Android :: Change In Way Input-lines Act When Updating To 2.2

May 25, 2010

I have a calculator type app that I've developed and it's on the Android Market. It uses two input-lines (EditText) and has always worked well until I updated my Nexus One to Android 2.2.

When I would touch the input line, the soft keypad would pop-up automatically, lift up the focused input line into view, and then I would type in my numbers...no problems. But when I updated to Android 2.2, the soft keypad doesn't lift the focused input line far enough and it's only half in view. Then when I scroll down to the next input line, it doesn't lift up either and it's only about 1/4 of the way into view. Another problem is that, sometimes, when I go back and forth between the two input lines and then try to enter numbers - the numbers don't appear but they do when I scroll left. Hard to explain exactly what is happening but something strange is going on there that didn't happen under my Android 2.1 and other lower versions.

I even tried to change some input line (EditText) statements in my code and also tried to change the way the soft keypad would 'pad' the view to the top but things still didn't work after I recompiled. (android:windowSoftInputMode and android:inputType)

I also wonder if they made the soft keypad in 2.2 a little bigger in height. Does anybody out there with 2.2 mess with an app that has input lines where their softkeypad has to move the input line up into view - does it work for you?

Android :: Draw Transparent Lines On Bitmap Via Touch Input

Jul 23, 2010

I am working on a paint application for Android. Now I want to implement an eraser to allow erasing parts of a loaded bitmap by using touch input and making the bitmap transparent along the finger's path.

A very good example of what I try to achieve is shown in the application Steamy Window for Android. Steamy Window simulates a fogged window, where a user can wipe parts of the fog via touch input.

UPDATE: I have posted the most important sections of my current code below. I am not really happy with it for the following reasons:

Drawing is quite sluggish. What can I improve here?
I am looking for a way to use an alpha mask in order to set the pixel transparency/alpha of the pixels as I want to simulate a paint brush. Any suggestions how this could be achieved?

HTC Incredible :: URL Input - Autocorrect Not Updating Properly

Aug 28, 2010

When I try to enter something into the url/search bar on either the stock browser or dolphin hd (which is what I normally use) one of two things happens. Either the input box simply closes after a few keystrokes and I have to start from scratch, or the input on my screen doesnt match up with what is actually sent. Generally, the autocorrect will not be updating properly, and will refuse to even give me the option to send what I've written and will insist I go to a previous page, even If I just want to do a Google search from the bar.

Other times, it will start to accept input into the suggestion window but stop after a few letters, and when I hit return to go, it will only take those few letters it has acknowledged, rather than what is actually in the Input window. The only work around I've found Is that if I just close the keyboard and click the box again, the correction window will be gone and it will use the text I'd entered. This is only if I am in the version of they keyboard with the .com shortcut, e.g. URL entry. The fact that it happens in multiple browsers make me feel like it's a problem with how the sense keyboard is handling URL input.

Android :: Quick Change Input Language

Jun 29, 2009

I always configure the UI of my mobile phones with english. But I write sms in French, German, English & Spanish. Android does not seem to offer the possibility to quickly change the input language of the keyboard. It looks like UI language both determines keyboard layout and input language, which is EXTREMELY inconvenient for someone using several languages on a daily basis. Does it exist a workaround, an external app or a feature I oversaw to solve this MAJOR drawback?

Android :: Change Internal Buffer Size Of Data Input Stream

Apr 1, 2010

I'm using this kind of code for my TCP/IP connection:

sock = new Socket(host, port);
sock.setKeepAlive(true);
din = new DataInputStream(sock.getInputStream());
dout = new DataOutputStream(sock.getOutputStream());

Then, in separate thread I'm checking din.available() bytes to see if there are some incoming packets to read. The problem is, that if a packet bigger than 2048 bytes arrives, the din.available() returns 2048 anyway. Just like there was a 2048 internal buffer. I can't read those 2048 bytes when I know it's not the full packet my application is waiting for. If I don't read it however - it'll all stuck at 2048 bytes and never receive more. Can I enlarge the buffer size of DataInputStream somehow? Socket receive buffer is 16384 as returned by sock.getReceiveBufferSize() so it's not the socket limiting me to 2048 bytes. If there is no way to increase the DataInputStream buffer size - I guess the only way is to declare my own buffer and read everything from DataInputStream to that buffer?

