Android :: 3G Watchdog Shows Data Won't Stop
Jun 10, 2010
My housemate and I both installed 3G Watchdog the other day (Desire and an X10, noth on different networks) and in both cases it shows small amounts of 3G data being used even when the WiFi connection is up and running. I have been at home all day, in good connection with the wireless, but it shows about 3 meg of data traffic. Could 3G Watchdog be misreading somewhere or is the an app or 2 that wont use WAN?

Is anyone who is using 3G Watchdog or NetCounter actually receiving accurate stats compared to what Orange are showing on their OrangeWorld "Your Account" section?
I have been using my new HTC Hero for just over 2 weeks now and Orange are saying that I have used 422MB of data. This seems ridiculous to me as I only automatically check email once per hour, surf to the extent of anyone with such a new gadget, and spend every evening at home connected to WiFi from about 6pm onwards.
I phoned Orange one day last week and they advised that I had used 310MB up to that point, so I immediately downloaded 3G Watchdog and started it running. Since then, it says that I have used 36MB in the same period that Orange say I have used 112MB.
I also use NetCounter, but as I didn't reset it last week, I can't make any specific comparisons. However, on a daily basis it always agrees with 3G Watchdog to within a few KB.
I know I will need to phone Orange to sort this out, and I am certain that they will tell me that downloaded data counter apps cannot be trusted. I'm not sure how I can prove to them that their data readings for me are wrong.

I'm using Android 2.2 on my HTC Desire.I noticed that when I have 3G Watchdog installed and running, I cannot connect to mobile network (3G/Edge) when I turn on Wi-fi Hotspot.But everything works fine if I uninstall 3G Watchdog. Anyone else have the same problem?Any good alternatives out there to 3G Watchdog?

I'm writing an application where real-time knowledge of the GPS state is critical to convey to the user. I request GPS updates at 1000 ms intervals -- when I haven't received another update 1500 ms past the most recent update, I want to display a yellow icon, and 5000 ms after the most recent update I want to display a red icon. Currently, I'm doing it like this: private CountDownTimer gpstimeout; public void onLocationChanged(Location location) { if (gpstimeout != null) gpstimeout.cancel(); gpstimeout = new CountDownTimer(5000, 1500) { public void onTick(long m) { setYellow(); } public void onFinish() { setRed(); } }; gpstimeout.start(); }

I just signed up for these forums because soon I will be an HTC Desire owner in Canada. Having never owned a smartphone before I do have a few questions. The plan I intend on signing up for is the Telus Student 40 and that will come with only 100mb of data. Now I don't see myself being too data using heavy so I feel like I will be able to live with it. However I do have some questions regarding my data consumption.
1. Is it possible to completely stop all data usage by somehow disabling the data connection if I find myself reaching my limit?
2. What are ways to track my data usage to make sure I don't use too much data?
3. What are good ways to conserve data usage? I'm getting the feeling that there are some applications that will constantly be sending data back and forth updating themselves, is it possible to have these applications but stop them from constantly updating and only have them update when I want to access the application?.........

I'm the developer of 3G Watchdog, an application that monitors 3G traffic. I need help from Motorola Droid owners to port it to that phone.The app gets the network statistics data by reading pseudo-files /sys/ class/net/xxxx/statistics/rx_bytes and tx_bytes. "xxx" is the network interface name, which depends on the platform (or rather, the maker), e.g. for HTC phones it is "rmnet0", "pdp0" for Samsung..I'm looking for the name used by the Droid. If someone with a Droid could look (using adb) at / sys/ class/ net/ xxxx/ statistics/ rx_bytes and tell me what the xxxx is, it would make 3G Watchdog accessible to Motorola users.BTW, this remark is valid for any other future phone (Ericson, etc). New Android phones will appear on the market, and I need owner's contribution to port 3GW on them.

I have netcounter installed on my phone so that I can watch my data transfer. I enjoy seeing how much I transfer and on average I transfer 150 to 200 megs. The last two days, I have done very little on my phone. To my surprise I open upt netcounter to see that i did over 205 megs yesterday and so far today I am at 175 megs. When I look to see where the data is coming from..it shows it is almost all Upload data. The graph shows that it started yesterday. My worry is that there is some kinda virus on here or something. I can not imagine what would be non stop uploading. How can I find out what is currently using my data.

