Android :: Application Startup On Boot
Jun 8, 2010
Other than downloading a 3rd party application that auto-starts apps on boot, is there a way within the OS itself to autostart programs when the phone reboots? I have a few apps I use for work and would be nice if they autostarted on my Droid without having to launch each one independently.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any way to set the phone so that, if your phone is already turned off, it will boot/startup itself at a certain time?

This is starting to get really annoying. I'm trying to limit my use of the Advanced task Killer, but it seems like some apps REALLY LIKE being on and running - especially after a reboot.
I have NEVER used the FM Radio app, but it's always on - WHY?
Others, like YouTube and Key Ring, I use, but not very often - why would they be running after a reboot?

I have a Garmin-Asus A10 that i wanted to change its font using Type Fresh app. When the font changed the app required a reboot,, but when the phone rebooted it became unable to boot after the garmin-asus logo anymore !!
I tried a hard reset using the volume keys pressed with the power button but it displays "**WIPE USERDATA**" on the top left corner and nothing happened.There is an option to hold the volume up key with the power button that displays " USB POLLING MODE " in a blue screen.
My phone now is not able to boot properly and freezes on the startup logo.

When I start my application initially, I get a black screen which stays for a few seconds before my main activity starts. In case of iphone an image with name default is displayed for that split second. I am not sure how to do the same in android. I tried as below in vain
<activity android:name=".Index" android:label="@string/app_name"
android:screenOrientation="portrait" android:theme="@drawable/defaultimage">
<intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter> </activity>

How easy is it to make an application that's just a wrapper around the browser? Can the Android OS boot directly into that application so that only a certain application launches after boot. I'm building a client some custom software and I'd prefer to use one of those Archos 5 MIDs than a Linux netbook.

I am writing a app that reads a file from the internal storage on startup. I have followed the guildelines here:
http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/data/data-storage.html#file...
It successfully works on the emulator, and I can find the file my app created under
DDMS > data > data > com.MyAppName > files.
Now I would like to install my app on a real device, but do I need to explicitly copy the file onto the device? If so, what's the location should I copy the file to? Or will the file be created when I install my app? I need some pointers or guidelines, I'm quite clueless about the device. Or perhaps if anyone knows any keywords for me to search for an answer.

I'm debugging my first Android app and when running in the emulator it seems fine. The main view appears and no edit fields have focus. I see the full screen including the introduction text at the top.
When I start this on my Vodafone 858 Smart phone, the view scrolls down to the first edit field (which is a phone number field) and also pops up the number pad. I have removed the 'focus' tags from my mains.xml, so I do not see why it's scrolling to the first edit field.
Android SDK 2.2 (8)
what I can modify to prevent this?

Every time I start my phone it seems that every program in the app catalog starts up. Until I activate the Advanced Task Killer and shut them all down, the thing runs like a hog. I have quite a few programs installed, but I dont use them all all of the time. Why do they all start up and is there any way beside the ATK to stop them? Is there any way to modify the startup files?

In my application, I am going to create a few listviews that are dependent on the listview before it. For example,Then, depending on user choice, will go next screen, let's say, it contains a submenu of each type of school,that may be different or may be the same to other states.What I want to know, is how to populate these different lists dynamically as the user goes on? I don't know what the best of doing this is, and I seem to be looking in the all the wrong places because I keep getting stuck. Once all the data is added into whatever structure is used, it will be static. I basically just need help as to how to code information into some sort of hashtable or anything of the sort that can be easily referenced, and later when the Application is updated, be able to add more schools/states/submenus etc.

I just bought my Droid X a couple of weeks ago (2.2 and Rooted). It wanted to do some auto app updates and I told it to do them all not sure if it was before or after that that I noticed a red light by the ear "piece/speaker" and the phone was on and a battery level warning came on which I thought was premature. I plugged in the power cord the light went to green and I looked over a few minutes later and it was dead. I could be a little off on what happened when but that's what happened.
It wont power on now and I've tried holding a few different buttons while powering on and still nothing. I did check the settings the other day and it was successfully backing itself up not sure how to use that backup though. I just looked over after typing this post and the Motorola "M" was on the screen but I couldn't get it to do anything so I pulled the battery and tried again to boot it and nothing.

I have registered a Receiver component for ON_BOOT_COMPLETED broadcast, in my application. The receiver does just prints a line in its onReceive() callback. However, when I boot the emulator(by executing Run as->Android application command from Eclipse) and unlock the screen on start up, I get an ANR dialog displayed in my Application. at the moment I am thinking about a new app and need some information to decide whether to develop on Android or an alternative OS. I am particularly interested in "time to first screen", "boot-up time", "time to first Audio" and "app-start" (can be any from the android market or even one of the pre-installed ones) time? Does anyone know a source or perhaps measured those numbers?

