Android :: Avoiding Black Screen On Application Startup
Apr 6, 2010
When I start my application initially, I get a black screen which stays for a few seconds before my main activity starts. In case of iphone an image with name default is displayed for that split second. I am not sure how to do the same in android. I tried as below in vain
<activity android:name=".Index" android:label="@string/app_name"
android:screenOrientation="portrait" android:theme="@drawable/defaultimage">
<intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter> </activity>

in my app, I came into an Activity from the pre Activity's UI (such as:click a TextView which has added OnClickListener), like this way, after several times, I came into a deeper Activity. I left it for a while (such as left away) , when I came back ,I returned the Activity before the last Activity. then I got a black screen.

I just bought my Droid X a couple of weeks ago (2.2 and Rooted). It wanted to do some auto app updates and I told it to do them all not sure if it was before or after that that I noticed a red light by the ear "piece/speaker" and the phone was on and a battery level warning came on which I thought was premature. I plugged in the power cord the light went to green and I looked over a few minutes later and it was dead. I could be a little off on what happened when but that's what happened.
It wont power on now and I've tried holding a few different buttons while powering on and still nothing. I did check the settings the other day and it was successfully backing itself up not sure how to use that backup though. I just looked over after typing this post and the Motorola "M" was on the screen but I couldn't get it to do anything so I pulled the battery and tried again to boot it and nothing.

I am currently working on a multi-threaded game application for the Android platform. so far so good. I just got over a bug in my application which caused it to restart on orientation change (fixed by designating a specific orientation depending on the availability of a hardware keyboard or not, which is important 'cuz it is an online game with chat capabilities), and that works. BUT now i am trying to avoid the same problem when the user simply slides open the hardware keyboard. I'm not quite sure how to go about avoiding the restart of my application or the saving of the state of my application. Any solutions/suggestions?

Since I'm running ICS, I can no longer play GTA 3. The application shuts down after 3 seconds of cranking (black screen). This is not the version of Play store.

My aunt gave me a Samsung Galaxy S2 and everything was fine, except that it didn't let me register to the network. The next day it told me that it had to do an update so I did the update. After the update the home screen turned black and pressing the buttons didn't do anything. After a while an error pops up saying "application is not responding" and then the screen just stays black. The top bar works just fine and I can even go on the internet, play games, practically do everything. I did a factory reset by pressing Volume up + Home + Power 3 times already, but the only thing that changed is that the language turned into German.. the screen stays black. It had nothing to do with Rooting or Flashing, because I don't even know what that is.

Other than downloading a 3rd party application that auto-starts apps on boot, is there a way within the OS itself to autostart programs when the phone reboots? I have a few apps I use for work and would be nice if they autostarted on my Droid without having to launch each one independently.

I am writing a app that reads a file from the internal storage on startup. I have followed the guildelines here:
http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/data/data-storage.html#file...
It successfully works on the emulator, and I can find the file my app created under
DDMS > data > data > com.MyAppName > files.
Now I would like to install my app on a real device, but do I need to explicitly copy the file onto the device? If so, what's the location should I copy the file to? Or will the file be created when I install my app? I need some pointers or guidelines, I'm quite clueless about the device. Or perhaps if anyone knows any keywords for me to search for an answer.

I am trying to change the screen size of the emulator and see on the site that they tell you what commands to use, but it doesnt' tell you HOW to do it. how I would change the screen size. I believe this occurs on startup. I have eclipse as well, but would rather just shell into it and change it whenever I want.

I'm using a Drioid Eris version 2.1. When I turn on my phone it stays on the starting screen (the androids on skateboards) and won't go to the next one. I think it may have happened after I updated my SD Card Reader app because that's the only thing I can think of that caused this problem, thought it might be something else. How do I fix this?

I'm debugging my first Android app and when running in the emulator it seems fine. The main view appears and no edit fields have focus. I see the full screen including the introduction text at the top.
When I start this on my Vodafone 858 Smart phone, the view scrolls down to the first edit field (which is a phone number field) and also pops up the number pad. I have removed the 'focus' tags from my mains.xml, so I do not see why it's scrolling to the first edit field.
Android SDK 2.2 (8)
what I can modify to prevent this?

