Android :: Custom Contacts Field With A Set List Of Values And Contacts Lookup Performance
May 28, 2010
I'm pretty sure it's not viable to do what I'd like to based on some initial research, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask the community of experts here in case someone knows a way.
I'd like to create a custom field for contacts that the user is able to edit from the main Contacts app; however, the user should only be allowed to select from a list of four specific values. A short list of string values would be ideal, but an int with a min/max range would suffice.
I'm interested in knowing if it's possible either way, but also wondering if it make sense to go this route performance wise. More specifically, would it be better to look up a contact (based on a phone number) each time a call or SMS message is received or better to store my own set of data (consisting of name, numbers, and the custom field) and just syncing contact info in a thread every so often? Or syncing contacts the first time the app is run and then registering for changes using ContentObserver?

Ive read through the docs and searched on here, but I'm not quite understanding how all the pieces fit together. Was wondering if anyone has a clear explanation of how to grab a single column of data from Contacts and have it populate an autocomplete box.

I am using android 2.0.1. I have a group id and I am trying to find all contacts in this group. I have been banging my head against the wall on this for a while. I can't seem to find a contentprovider that ties these two together.There has to be a standard answer to this question?

I'm currently writing a application that allows to save drafts (using android version >= 2.0). Each draft is connected to a contact via the ContactsContract.Contacts.LOOKUP_KEY. My problem is that if I change the name of my contact the lookup key changes also. Is that the way this works?
So for what do I need a lookup key? I thought that the lookup key does never change and now it changes anyway. I'm confused about that behavior. Can someone explain to me how to link permanently to a contact? Should I use IDs instead of the lookup key?

Nnow that I've ventured away from the sense UI and rooted/CM6'd my Hero, I'm finding it hard to find contacts easily. In sense, you could start searching for contacts from the phone's dialpad using the T9 system - but that system doesn't exist here. Yes, I have some starred contacts - and the phone log "helps". But I can't star everyone (defeats the purpose) and going back through the phone log can be more trouble than just going into contacts and searching.

My application wants a functionality of picking a contact from the phone contact, I have achieved this using the following intent Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PICK, People.CONTENT_URI); startActivity ForResult(intent, 001); I wanted few more functionalities
- An option to create a new contact from the pick list, similar to the one which is available in inbuilt Launcher appliation
- Set of contacts should be filtered from display i.e already selected contacts should not be displayed
- Filtering of contacts should be based on the phone number i.e a contact might have two phone numbers associated with and wants to filter out the phone number which is selected I guess above can be achieved by implementing my own pick list using contacts provider, is there any other way without implementing the new pick list

Is someArray[index] a faster way to get to a value than someObject.field?
E.g.: if(intArray[i] == 42) {//do stuff}
VS
if(someObject.x == 42) {//do stuff}
I will try to test it soon and post the results; just wondering if you all had any thoughts.

Ok, so this is my first time with Android. When I first set the phone up with Facebook, it pulled EVERY friend I have and puts them in my phones contacts. After searching, I found that I can unsync them in my 'all' contacts list etc, but they are still showing up when I push 'PHONE' at the bottom of the home screen. They are behind the dialer. Is there anyway to set that screen to show recently dialed numbers or favorites or something?

I am really trying to figure this out. So I go into Messaging and I'd like to type in the "to" field a contacts name, like facebook does it and it starts to list matches and then you just pick the one you want. Like it searches your contacts, but I can't figure out how to do this. Like I can only type in a number but I don't have anyones number memorized that's the point of having a saved phone book so am I missing something here?

at the bottom you see a "Add relationship" field. If you click Add relationship, you are presented with a list of relationships. In here I selected Father. There is then an input box next to it.
What are you supposed to put in there? I've already told Google this contact is my Father, even if I put his real name in as the contact details, it still gives me that option.
At first I thought perhaps it was for Google Now. For instance, my girlfriend is down as her full name, so when I say "Call my Girlfriend" it would call her. However it seems like that isn't the case.

