Android :: Audible Beta Available
Jun 5, 2010
If you've been waiting for audible to hit android like I have, then I have some good news if you subscribe to the US audible site.Unfortunately, it only supports the american site so far, but apparently the other sites are coming soon. I'm still downloading a book atm, but from what I've seen, the app is pretty sweet.

Audible selections do not make any sounds anymore. It was working fine today; later on, however, I had suddenly noticed that whenever I touch various buttons, icons, widgets, etc. on the screen, there was no audible sound. I tried rebooting, but that did not help at all. Also tried unchecking & checking the Audible Selection box, problem still remained.

I installed the new maps app on my G1 the other day. Now my audible tap sound is maxed out. It seems like this audible tap is on an audio channel that you can't adjust with the volume settings. I've tried changing all settings in the Toggle Settings volume pane and it doesn't fix this.
This happened right after I tried out the turn by turn directions. I suspect that the turn by turn voice is using the same channel as the audible tap and it's maxing that volume out when it turns on. Fine, but it should set it back to where it was when it exits. And it really shouldn't be using a channel that the end user can't alter volume on.

I've had my brand new Droid Incredible for less than a day. It replaced a BlackBerry Curve that I had for several years and really liked. One nice feature the BB had was that it would shift from ringing mode to vibrate mode by simply slipping it into its case. Absolutely nothing had to be done to the device itself, other than configuring it to do this. Given that Android phones don't have this feature, what is the simplest and quickest way to move around among ring, vibrate, and silent modes of operation? Any way to do it with a single tap or two?

I have an application which is playing audio.I have some customers that use this application while driving and who also use the Google Maps application to get directions to the places where they are driving. They have asked me to change my application to pause my audio while the Google Maps application is giving them audio navigation instructions. I am trying to find out if I can register a Broadcast Receiver to let me know when the Google Maps application is giving audio navigation instructions, or if there is a way to detect when any other application has started or stopped playing audio. It seems that this type of functionality would be beneficial for Google Maps and for any type of application which is playing media, so I am hoping that Google Maps is broadcasting events when it starts and stops giving audio navigation instructions, or that there is a generic way to discover when overlapping audio sources are trying to play.

I fooled with the Gmail app a bit yesterday, and came to the conclusion that I only get a single audible notification for multiple e-mails, even when they are spread out over many minutes. Going in to the Gmail app and viewing new e-mails seems to be the only thing which resets things so that a new audible alert occurs. (BTW, the testing was performed by sending e-mail from a PC using a non-Gmail account.)Anyone else notice this? Clearing notifications in the notification panel doesn't seem to affect things - I was only able to trigger a new audible alert if I went into the app and opened one of the e-mails.Note that I could observe the same behavior even if the phone wasn't sleeping (e.g. powered by the USB, "never sleep" policy, and with the ddms monitor running).Seems like this should be reported as a bug - if I am purposefully ignoring my phone for whatever reason, there's no way I can tell the difference between one arriving e-mail or twenty.
Separately, I tried to answer the question, "does Gmail push?", but couldn't come to a definitive conclusion - the behavior doesn't seem to be "simple". With only WiFi turned on (even with a "never sleep" WiFi policy), I could observe rather long delays (> 20 min) between sending of e-mail and receipt of email on the handset. (I could do this without touching the handset by passively sniffing WiFi packets "off the air").
The handset does initiate a long-lived TCP connections to Google's servers, and if new mail comes in within five or ten minutes, it is apparent that it is the Google side of thing that starts talking on the idle (virtual) circuit. So, that's a kind of "push"; OTOH, it also looks like the Google servers will time out that virtual circuit (sends TCP reset) after 15-20 minutes.I don't have a way to trace things with WiFi turned off and Mobile Network on - the first thing event that seems to show up (with each new e-mail) in the ddms monitor is activity tagged with "GTalkService". This seems to happen more repeatedly - I only saw delays of 90 seconds or so when using the Mobile Network exclusively.

Is there a way to turn off the audible notification when I get a new gmail? When I first bought the eris, I would get email audible notification all the time, during sleep and work hours. Email is not important to me.I now have gmail notification disabled. So no more annoying audible notifications. But I would still like to get a notification icon without the sound. Is this possible? maybe install a 3rd party email app?

Is there a way to receive any sort of audible notification if you receive an SMS while in a call? I have found a dead thread from march with someone asking this on a G1, and they received no reply. I have a Moto Droid on Verizon, and the green light blinks if I am in a call, but there is no way to notice that with the phone stuck to my face. Does anyone know of a setting or an app to make this happen? I am sorry if this is a novice question, but this is truly driving me nuts. I have tried installing a few third party SMS apps like SMSPopup to see if they would help, but alas, nothing has worked.

Has anyone noticed problems with audible alerts not working? I can be sat in a quiet room in the middle of an email or SMS conversation and when I check the display there is visual notification of a new message but the phone hasn't made a sound.Completely maddening. If it continues I will return the phone as it is not fit for purpose.

On the Razr, are notifications (email and texts) audible in the bluetooth?
I have a Droid X and they are not. I can stream, play music, etc. and listen in my BlueAnt Q2. However, all notifications play only through the phone. This is a documented issue in the Droid X, but I can't find anything about the Razr.

Where the notes & bookmarks are stored (within the android file system) Customer service has been 0 support. They just keep saying that there's no cloud based backup system so I can't back it up.... The files are stored on my device SOMEWHERE so there has to be a way to back them up. It kills me to think that I could lose all the notes I took through the 10+ books I've bought.

It's that little "tick" sound you hear when you press an icon on the home page, or hit something on a menu, or click a link, etc. Mine is suddenly about 1/3 the volume it used to be. I checked the settings and I can turn it off in Sounds & Display...Audible Selection but I don't see any adjustment for the volume of it.
The only thing new in the past few days is that I got both the desk dock and car dock (the "quiet tick" problem is when it's not docked though).
Rebooted with no luck.

I go to the settings>wireless & networks>mobile networks and didn't find any option to turn this off. Also looked everywhere in the sounds menu and nothing - am I missing something? There is an option in my EVO but I find nothing in the Epic 4G - inside our house we get poor reception (Airave here I come!), so the Epic connects regularly to a Verizon tower and that sound is driving me crazy!

First of all, I swear I did a search, but I can't come up with an answer. I am using the Vlingo in car beta, and it actually listens to me most of the time. The only thing I can't do is get it to answer a call. I thought you could say "answer" and the call would pick up. Am I wrong? Is it because I'm still running 2.1 (Tmo Vibrant)? Does this work in 2.2? Any tips you have would be appreciated.