Android :: Input Field With Custom Input Method

Jan 6, 2010

I would like to show a custom input field (specifically, one containing only 9-0 and two extra buttons containing decimal separator (, or .) and a delete button). I could create a custom IME, but (as far as I know) that would have to be set by the user as the system-wide input method. Is there a way to implement an input method and bind it to a specific input field?

Android :: Android - NotifyDataSetChanged() Not Updating Listview After Orientation Change

Jun 21, 2010

On a click event I create a thread and start a long-running operation based on this method. After the long-running task is completed, it does a callback to another method, which does a post to the handler:

@Override
public void contentSearchModelChanged(Model_ContentSearch csm, ArrayList<Class_Reminder> newRemindersList) {
remindersList = newRemindersList;
mHandler.post(mUpdateDisplayRunnable);
}...........

This works beautifully when I do this normally. However, if I change the orientation while the long-running operation is running, it doesn't work. It does make the callback properly, and the remindersList does have items in it. But when it gets to this line:

r_adapter.notifyDataSetChanged();

Nothing happens. The odd thing is, if I do another submit and have it run the whole process again (without changing orientation), it actually updates the view twice, once for the previous submit and again for the next. So the view updates once with the results of the first submit, then again with the results of the second submit a second later. So the adapater DID get the data, it just isn't refreshing the view. I know this has something to do with the orientation change, but I can't for the life of me figure out why. can anyone suggest an alternative method of handling threads with orientation changes?

Motorola Droid X :: Widgets Not Updating / Stop Updating

Jul 24, 2010

Anyone having trouble with widgets stop updating? Like my clock/calendar/weather/news/pretty much any widget i have stops updating after an hour. So i look at my clock widget two hours later and it is an hour behind. Happens to ALL my widgets.Even the quick turn on/off wifi,bt,gps and such. They just stop updating/showing animation.I have ADW launcher installed. I am wondering if it is that. I do not really want to remove it as i hate the stock 3 button interface at the bottom (why do i need a contacts and phone, just use the phone to look thru contacts, wasted space IMO) and am quite keen on keeping the 5 button.Any ideas? If i power off the phone and turn it back on it's fine again for about an hour. SOmetimes randomly thru the day it will start updating and working fine again then randomly stop again.

Android :: Two Misplaced Lines In UI For Activity

Oct 4, 2010

I have a problem with designing an UI Android activity. There are two blocks of misplaced graphics on the left and right of the activity - they are two lines just bellow the titlebar with 1px height and about 5-10px width. They cause buttons to break at their left and right parts. I cannot figure out what the problem is. I am using Eclipse with Android SDK 0.9.9. The lines appear not only with the emulator but in a HTC Wildfire (Android 2.1). These lines are also visible in a newly created Android project (HelloWorld).

Android :: Emulator Bug Drawing Lines On GLSurfaceView

Aug 14, 2010

The Emulator draws line widths VERY incorrectly in OpenGL (GLSurfaceView). See http://www.flickr.com/photos/53002505@N03 for a comparison of the lines drawn correctly (in JOGL) and incorrectly in the emulator. The code also draws correctly on a real device (G1) - looks just like the JOGL screen shot. I believe this is a bug. However, I'm not an OpenGL GURU. Hence I have posted a concise version of the code to demonstrate this problem at at http://gist.github.com/523955 and http://gist.github.com/523961. I hope I am proven wrong about a bug in the emulator, and can find a way to use the emulator for what I want to do.