I have just received my HTC Desire, last week. It's my first Android toy.
I've noticed than when synching with Outlook Contacts on the PC, some fields are not copied to the phone, for example the 'car' field, which is an additional phone number field.
Other than this, My previous phone was a BB Storm2. At the moment, My opinion is that, THe HTC desire is faster than the bb, its browser much better, but for day to day 'real world' use, the bb is much much better. More reliable, and although less options, but gives you those that you realy need.

I have encountered a problem with focused text fields in a WebView not showing entered text values.As long as a WebView text field has focus it will not show text or even the blinking cursor.You can select and highlight the text or unfocus the field to see it, but when it gains focus it will not show the text as if the foreground color of the text is white.The simplest code to demonstrate this is below.With the setTheme using a Light background, try typing values into the Email text field to notice that the text is not visible when the field is focused.

I seem to be having a sync issue with my Droid.When I add a contact to my phone, it doesn't sync into "My contacts" in Gmail; it'll sync into "All contacts". So, a couple of questions:
1) How can I get the phone to add new contacts created on my Droid into "My contacts" in Gmail?
2) I'm trying to understand the point of "All contacts". Why does Gmail want to keep a list of anyone that I've ever sent an email to? Otherwise, it'll be simple enough to just merge the two groups and call it a day.(Note: When I bought my Droid I did NOT have the VZW sales person transfer my contacts or any data from my old Blackberry to my Droid. I used Google Sync on my BB and synced my contacts from my BB to Gmail, then when I got the Droid, it automatically pulled my contacts from Gmail.)(FWIW, yes, I did a search and found two great threads: http://androidforums.com/support-troubleshooting/15042-how-do-i-push-droid-contacts-back-gmails-my-contacts.html and http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid/15069-contacts-dont-really-synchronize.html but I have a different situation than most of those guys and I'd actually prefer to sift through and merge a couple of contacts from "All contacts" to "My contacts" every once in a while than deal with a backup and factory reset.)

This is simple enough on every other version of Android, including SenseUI 1.5.
//For Contacts
Intent pickIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PICK, People.CONTENT_URI);
this.startActivityForResult(pickIntent, RESULT);
//For Phones
Intent pickIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PICK, Phones.CONTENT_URI);
this.startActivityForResult(pickIntent, RESULT);
On SenseUI 2.1 (HTC Incredible) this shows a list of numbers (the URI number). So you get a list of 1-200 if you have 200 contacts. Selecting one of the contacts you can then gather all of the information needed. Is there any good work around known?

My HTC Hero lists my contacts alphabetically by first name. Short of inputting them last name first, can they be listed first name first and still come alphabetized by last name? i.e. Bill Smith before Ken Sorels and still be in a group with other people with "S" last names? Is this a procedure problem or is their an app for this?

So I've searched "Contacts list iphone" and what not but wasn't able to find anything. And I might get crucified for this but The one thing that the iphone did that I really liked was how you can easily scroll down to the contact you want by tapping the letter you want to scroll down to on the right hand side of the contact list. I have a Droid X and I LOATHE the way it works (I have to scroll first, then move the scrollbug down to where I want it). Is there an app that will show the contact list a la iOS where you have the letters on the righthand side and you just tap on the letter you want to scroll down to?

NOTE: Must work on Android 1.5 - Contacts Contract does not Simple enough question. I need to know the best way to get the same list of contacts that show up when a user presses the Contacts button. You would think something like this would work: //For Contacts Intent pickIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PICK, People.CONTENT_URI); this.startActivity ForResult(pickIntent, RESULT); //For Phones Intent pickIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION _PICK, Phones.CONTENT_URI); this.startActivityForResult(pickIntent, RESULT); The problem is that does not include secondary google accounts or Exchange contacts. By secondary accounts, in Android you can add additional gmail accounts to have the mail/contacts synced. The above intent will not list those additional contacts. I am also told that on the HTC Desire you can add contacts to the phone that do not get synced up to Google. These contacts also do not show up. So how do I get a real list of contacts so I can create my own list activity that works properly where the Google intent does not. NOTE: Must work on Android 1.5 - Contacts Contract does not

