I've created an app that functions as a countdown timer via a thread, a wakelock, and a handler back to my activity. My question is, what will cause my thread to die, or app to not be running in memory anymore? I've had this happen once, and can't seem to recreate it again.

I was rather surprised to find a couple of features missing from android, having just moved from a sony-ericsson w200i (a phone which i bought for a fifth of the price of my new galaxy), in which these features seemed obvious
i did get tone picker to sort out the lacking ringtone settings etc. but when i tried to find a simple countdown app i hit a bit of a wall
from the ones i tested out, "oi countdown" and "countdown alarm" seemed to work ok up until the point the alarm rang and i couldn't shut the thing up in any other way than booting the whole phone
"snappy countdown timer" is the closest i've found for a simple app to remind you when your pizza is done, but that has the annoying issue of the ui being way too sensitive to pick a specific time (on minute-scale)
so is there a simple app to do the job of an egg timer that actually works?

As a part of my app I would like to include a countdown timer.
I would much rather have the timer count in minutes and seconds, so any good tutorial to set such a timer up I would rather they point me in that direction first (I have looked)
My problem is that I'm getting this error when I press the button to open the activity
02-27 21:07:47.776: E/AndroidRuntime(711): Uncaught handler: thread main exiting due to uncaught exception
02-27 21:07:47.786: E/AndroidRuntime(711): java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to start activity ComponentInfo{converter.units.kitchen/converter.units.kitchen.Timer}: java.lang.NullPointerException
I currently have the following java activity
import
android.app.Activity;
import
android.os.Bundle;
import
android.os.CountDownTimer;
import
[code]....
It was working fine when I had a fixed number as the starting value, although since reverting to a fixed number it still does not work.

One thing that really bothers me about Google Now on a mobile device is that if you say "Set a timer for 'x' minutes" it will set an alarm (vs a countdown timer) for 'x' minutes into the future. If you say the same command to Google Search on Chrome on a PC it will set a countdown timer. I would really like it if I could just say "Okay Google (Now)... Set a timer for 10 minutes" and then have it start counting down.
Does KK updates Google Now to the ability to set a timer?

Trying to create a simple 1 minute timer. I want it to start once a user hits a button (in this case the button's ID is 'Tap'), and at 00:00, I want a message to popup. I also have a reset button, when a user clicks that I want it to reset to 1:00.

Anyone have experience with a good countdown timer that works well with Droid? I think I downloaded the "Ultimate Stopwatch" once and it didn't work well (The alarm sound was way too soft). There are dozens of timer apps, and it seems people have various problems with all of them, aside from maybe a few pay ones. But I just want something really simple. Just for timing things like cooking stuff in the oven and poker games. Any suggestions?

Is the alarm on the installed countdown timer really really low on everyone else's phone? I use the same style ringer for my alarm clock and timer. The clock is fine, but the timer alarm is so low it can barely be heard at the highest setting, 7. Is this normal?

62 hours and 24% battery still remaining. This is after my initial period of hammering on the phone and back to my normal daily usage pattern which is like a blackberry user (some phone calls in and out, lots of email, at least a few every 30 minutes during the day and early evening). What this means for me as a blackberry user is that I can now confidently switch over from blackberry to the Evo as primary phone and get through a normal day (16 hours) without needing a mid-day charge.
Here are settings from my testing experience that I wish I had known when I first got the EVO at Google I/O:
1. Add to home sense screen:
widget: Power Control Android
widget: settings, 4G
widget: settings: Hotspot
2. Install android market apps (free):
Advanced Task Killer
Spare Parts
K-9 Mail
3. Run Advanced Task Killer (some disagree, do what you want. I'll revisit and retest this when 2.2 gets released by HTC for the EVO. I don't need sprint navigation, sprint tv, etc. to ever be running since I will use google navigation. I haven't had time to do another endurance test without using ATK and I'm not planning to do another endurance test)
Deselect things you actually want to keep running in the background, e.g.:
voice dialer
voice search
google voice
calendar
k-9 mail
gmail
....
Kill selected apps
ATK will put a notification up at each boot and remember your selections so it's easy to re-kill off all the sprint and other apps you don't normally want 'running' in the background.
4. Turn off 4G and hotspot on the main page with widgets installed.
Note: I found I don't need to disable gps or bluetooth since with streamlined apps running nothing is using them unless I want it to and I want my bluetooth to automatically pickup when I get in the car.
5. Turn screen brightness to low or medium using widget icon. this disables auto brightness but the lower screen brightness seems fine for me. When outside in the sun just click it up if needed
6. Settings Wireless and Networks, Wi-Fi Settings, <menu button> Advanced, Wi-Fi sleep policy, Never.
It's a bit counterintuitive, but I've tested it out both ways and confirmed the articles that recommend this. The phone uses dramatically less power in this state as opposed to auto sleeping wi-fi which turns on the 3G radio. Dramatic as in without keeping wi-fi alive overnight my battery went from like 70% to almost nothing during earlier tests.
7. <optional> Run the battery from a full charge to completely drained once. I'm not sure if this had an effect or not, just putting it in because I did it once before this current long runtime since charge to make sure the battery was properly profiled. It's easy to do with 4G on and watching HD youtube videos.
8. K-9 versus gmail client. I'm seeing much more cpu usage from gmail client versus K-9. I have work email on a host service that supports imap idle (rackspace). The imap idle push seems to really save on cpu usage and my work email delivers as fast to the Evo as it does to my blackberry. I like the gmail client for my personal mail but may end up switching my gmail.com to deliver via K-9 instead to really save on battery. Needs more exploring but it appears the gmail client 'push' is not as efficient as the imap idle.
9. Summary, when you want to show off your 4G Youtube HD or use the phone as a mobile hotspot, just click on the 4G and away it goes. But normally keep that radio off since you don't actually need it and it's a huge power drain. With the widget installed this becomes an easy habit.

