always 9774D56D682E549C It breaks a lot of existing code that used to test if the ANDROID_ID was null to check whether the device was an emulator or not. I need a future proof way to test a device is an emulator.

I am rooting an Evo using unrevoked 3.21, everything was going fine until unrevoked says "rebooting into recover... recovery image: clockworkmod recovery" and the phone booted into Clockworkmod Recovery v 2.5.0.1 and it is all normal. but nothing has happened in 20 min. so does that mean it is done? But i thought when I rooted my Incredible that unrevoked told me i was finished... should I select reboot in the clockwork mod? or jsut do a nandroid real quick?

I was able to root my phone with this method when everything else failed. Try this if you have had trouble with other methods. I did not discover this, I heard it from someone on IRC (forgot who).
1. With your phone booted up and plugged in via USB, type adb reboot recovery.
2. Start your adb shell loop (using the while loop or bat file).
3. Click in and out your SD card repeatedly while the phone is booting into recovery (apparently every 0.5 sec will do).
4. Watch for "- exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2) -" to appear in your terminal
5. Follow the rest of the instructions at public:adb_in_recovery [RootWiki]

I have a six month old Epic 4G, rooted, CWM recovery,. I used Root Uninstaller to remove three of the annoying preloaded apps that I never use. Otherwise, my phone is stock. I'm still on the 2nd to last Gingerbread update, as the one that arrived in late Jan won't apply to my rooted phone. I doubt my problem is specific to the device, though, which is why I'm posting here. I have a 32GB SD connected to the phone.
The problem: I have a very irritating "warm reboot:"
1) After booting, the phone is sometimes (not always) extremely laggy. When I use a system monitor to see what is taking the CPU, it appears to be "System" that is taking all the CPU. If the phone is not obviously laggy when starting up, this problem does not occur.
2) The flash card scans always say they complete. It never reboots before these complete.
3) Although the flash scans have completed, it takes quite a while for all of my app icons to load, suggesting it is still going through the SD card.
4) Within a few minutes after booting, the screen goes black and the four soft keys light up. If the screen is already off when this happens, the screen first turns on briefly, and then goes black!
5) About five to fifteen seconds later, the GUI restarts and it starts scanning the flash.
What else I notice:
* The "uptime" reported is not reset, which tells me there was no actual "reboot."
* Once I can get it to boot without doing this, it's stable for days.
* Using the phone right after it boots seems to increase the chance of this happening, but it's hard to say.
* In the past, if I disabled WiFi and 4G and then went into airplane mode, this would greatly reduce the chance of this happening, but now my phone has been constantly warm rebooting even in airplane mode. The phone appears to be getting less stable with time.
* This does not appear to be correlated with phone temperature. The phone can be cool to the touch or warm to the touch and this will happen.
* I've tried wiping all the various caches before. Makes no difference.
Questions:
1) Is this a known issue that is not present in a 3rd party ROM?
2) Does moving a lot of apps to SD cause this? With only 1/2 GB of built-in app memory, I have no choice but to move almost everything to the SD.
3) Does having a LOT of files on the SD card cause this? I have many nandroid backups on the SD.
4) Is there a real name for this "reboot" that I can Google for? When I search for "reboot loop" or "warm reboot" I get unrelated failures. I saw one thread where someone mentioned a "sense reboot" but that seems to be an HTC thing?
5) If I clear off the SD card, or somehow signal that most directories are not to be scanned, will this make a difference?
6) How can I figure out what is going on, why the phone is restarting the UI? Does Android have a boot-up problem of being at 100% CPU for a few minutes that automatically causes a UI reset? As I said, once the phone boots without doing this warm boot, it will be stable for days.

I was letting my 6 year old niece play with my Eris. I booted up Steamy Windows for her to play with and it was quite amusing to her. Anyway, she gave me back the phone and when I went to the home screen I saw an icon in the task bar that I thought was a system update bar. All excited that 2.1 is finally here I pull down the bar to see its a notification from steamy windows thanking me for using it.

My friend just lost his Desire at an airport. The pattern lock is active, but that does nothing but protect the data on the phone - Not SD. The first thing they would do is to switch the phone off and replace the sim.
Now here is my question : Is there an app that will send an sms to a preallocated number if the phone is booted up with a different sim? I know some Samsung phones can do this. But having an app that requires your own sim to be able to find it if stolen is quite pointless.

Is there any way to fully mask browser ID (on default or other browser). On my "other" device, I could ID either the stock browser or Opera as IE and access non-mobile versions of sites that have sniffers.I do not see the same options on Android. I can disable mobile view but it will not get by some sites that still force mobile versions.

I own HTC Desire which has a built-in GPS. It's a really great option, but what really annoys me is this: when I use GPS, my data connection must also be enabled in order to refresh Google Maps. And since data packets in Croatia are still pretty expensive, this is not a option for me. Anyway, the question is: is there a way to fully download Maps to your SD Card without having data connection enabled, but GPS only?
So, just like with standard GPS devices.

Does anyone know of a way to have the Droid make an alert sound of your choice when the battery is fully charged? It would be awesome to hear when the battery is charged rather than have to keep checking visually at various intervals. I can't keep my hands off of the phone so I can get a little impatient during the charging process sometimes, I'd love to be able to "set it and forget it" until I hear the alert. If there isn't a way to do this, someone should figure out a way to make it so.

I signed up with a new Google account and apparently it didn't fully register because when I go to the market icon on my HTC I get "password invalid" message screen. I went to google and re-registered a new account but the phone still shows the old username and I can't get rid of it. Needless to say I need to put my new google username with the new password to access the apps. What can I do?

I need to capture the absolute positions of some ImageViews to use as drop targets. I can't seem to find what event I need to put my code in to read the screen and get the Left(), Top() .. positions. I do not want monitor the inflation of each individual view. There must be some sort of onScreenFinsihed type of event, but I can't find it. onMeasure and onDraw seem to fire at the start of their work, I need to know when they are done.

I would appreciate to hear from you what would be the available options in Android to perform a lossless jpeg rotation of a jpeg image -> Rearranging the image data from landscape to portrait by rotation without ever fully decoding the image. My problem is that my device's camera always take the images in landscape mode and sometimes I would need to rotate the image to portrait to be used in my application. This takes time and memory if I need to do it in the standard way (decode the image, apply rotation operation to the pixels and encode again). Doing it without decoding the image would bring a significant improvement in performance. I have seen that in Android platform (Cupcake) jpegtran.c (which performs this operation beautifully) is available under /external/jpeg but this functionality is not available (a.f.a.k) on the application framework. How can I use this function? I guess I need to use JNI to be able to access this functionality, right? Other ways? Could you give me any hint on how I could do this or if there is another easier and quicker way to do it?

Finally strace gave me this:
CODE:................
And several other attempts to call "link" that also fail (sshfs does not support hard links).
Is it possible to change the emulator's behavior to create lock files somewhere in /tmp (using some hash of image path as lock file name)? I am OK to try this myself: which repositories from https://android.git.kernel.org/ are necessary to rebuild the emulator alone, and where in the sources is the code responsible for image locks?

I need to run several emulator instances to test my application. When i try to run instances using emulator -data <path> option, the emulator crashes.
I got a MS Visual Studio window informing that emulator throws a "unhandled win32 exception".
The exception message in the debugger (MS Visual Studio 2008) is: "Unhandled exception at 0x77c4706c in emulator.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x03216848"
The emulator runs normally without "-data" option.