Am I right in saying that all i need to do is select data etwork mode in the power button menu? Is that all I need to do? Also I will be using wifi, if I have the data off will data still work with wifi?

I was wondering if there's a way to stop mobile data being turned on when wifi is turned off? I usually have mobile data turned off (using Extended Controls widget) to conserve battery and I use wifi most of the time, so it's very annoying that mobile data comes on every single time I turn wifi off.

So im running the froyo rom and meat kernel and have been for a couple weeks. Within the past couple of days i have been suffering from thje random restart problem at least once a day. Anybody know what the cause of it is and how to stop it? Same with the data lock up? what gives? I dont recall either of those 2 things happening with the stock os but the airplane mode problem did. Also my wifi tether absolutely does not work and nobody has been able to tell me why yet lol. That was one of the main reasons i rooted and flashed. I dont really wanna go back to stock because my battery life is better. What gives here with these 3 problems?

I don't know what I did, but it seems that my data synch is on non-stop. Maybe I never noticed before but in the notification bar, I see the recycle arrow icon just to the left of 3G and I can't seem to turn it off and my battery is running out faster than normal and the phone is very hot. I have used the Power Widget to power cycle (turn on/off) the data sync to no avail...

So this thing just started within the past week. My phone's stock gmail app will show new emails so I look at them and then they are all read, showing 0 new.But when I login to the web browser version, 5 minutes or even later(up to hours later), the web browser gmail is not updating to show that I already read the emails.I'm on JH2. So maybe it is a bug with the firmware?Or maybe a setting got changed but I'm not seeing how to handle the issue.

I'm making an Android Java app game (although this question applies to all languages really) and hope to release the first version soon. I'm nervous about how I save data in my game. My problem is that, if in a later update, I decide to store more data or store the same data in a different way, I need to be careful I don't lose or corrupt data for users that upgrade (i.e. I want users to be able to use data created by an old version in the new version, like their high scores from before).For example, say I want to save high scores in version 1.

Okay when user presses log out button what's supposed to happen is:
Code:
stopService(myIntent);
unbindService(mConnection);
mIsBound = false;
I need to shut down the service on background.Except the service restarts itself over and over again! Even if I kill the program from task manager the service restarts itself. Other programs aren't using the service. when I uninstalled the program the foreground program information popped up indicating it was STILL there(albeit this I solved by rebooting phone).
When user says he's finished with the program 'least he can expect is for the program to stay down rather than keep eating battery by acquiring GPS signal and sending them to server. The program is not intended to be "once you log in you need to Uninstall me and reboot phone to get rid of me!" type of program!

When I purchased my Droid, the Verizon sales rep told me about an app that would show where you have been...i.e. like if you parked your car in a large parking lot, then you could mark that location with this program and it would show you how to get back to that spot. I thought he said it was called 'Footprint', but I do not see a program like that. Do anyone know of an app that does this?

Im the happy owner of a HTC Desire with android 2.1 and until lately it has been a pleasure. A few hours ago the GPs symbol in the status bar popped up and its been there since. Usually the icon disappears after I close the app which uses it but this time it just seem to have come out of nowhere (didnt use any app at the time) and it doesn't go away. It is animating so it seems like the GPS is really being used. Since I don't know which apps are using it I can't just turn it off either. Is there an app on the market which displays what programs are currently using GPS, wireless and so on?

I have a very simple app. I have simplified for sake of discussion, but I think this is a good representation.
My issue is that when I exit the app, the GPS continues receive updates. As far as I can tell the app never stops running, it just no longer displays the map activity.
I have to be missing something important.

I live in Europe and I hate that Samsung and Verizon have on-demand TV services and I don't! I have a HTC Hero and I was wondering if there are any on-demand TV &/or Film services to download? Please, I love watching movies and shows on planes or while commuting, even if there was an online APK for the Samsung service.

I have found this erroneous behaviour on my phone, please let me know if you have any idea how to resolve it. However, when I open this intent, the gps on the device starts and google maps first displays my location instead of the location in the URI. This happens only the first time you open google maps. If I go back to my app and make the same selection, then the correct position on the map appears.I tried using something like this: geo:0,0?q=*business+near+city, however this doesnt centers the map on a position, but in the nearest address.