When I installed DamageControl v2.08.1 on my cdma Hero the calendar and date are 24 hours off! Time is correct but it's the next day. When I did a back up of this install it even used the wrong date on the backup. I have a bunch of small issues that I think with patience I may be able to work around but this clock/date thing has me puzzled. Also has anyone figured out how to put a custom city in for the weather widget and not one of the ones listed but for example a small town (any town) some where in the USA? I could do this on my 1.5 but this weather widget acts like the clock and you can only use their listed cities.

I'd like to set the ringer mode to silent for specific events in the future. It should only happen if a checkbox in the preferences is checked. I know that I have to update the manifest for the permissions and also that I can set the ringer mode with something like this:
if (getPreferences(MODE_PRIVATE).getBoolean(PREFS_KEY_SILENTOPTION, false)) {
AudioManager audioManager = (AudioManager) getSystemService(AUDIO_SERVICE);
audioManager.setRingerMode(AudioManager.RINGER_MODE_SILENT);
}
But how can I set (and reset) it for a space of time in the future?

Wondering if anyone knows of an application that can automatically dial a number at a set date and time. I have a meeting to attend, and I need to call my house at a certain time to make sure my kid gets up for school. They ignore the alarm clock, but always wake up when the phone rings. I can't use my phone during the meeting.

I'm going to ask a SHORTENED version of my question FIRST because, as I was typing out my thorough explanation below, I realized that I had SEEN A SETTING that I believe fixes my problem but I CANNOT REMEMBER where it is or how to get to it!
In short, the problem I am having is that NON-recurring events (one time appointment) that are in the Google Calendar online are NOT SHOWING in the Moment calendar app.
There was a SETTINGS PAGE...not sure if it was in the main OS menu or the Calendar menu...that gave you the option of choosing to show events "BEFORE" a certain date and to show events "AFTER" a certain date. You repeatedly tap the two "before" or "after" options and the dates would move further back in time and further forward in time respectively. NON-recurring events, obviously, continue to show for years prior or in the future but NON-recurring ONE-time events outside of a "range" of a time period do NOT SHOW. Does ANYONE know what the setting I am referring to and how to get back to it?
If NOT, perhaps my more thorough explanation of my problem and what i am trying to accomplish below might help me find the display before this date/after this date setting that I cannot find again!
Though we are new to Android and the gmail sync, I am very comfortable with the sync process and working with Google Calendar online or on the phone and the settings for forcing a sync, choosing which calendars to display, etc.
I did some troubleshooting of the problem and THIS is what I have figured out...WEIRD!!!...here goes:
It appears that the calendar on the Moment is ONLY showing RECURRING EVENTS...birthdays, anniversaries...ANYTHING where the event is set to recur some time in the future.
The non-recurring events...a random party, a random doctor's appointment does NOT show on the Moment Calendar app!
I prefaced my issue with being comfortable and familiar with the Google calendar operation because I am CERTAIN that the events are in the Google Calendar online. If I change the one-time event to a yearly recurring event and force the phone to sync then WHAM BAM the now RECURRING event shows in the Moment calendar app. REMOVE the recurrence and go back to the one-time doctor appointment, sync, and WHOOSH, disappears again!
The other odd thing is that "old" NON-recurring events that have ALREADY PASSED do seem to continue to show on the Moment calendar app for about a month. In other words, stuff back to about a month from today (today 7/20) DOES SHOW even if non-recurring but anything older than a month does NOT show.
Now I can UNDERSTAND why if you had a doctor's appointment on May 20, 2010, that that even should NOT appear on EITHER your Google Calendar online OR your Moment calendar app for May 20, **2011** because that doesn't make sense. HOWEVER, it DOES make sense and IS IMPORTANT to be able to go back to May 2010 and ask, "what day was that appointment with so-and-so company??" and you scroll back in your calendar to see the name of the company or "In February, 2010, did our son or daughter see the doctor?? and you scroll back a few months to see that your son and not your daughter went.
The Google Calendar online does NOT automatically purge older events...they are ALL VISIBLE online back YEARS AND YEARS. Why is the Moment "purging"/not displaying non-recurring events on the phone that are in a range of about 1 month old to about to happen in a month?

I need someone to test my First app I did. It is reworked and extended version of Android DatePicker app here: Date Picker | Android Developers. I don't have Android creature, because I am out of the Google test area. My app shows Time Duration using the DatePicker Dialog twice
The result can be seen on the image.
Please email me and I'll attach the tDurator.apk for you. I need feedback about the working state of the app when rotating the Nexus 1 device, but anyone having at least Android system 1.5 (level 3 on the SDK) can run the app. The app is signed for release and in not harm to the phone.