I try to understand android boot sequence on my JB (under CM10). I found some docs and there should be specific partitions (boot, recovery, system, cache, data).
My understanding of the boot sequence is now:
A) normal boot:
1) Power ON ->
2) bootloader ->
3) boot-partition where i flashed the kernel aka boot.img ->
4a) system-partition with the OS (libs, UI, etc) where i unpacked over CWM my customROM.zip ->
4b) data-partition, where i unpacked google-apps.zip and installed all the apps ->
4c) cache-partition with user data
B) recovery boot (adb reboot recovery):
1) Power ON ->
2) bootloader ->
3) recovery-partition with CWM where i may unpack all the .zip stuff to proper partitions, or restore from sdcard, etc.
Is this correct? I wonder, because i didn't installed CWM into recovery-partition. It cames from install of CM10 (fastboot -i 0xfce flash boot boot.img), so it must be in boot-partition and not in recovery?
So, next confusion: i looked up to /proc/mtd and i don't see neither boot nor recovery partition here:
Quote:
# cat /proc/mtd
dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 19000000 00040000 "system"
mtd1: 00600000 00040000 "appslog"
mtd2: 06580000 00040000 "cache"
mtd3: 1a400000 00040000 "userdata"
I did a backup with CWM and loocked the data. There aren't boot, and recovery backups:
Quote:
# ls -lha /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2012-10-04.18.49.55/
d---rwxr-x 2 system sdcard_r 4.0K Oct 4 18:56 .
d---rwxr-x 3 system sdcard_r 4.0K Oct 4 18:49 ..
----rwxr-x 1 system sdcard_r 1.6K Oct 4 18:54 .android_secure.vfat.dup
----rwxr-x 1 system sdcard_r 54.6M Oct 4 18:55 cache.yaffs2.img
----rwxr-x 1 system sdcard_r 360.2M Oct 4 18:53 data.yaffs2.img
----rwxr-x 1 system sdcard_r 212 Oct 4 18:56 nandroid.md5
----rwxr-x 1 system sdcard_r 214.6M Oct 4 18:51 system.yaffs2.img
#
So, i think i didn't understand the boot sequence and partition schema corectly.

I am trying to do some low level performance testing related to device processor cores through adb which I feel it is affected by Android background services and system stuff.
As I know that the Android boot sequence stages are as follow:
1.Execute Boot ROM code.
2.Execute the boot loader.
3.Load the Linux kernel.
4.Launch Zygote, which initializes the Dalvik VM.
5.System server which loads the Android system.
So my question is how can I interrupt this sequence to force it stop on stage 3 to load Linux kernel. This can implement my intermediary performance testings before loading again Android system.
Does Fastboot or Clockworkmod recovery can load my device to a kind of Linux kernel?

Instead of seeing the boring old Android logo or my service provider's logo, I'd love to see the standard text-based Linux boot screen that shows the status of all the hardware and configuration info as my phone boots. My current phone is an HTC EVO 3D running Cool ICS with Sense 3.6 and Revolutionary CWM.

Is there any way to get an app to run at startup? There is a volume control app (ladybug icon) that I use to keep my ringer volume always at vibrate. When I accidentally hit the volume rocker, the app returns the ringer to vibrate. However, I must remember to run the app when I restart the Droid. So, is there anyway to have it run when the Droid powers on? Or is that something that would have to involve rooting?

I've been modifying/editing parts of the Android platform, but have run into a problem when trying to test my edits. After making my changes to the platform source, I was able to successfully compile the source - thus creating system.img, ramdisk.img, and userdata.img. When I go to test this in the emulator, the emulator just hangs on the "ANDROID_" screen, with the underscore blinking, but never seems to load. Any suggestions? The command I used to run the emulator is as follows:
./emulator -system $HOME/android/platform/out/target/product/generic/system.img -ramdisk $HOME/android/platform/out/target/product/generic/ramdisk.img -data $HOME/android/platform/out/target/product/generic/userdata.img

I have Listpreferences in my app. They don't appear to be setting to their defaults right after installation - they appear to be null. I'm trying to figure out why my default preferences are not being set right after installation.
In my main code I have:
CODE:......
Right after the above code executes, each variable contains "defValue" instead of the actual values I have assigned in my ListPreference below.
My preference xml file is called, "settings.xml". Here's what one of the ListPreferences there looks like:
CODE:.............
Here's what some of my strings.xml file looks like:
CODE:.................
When I go to menu, and then settings, I can see my defaults checked (radiobuttoned). Then when I go back from the settings menu to my main screen - all is well - for life! ...then each var above is assigned the proper default value.
This only happens when I first install my app on the phone. After I go to the settings screen once and then right out of it, the app is fine and accepts any setting changes.
By the way, as you can see, "List1" is the android:key within a file called settings.xml in my res/xml folder.

1) I have a Spinner with several options provided by an ArrayAdapter and have an onItemSelected listener on this Spinner. When selecting an item from the spinner, I want to display another view (list-view) but this method is unintentionally invoked upon initially displaying the view. The list-view is therefore displayed upon startup of the application. It is possible to add a spinner-on-item-select listener that won't fire upon initially displaying the view but only by the user selecting an item?

I have a need to create a background service that starts up during the system boot up, and keeps running until the device is powered down. There is no UI or Activity associated with this. I created a class extending the android Service class, and added the setttings to the AndroidManifest.xml file. When I launch this service in the emulator, I don't see this launched at all. I have overrided almost all the methods in the Service class to put log statements, but none of them shows up.