I'm writing an Android application that allows a user to maintain a list of products. In the EnterProductData activity, the user can enter information about the product into form fields, which will then save the info to a SQLite DB. The EnterProductData activity also allows the user to initiate a barcode scan via the Barcode Scanner app in order to capture the UPC code. The problem I'm facing is trying to set the value of the UPC text field in onActivityResult() once the barcode scan activity is complete and returns the value.
What is ending up happening is my onResume() method is calling a function (populateFields()) that sets the values of the text fields to whatever is currently saved in the DB. And this seems to be happening after onActivityResult() is called. This means the scanned UPC is set as the text field value, only for an empty value to be set to it immediately after. The line of code to blame is commented with asterisks next to it. I imagine that if I immediately save the scanned UPC to the DB in the onActivityResult() method, I can avoid this problem, but that doesn't seem to be the best practice, in my opinion. Can someone advise me on what I should do?
EnterProductData.java
public class EnterProductData extends Activity {
private Button mScanButton;
private EditText mUPC;
private Button mSaveButton;
private Long mRowId;
private DbAdapter mDbHelper;
@Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
mDbHelper = new DbAdapter(this);
mDbHelper.open();
setContentView(R.layout.enter_product_data);
mUPC = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.UPC);
mScanButton = (Button) findViewById(R.id.scanButton);
mSaveButton = (Button) findViewById(R.id.saveButton);
mRowId = (savedInstanceState == null) ? null :
(Long) savedInstanceState.getSerializable(DbAdapter.KEY_PRODUCT_ROWID);
if (mRowId == null) {
Bundle extras = getIntent().getExtras();
mRowId = extras != null ? extras.getLong(DbAdapter.KEY_PRODUCT_ROWID): null;}
populateFields();
mScanButton.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
public void onClick(View view) {
IntentIntegrator.initiateScan(EnterProductData.this);}});
mSaveButton.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
public void onClick(View view) {
setResult(RESULT_OK);
finish();}});
}private void populateFields() {
if (mRowId != null) {
Cursor product = mDbHelper.fetchProduct(mRowId);
startManagingCursor(product);
mUPC.setText(product.getString(
product.getColumnIndexOrThrow(DbAdapter.KEY_UPC))); //******}
}@Override
protected void onSaveInstanceState(Bundle outState) {
super.onSaveInstanceState(outState);
saveState();
outState.putSerializable(DbAdapter.KEY_PRODUCT_ROWID, mRowId);
}@Override
protected void onPause() {
super.onPause();
saveState();
}@Override
protected void onResume() {
super.onResume();
populateFields();
}private void saveState() {String upc= mUPC.getText().toString();
if (mRowId == null) {
long id = mDbHelper.createProduct(mRowId, UPC);
if (id > 0) mRowId = id;
}} else {mDbHelper.updateProduct(mRowId, UPC);
}}protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) {
switch(requestCode) {
case IntentIntegrator.REQUEST_CODE: {
if (resultCode != RESULT_CANCELED) {
IntentResult scanResult = IntentIntegrator.parseActivityResult(requestCode, resultCode, data);
if (scanResult != null) {

Anyone here using HTC Desire's Mail app to connect to Exchange 2003 server?
Everything's working great except I can't get GAL Lookup (Global Address List) to work. Mail's downloading just fine, Calendar sync's great and Contact sync's good.. but that critical moment when you want to shoot off an urgent note to an office colleague & can't remember his email handle... bummer! Stuck!
Strangely, in NexusOne when I had to rely on Touchdown by Nitrodesk, the Address Lookup worked just fine...
HTC bug perhaps? Of all the issues, I think this is Desire's biggest.

I tried to assign custom ringtones for few people. I did go to People -> click contact name that I want to change -> under Information tap, click Ringtone -> change ringtone. But, it doesn't work. I have two cell phones so I did try. I thought that ringtone that I made was wrong, but I go to Setting -> Personalize -> change default ringtone for same MP3 file. it works! However, I couldn't make it for specific contact. Is there any thing that I did it wrong or should I turn on or off something?
