Android :: Where Can I Find Information About 2.x Icon Design Guidelines?

Feb 10, 2010

Assuming that old Icon design guidelines are not valid anymore, where can we find information about the guidelines to follow to design "new-styled" 2.X launcher icons?Should applications provide icons for both icon styles if they work for both versions?

Android :: UI Design Guidelines For Android Tablets

Are there any UI design guidelines for the upcoming Android tablets? Looks like the Archos 7 will be available sometime this month. My question is not about supporting the screen size but more about providing a more appealing UI interface for a bigger screen device.

Android :: Using 3d Packages For Icon Design

Nov 3, 2010

if this is a silly question, am sorry about that. I was wondering if its possible to design android icons using a 3d modelling package like blender? i know i have to stick to the guidelines documented already, but was just wondering if anyone had come across or done something similar? Its that little part of the icons(launchers) being able to have a slight perspective and looking through the requirements to design icons it seems i might be a lot faster using a 3d modelling package and then following part of the icons template guide(based from my requirement though!).

Android :: Retrieve Device Information On Droid / Where To Find It?

Feb 4, 2010

My program is targeting Android 1.5. I would like to retrieve system information about the device itself. I have found very few helpful classes by searching the APIs. the best I've found so far is the Runtime class and a few Build.* system properties.

I would like to be able to get information like the total amount of memory on the device, the amount of free memory (which I do not know if the Runtime class is actually giving me, since it specifically refers to memory available to the JVM) along with information about the processor.

Is this information available, and if so, where can I find it?

Android :: Private Fields Naming Guidelines

Jan 25, 2010

Here http://source.android.com/submit-patches/code-style-guide#shortmethods it is stated that :

"Field Names
* Non-public, non-static field names start with m.
* Static field names start with s.
* Other fields start with a lower case letter.
* Public static final fields (constants) are ALL_CAPS_WITH_UNDERSCORES.

also states that : "The rules below are not guidelines or recommendations, but strict rules. You may not disregard the rules we list below except as approved on a need-to-use basis." I don't like the "m" convention before private or package fields in a class... I really find this uninspired. I mean, if we try to apply good designs, the low coupling of the classes implies having few public fields. actually, in my programs I usually have no public fields, even when I need some I use getters and seters. so, why should I be forced to have almost all my fields in the program with an "m" in front of them? wouldn't be easier to have the few public fields, if there are any, with some "g" in front or something? or just use setters and geters as beans suggest? this really makes my code harder to read. also, following these guidelines, local temp variables used in the methods have no restriction so they could easily be mistaken for public global fields (also without restriction). this also I find to be wrong, as it is a probable source of mistakes. I understand to have a way of differentiating from fields, but private/protected member fields are the most used in an application, they shouldn't be less "readable". what do you think? should I follow the guidelines?

Android :: Suggestions For Phone Project Guidelines

May 19, 2010

Im trying to prepare a set of guidelines and project template for my future Android projects. Im already implementing the basic MVC architecture modularity. Im trying to have add more advanced level of design to my Android projects to make my development easier and maintainable. For example can someone suggest me a way to make Intent calls to Activity without explicitly mentioning the class while creating the Intent. Im trying to loose couple the intent calls and hopefully use AndroidManifest to assign action to an activity which then can be called globally within the application.Any other type of suggestions are welcome. Also please suggest any kind of coding conventions that you might be using yourself.

Android :: Good Guidelines For Developing Ecommerce Application

Jun 9, 2010

I'm making an ecommerce application on Android and, as it is my first serious project, I'm trying to figure out beforehand the best approach to do this. The application talks to a web service (magento api, meaning soap or xml rpc unfortunately) and gets all the content on the phone (product categories, product details, user credentials etc.). I think it should do lazy loading or something like that.

So, I was thinking to keep the user credentials in a custom Object which will be kept in a SharedPreferences so that every Activity cand easily access it. I'll use a couple of ListViews to show the content and AsyncTask to fetch the data needed. Should I keep all the data in memory in objects or should I use some sort of cache or a local database? Also, I'm planning to use a HashMap with SoftReferences to hold the bitmaps I am downloading. But wouldn't this eat a lot of memory? How cand all the activities have access to all these objects (ecommerce basket etc.)? I'm thinking of passing them using Intents but this doesn't seem right to me. Can SharedPreferences be used for a lot of objects and are there any concurrency issues?

