Android :: Get HTC Eris To Show Up As Device Target On Eclipse 3.5 Running On Mac OS X?
Feb 16, 2010
My Motorola Droid shows up just fine in this configuration and appears as a deployment target. Works like a snap. How do I get the HTC Eris Droid to show up as a deployment target? Is there some special driver needed for the Eris?

I installed newst Android, JDK, Jer and eclipse. Than I tryed to build android project. But "build target" show "no target available". I looked at internet, they said I should run "Android SDK and AVD manager", I runed it but get follow message: Failed to fetch URL https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/repository.xml, reason: No route to host: connect
I read this group's conversation that suggest to use http not https, I tried it but still can not run Available Packages.

I believe I have found a glitch in the Eclipse Android SDK. I use my notebook for Android development and have noticed that when I try to create a new project, the "Build Target" section of the New Android Project dialog is unusable because of the small screen size. My notebook's screen resolution is 1366x768 and you can see what I mean in my screenshot here: http://imagebin.org/105099.
Does anyone have any suggestion on how to go about getting this fixed? Eclipse + Android is impossible to use on my notebook because of this bug. (Because the Build target cannot be set, I cannot progress through the dialog to create the project). I'm limited to developing in Genny and compiling manually for now.

I followed these tutorials to set up a Hello World Android app. But when I create a new java project I can't select a build target. It just says no targets available in the target selection box. I have confirmed that I am not having the UI issue described here (http://blog.rowancrane.com/2009/12/27/eclipse-new-android-project-cant-select-build-type-target), I actually have a message in the box saying there are no targets instead of an empty box. I also am using 1920x1080 res.
I'm guessing that eclipse is just not aware of my Android Targets? I installed them in the android SDK manager and see them listed under installed packages in the Android SDK manager (1.1, 1.6, ..., 2.2)
http://fyi.oreilly.com/2009/02/setting-up-your-android-develo.html
http://developer.android.com/resources/tutorials/hello-world.html
Any suggestions on how I can create the project and get started?

my goal is to target with a keyevent a specific application running either in foreground or background from a background service. I tried many solutions, but have not yet managed to do it. The few solutions tried (all from a background running service): With a broadcast, I tried to target the first application (for example the phone app) that would manage the key event
KeyEvent lKey1Up = new KeyEvent(KeyEvent.ACTION_UP,KeyEvent.KEYCODE_ENDCALL);
KeyEvent lKey1Dwn = new KeyEvent(KeyEvent.ACTION_DOWN,KeyEvent.KEYCODE_ENDCALL);
Intent lKey1UpIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_MEDIA_BUTTON);
Intent lKey1DwnIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_MEDIA_BUTTON);
lKey1UpIntent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_KEY_EVENT, lKey1Up);
lKey1DwnIntent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_KEY_EVENT, lKey1Dwn );
sendOrderedBroadcast(lKey1UpIntent, null);
sendOrderedBroadcast(lKey1DwnIntent, null);
=> Nothing happens with my foreground phone app when the broadcast is performed while I am in a phone call state (OFFHOOK). Indeed, I was nearly sure this would not work since I have no way to specificely target the phone app.............

This is more of an Eclipse error than an Android or Ant error. My Eclipse project won't build because when it sees the build.xml created from the Android command, it starts looking for the debug and release commands. Well, since they are dynamically generated from the <setup> task, they don't exist. So now Eclipse (Build id: 20100218-1602) locking the project from build/run based on these errors. kay.. so here is the weird part: It worked this morning. In fact it has been working for weeks with the build.xml file sitting there. All I did was edit the build.xml file in Eclipse (changed some constants). Ant thinks everything is peachy.

My Android project in Eclipse has a build target of Android 1.5. I am trying to change the "project build target" by Windows --> Preferences --> Android. I select a different Target Name like "Android 2.2". I click Apply and OK. When I go back in the build target is still "Android 1.5".
I am using Eclipse Galileo and have recently upgrade to the latest ADT Plugin and SDK.
This always worked before the upgrade. Why Eclipse is not changing the "project build target"?

Just wondering which mobile device should i target first for my application after a bit googling i found Android dev phone 1 and android developer phone 2 but does this device have or support Android 2.1 ? Or can i target some other device like motorola droid for my development and testing ? What would be the pros and cons in this situation?

