I am writing an application from which I need to update and write new contacts to Contact database.
what would be the best way to do this? i have read several posts in which people have tried doing this but could not not succeed, so has anybody successfully done this?

i've been looking for an application for merging the SIM contacts with the GMail contacts but can't seem to find any. Does anyone know if such an application is available? The result now is that i have a huge list of contacts (GMail + SIM) with many duplicates and information spread around different entries. Remark: i'm not sure if this question belongs here, but i had to choose between the G1 T-mobile and this forum.

It would include using the new contact's information.Is there an easy way to do this? Is there some event that can be listened for or do I have to extend the Contacts application itself? View 7 Replies View RelatedCan you please tell me why the android Contacts application theme/style is using 'dark' theme? For example, the activity's background is Black instead of White. I have looked at their Android Manifest xml file and their layout xml file (e.g. call details.xml) file, but i don't see how they specified using a 'dark' theme? Can you please tell me how do they do that? I have looked at http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/themes.html, but I don't see Contacts app is doing that.

I have 700 phone numbers, and am a junior in college, so needless to say, sometimes it's nice to only see female phone numbers. Also, if there is one where you could sort people by key words like soccer, school, parties, etc. Also, with the Verizon network, is there anyway to send texts to more than ten people at once? Is there anything like that out there available for my droid? Is there a way to sort/edit my contacts on my computer? I feel like it would be much easier.

a) I have numerous duplicate contacts. Is there an application to delete the unwanted ones?

I want to encrypt individual contacts stored by the Contacts application on Android based on user's preference. So, I am thinking I'll have to hook/extend the Contacts application before the it stores data into the database and decrypt it when the user wants to view it. Also, I am assuming I will have to store the key for encryption in a file.

The syncing takes place in a background thread with user being able to browse through the rest of the application. I am displaying the sync status in the notification bar suing the progress bar. View 1 Replies View RelatedI attempted to import my contacts from my old HTC Touch Pro phone by using an application to export them to a .csv file, then importing them into a gmail account. That part all worked fine. However, when I linked the gmail account and synced up the contact information, there are a couple of problems. First and most important, its not bringing over all of the information. It brought over the contact name, but when you tap on the name, it only shows a gmail link and none of the other information. Second, gmail is using only the first name for the full contact. example: the contact it titled 'George' instead of the person's full name like "Butler, George'. How can I fix these two issues?

View 5 Replies View RelatedIf I get an Android phone, such as HTC Hero or Nexus One (if it comes to Sprint), is the default "Contact" app "Gmail Contacts"? That is, will it automatically sync my Gmail Contacts to the phone's internal "Contacts" database? I like the idea of pushing everything to Gmail (including all my contact info) and I'd love it if the Android phone would sync with all the contacts in Gmail. That way, I will always be backed up and never have to worry about loosing the 500 or so contacts I've built up over the years on my current Palm Treo phone. If I don't like the built-in Contact app on whatever Android phone I end up with, are there better apps for sale that will also sync with Gmail's contacts?

Is there a way to either group or create groups of them and then set one of those groups up as the contact default? I know some phonebook apps probably do this but are limited in their information. View 1 Replies View RelatedRunning KK and trying to export some contacts using the stock export function in contacts - problem is that the generated vcf is in 2.1 format. This is not good, the export lost some info, such as custom labels of phone numbers.
Then I tried to found an app on the market that does that - not ONE have i found. All of them either do the export in 2.1 format; or they backup on the cloud; or send the contacts by mail; or use proprietary format.I just want to backup my contacts with all the info on my sdcard and be able to restore them.
What's strange is that the stock import contacts knows how to read 3.0 vcards and that I was able to do this thing I'm looking so hard now on my ancient SGS1 running GB.
I seem to be having a sync issue with my Droid.When I add a contact to my phone, it doesn't sync into "My contacts" in Gmail; it'll sync into "All contacts". So, a couple of questions:
1) How can I get the phone to add new contacts created on my Droid into "My contacts" in Gmail?
2) I'm trying to understand the point of "All contacts". Why does Gmail want to keep a list of anyone that I've ever sent an email to? Otherwise, it'll be simple enough to just merge the two groups and call it a day.(Note: When I bought my Droid I did NOT have the VZW sales person transfer my contacts or any data from my old Blackberry to my Droid. I used Google Sync on my BB and synced my contacts from my BB to Gmail, then when I got the Droid, it automatically pulled my contacts from Gmail.)(FWIW, yes, I did a search and found two great threads: http://androidforums.com/support-troubleshooting/15042-how-do-i-push-droid-contacts-back-gmails-my-contacts.html and http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid/15069-contacts-dont-really-synchronize.html but I have a different situation than most of those guys and I'd actually prefer to sift through and merge a couple of contacts from "All contacts" to "My contacts" every once in a while than deal with a backup and factory reset.)
I'm pretty sure it's not viable to do what I'd like to based on some initial research, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask the community of experts here in case someone knows a way.
I'd like to create a custom field for contacts that the user is able to edit from the main Contacts app; however, the user should only be allowed to select from a list of four specific values. A short list of string values would be ideal, but an int with a min/max range would suffice.
I'm interested in knowing if it's possible either way, but also wondering if it make sense to go this route performance wise. More specifically, would it be better to look up a contact (based on a phone number) each time a call or SMS message is received or better to store my own set of data (consisting of name, numbers, and the custom field) and just syncing contact info in a thread every so often? Or syncing contacts the first time the app is run and then registering for changes using ContentObserver?

when the same field exists in two or more contacts. Say they have two different last names or emails in different accounts. Does the contacts app show both fields with an account indicator?

I'm about the take the Android (EVO specifically) plunge. I'm coming from an old Palm phone. Wow, talk about a quantum leap. Anyway, to prepare for the move, how do I get my Palm contacts into Gmail's contacts? Is that how it works? I need to move my Palm contacts to Gmail contacts, right? Then when I get my new EVO, it will sync with Gmail and my contacts will be in the new phone?

What is the efficient way to quickly lookup my local phone contacts database and "match" them based on their name. Since there are firstname, lastname and displayname this can vary.
What do you think, how can the best match be achieved?
Also how do I make sure I don't parse for each JSON item the whole database I want to avoide having JSON_COUNT x MOBILE COUNT steps