Every time I start my phone it seems that every program in the app catalog starts up. Until I activate the Advanced Task Killer and shut them all down, the thing runs like a hog. I have quite a few programs installed, but I dont use them all all of the time. Why do they all start up and is there any way beside the ATK to stop them? Is there any way to modify the startup files?

In my application, I am going to create a few listviews that are dependent on the listview before it. For example,Then, depending on user choice, will go next screen, let's say, it contains a submenu of each type of school, that may be different or may be the same to other states. What I want to know, is how to populate these different lists dynamically as the user goes on? I don't know what the best of doing this is, and I seem to be looking in the all the wrong places because I keep getting stuck. Once all the data is added into whatever structure is used, it will be static. I basically just need help as to how to code information into some sort of hashtable or anything of the sort that can be easily referenced, and later when the Application is updated, be able to add more schools/states/submenus etc.

I had an issue flashing the newest version of the leedroid ROM. To start my phone was running stock un-rooted Android 2.1. This is what I've done
1) Rooted the device using the Unrevoked method. Everything with this went fine. I get the Superuser app and I can get the '#' prompt at a terminal.
2) Then I partitioned my SD card using Rom Manager in preparation for A2SD+
3) Then I booted into clockwork mod recovery and wiped data/factory reset, wiped cache, and wiped dalvik cache
4) Then I tried to flash the leedroid rom from zip on the sd card
After reboot my phone appears to be stuck on the HTC screen and will not move forward. But if I take out the battery I can boot back into recovery mode. So it appears my phone is not broken, but it clearly isn't working. I've tried flashing a number of different ROMs but get the same result each time.

I think I might be in serious trouble here. I'm new to smartphones in general and wanted to root my Evo so that I could get rid of that annoying bloatware and maybe find some cool functionality.I'm new to forums too, but I did dig through a ton before I posted this and didn't see a solution to my problem.I used unrevoked 3 to root the phone. Worked fine. Tried to install Fresh through Rom Manager, but couldn't get it to flash by installing from sd card. Sort of abandoned that and moved on to Bugless Beast. I downloaded that to my computer transferred to my phone and tried "install from sd card" again. No luck, it just gave me the startup screen "htc evo 4g" and stayed on.I used nandroid to restore to my previous settings with no problem. I decided to partition the hardrive and try to flash bugless beast again. This would have been fine, but I didn't realize that partitioning removed the clockwise back up file. So, now I don't have anything to restore back to and it is stuck on the "htc evo 4g" screen.I can still get into the hboot, so its not a total loss yet.

Everytime I have to reboot, or if my battery dies, and I charge it and all that, and I press the power button, the screen just freezes at the HTC EVO 4G screen. I have to take out the cover, and pull the battery and by the time I do this 2-3 times, it finally boots correctly. I'm using Fresh 3.3.0.1 alongside netarchy 4.1.9.1 cfs.

Is there any way to changing this? Any app? (Guess: I might post a request app post for this). I love the way Droid starts, it looks robotic and metallic.

I just flashed the Charmeleon rom on my EVO LTE, it's the first one I've ever done. I read that it's possible to change the starting screen which has not only images of Pokemon but sound. Also it says 'HTC one.' Is there anyway I can change this? I simply don't want Pokemon images on my phone, let alone if I'm out in public and the Pokemon audio plays.

This was reported in the other thread about X8 Issues, but thought to start a new one to gather feedback from users. It's about the ''black screen'' freezing issue encountered by some users. I have had this several times since owning the phone for a few weeks, so it is a recurring issue. Problem: The phone hangs or appears to be shut down or become unresponsive suddenly. Pressing the hardware buttons doesn't help as the phone doesn't react at all. Solution: Take out cover and battery and restart.Observations: From my own observations, it's not actually a shutdown but a major freezing/hanging. Sometimes when it happens, I can still see vague shades of the display at an angle. After leaving the phone for a while in the pocket, the phone comes back to normal again. Not sure if this is true for all users with this problem. Anyway, gathering more feedback to see how prevalent the problem is, to evaluate whether I should take it to the SE service centre, or whether doing so will help at all.

1) After I make a call, the screen goes black in a matter of seconds. I'm typically using a headset when I notice this. To end the call (or enter numbers in a call menu) I need to press the sleep button to get the screen to light up again. This is a pain in the a$$.I have the screen timeout set for 2 mins.
2) About once or twice a day the home screen will lock where I can't press anything. I need to reboot to fix.