What are the differences between building for target 2 (no gmaps add on) and target 3 (with gmaps addon).
Could any one has the ant scripts to bulids for these targets.
I see 1.5 SDK does these though custom ant tasks rather than 1.1 ant scripts (this was more clear and apperant on how it does the build)

I have created an hprof file by inserting the statement Debug.dumpHprofData("/sdcard/myapp.hprof"); in my app's code; I have then run the hprof file through hprof-conv and opened the converted file in Eclipse.
Following the advice of the MAT "Cheat Sheet" I have obtained an analysis of my app's memory usage by going to "Leak Identification -> Component Report" entering "com.prepbgg.*" and hitting Finish.
I know that my app is consuming large amounts of memory: in particular at the stage where I called dumpHprofData it had a one megapixel bitmap object and a canvas that must have consumes several hundred KB. (I also suspect that it is leaking significant amounts of memory because performance degrades severely after the screen has been rotated a few times.)
However, the Component Report for com.prepbgg.* shows total memory of only 38.7KB. The Histogram view shows for android.graphics.Bitmap (presumably this is the total of all apps including mine) 404 objects and Shallow Heap 12,928. Is that 12,928 bytes?
Clearly, my app consumes more than 38.7KB and the Bitmap far more than 12,928 bytes. Where am I going wrong? How can I see the total memory consumed by my app?

I have issue with running apps in emulator from Eclipse. I was using tutorials from http://developer.android.com: http://developer.android.com/guide/tutorials/hello-world.html http://developer.android.com/resources/tutorials/hello-world.html
Also, i tried running sample projects delivered with SDK. Whenever i run project, emulator loads but my project is not installed. And when emulator loads, nothing happens. I was searching on web a bit, and i figured that if i restart 'server' it continues to install my app:
android-sdk ools>adb kill-server - D:...android-sdk ools>adb start-server - * daemon not running. starting it now * - * daemon started successfully *
Log:
New emulator found: emulator-5554 - Waiting for HOME ('android.process.acore') to be launched.

I set up Eclipse as directed on the android development site, and ran the emulator after building one of the sample apps. The emulator comes up and just displays some text and doesn't function after that. The program doesn't even seem to run. I am following the steps on the site exactly (or at least I think I am), but no matter what program I try to run on the Emulator it never seems to function (just displaying that same message).

How to run the emulator within eclipse without using ADT. All I want to do is run the emulator with -partition-size option of the emulator and you cant do this by default. Im sure there might be a tricky way of doing this but googling doesn't give me any clues. does any one know ? I also thought about running the emulator as part of a script and call the script within eclipse.

I'm using Windows 7 and installed the 64 bit version of Eclipse 3.5.2. I then installed the Android ADT plugin, but when I try to configure it in the Windows > Preferences dialog, the Android Plugin doesn't show up in the left pane. Instead I see DDMS. This prevents me from specifying the location of the Android SDK (unless there is another way) to give me the appropriate templates and such.

When launching my app from within Eclipse, sometimes the running emulator is found and displayed in the launch dialog, sometimes it isn't?! Killing adb, the emulator and Eclipse usually helps until it happens again. Any idea why this is? I see this behavior since the launch of Android. I am running on Mac OS X. And it happened on Leopard as well as Snow Leopard.

Just upgraded to 3.6 after this whole Sun/Oracle JVM fix/debacle and I notices that 3.6 EE runs super, duper slow. So slow to the point that code assist is unusable. Here are some changes I made to the config to make it operate a lot better:
eclipse.ini: replace the end with this:
-Dosgi.requiredJavaVersion=1.6
-XX:MaxPermSize=512m
-Xms128m
-Xmx1024m
And turn off JAX-WS Proposals in Content Assist Window > Preferences > Java > Editor > Content Assist > Advanced. I also disabled JPA and PDE, but you might need them depending on what you're doing.

I am trying to write an android application and my workflow is as follows:
Write some code
Click run as Android Application
Eclipse then starts the android emulator
Install the app on the emulator
Run it
It seems to me that there is no need for it to start an android emulator(3) each time and to kill it. It'd be nice if there was a way an android emulator always running and eclipse just installs/uninstalls the app instead of making me wait every time.

I setup Hello Android sample app on my Eclipse ( Windows XP). ADT got installed correctly. All post installation config also looks good. I setup HelloAndroid project.
I run first time . It was successfully run and connected to emulator , produced desied message on emulator.
What happened , when i tried to run same program again it stopped working at console trace ( see below console trace). I tried to reset Adb from debug view. Also tried to kill Adb from command line. I completely exited from Eclipse and restarted. At last completely rebooted PC but no luck. I never changed my code a bit after running successfully first time.
Hello Android stops at following message.
[2010-07-08 16:08:59 - HelloAndroid] Starting activity com.example.helloandroid.HelloAndroid on device
[2010-07-08 16:09:02 - HelloAndroid] ActivityManager: Starting: Intent { act=android.intent.action.MAIN cat=[android.intent.category.LAUNCHER] cmp=com.example.helloandroid/.HelloAndroid }

adb can see the device (from adb devices), and I've installed Eclipse/ ADB.
I can't work out how to get debug to use the device instead of the simulator though.