Any pointers would be really appreciated. What are some good guidelines? What classes should I look into? Do you know of any resources on the Internet for me to check out?

Android :: Sync Information And Future Information

Jul 7, 2010

I am a Mac user (photographer/ videographer). I also rely heavily on my iPod Touch when mobile (i can often find a wifi signal when i am out and about). I use iCal on the Touch and iCal on my Mac as well as the address book on both everyday and as a Mobile Me user, my two devices sync so everything is mirrored and up to date. I also HATE AT&T for their terrible signal strength and coverage and have been a loyal Verizon customer for many years and this is why I don't have an iPhone. Okay, all that being said, is there an easy way to still use everything I love and rely on with my Mac (the calender and address book, mainly) and easily sync all of my existing information and future info to an Android based device? How easy is it to use an Android device with a Mac? I don't want to have to manually re-enter my entire address book into a new device.

HTC Droid Eris : Can't Find A Duplication Of Icon In Notification Area

Apr 17, 2010

I hate posting a query about something so seemingly simple. I googled around and can't find a duplication of the icon in the notification area of my new (since January) Eris running 1.5 stock.

I'll describe it: it in most ways resembles a little musical note, perhaps an eighth-note, but with a diagonal slash through it (not in a circle as the "no" sign).

Nothing running in the background, music-wise. On page 47 of the user guide/manual is a list of all stock icons; it is not there. No new apps have been installed for weeks.Any ideas as to what it could be?

Android :: Looking For A Design Tip / Advice / Doc

Aug 2, 2010

I'm kind of new to android development.I have read from many sources that findViewById() is a "costly" operation. I'm making an application that deals with 5 TextViews to provide different kinds of information (distance, duration, title, description, etc) from a database. I'm using listeners to catch touch/click events and feedbacks a handler. The main function of the handler is to received a "position" in the Cursor where the new information needs to be displayed. I mentioned earlier that findViewById() is a "costly" operation. So, I don't call this method in the handler. Doing so, it will retrieve every time the Views when user touchs/clicks some widget. Is it right to populate the Activity with private members of the Views/Layout it displays? I mean, I don't like it. I don't know why, but seems that I'm populating too much the activity. I'm aware of the android:onClick xml attribute, but in my case I also use long click listeners. So, a piece of onCreate() looks like: And all of those are private members, wihout mention the "cursor.getColumnIndex()" for each. I thought on implementing Handler.Callback and set on the Hanlder.Callback constructor implementer a View array or a View list or something, but I also need this objects later to set other listeners and setups. Is this right? I cannot think another way, as I need the reference to the object, and also the Cursor reference that the handler will move to the "position" provided and update the correspondent View. I will really appreciate either an advice or a useful link/info/doc to read in what concern in this kind of designs. What I do not like is that It looks like imperative programming filling the Activity with "global" variables.

Android :: APN Design - Access Pointer - MMS

May 13, 2009

in Android code, It is a very strange concept to define the APN type (APN_TYPE_MMS). The reason are: 1) APN only is an access pointer, it haven't any special attribute for MMS or other things. 2) Only Application care the APN name, since different APN will provide different service from operator. for example, operation may provide Email/MMS/GPS/.... service on different APN. 3) Android only define one type APN_TYPE_MMS, this will limit other top application usage. Any one can answer me why Android design this way? If google have strong reason for such design, I hope add other user defined type like APN_TYPE_USER1 APN_TYPE_USER2 then top application can set his property to use its APN other than APN_TYPE_MMS

Android :: How To Design A Floating Keyboard

Oct 13, 2010

I am a developer and recently completed the implementation of my keyboard MessagEase. It's available on the Market (with its very- different features, making it quite unlike QWERTY).

This keyboard works fine as a replacement of the standard keyboard on an Android Phone. But for a An Android Tablet, it would work best if it's implemented as a floating, movable keyboard.

(the footprint of this keyboard is mostly dependable on the size of a human's finger; it remains the same even if the tablet's display is much larger than a phone's. Therefore it'll take a relatively smaller area on a tablet.)

If I use the current SDK hooks, it will have to take a significant portion of the screen, defeating the purpose.
