Android :: Android - Can't Find Launcher Icon In Menu When Exit Application
Oct 31, 2010
I use a file browser to locate the APK, it installs successful and I can run it OK (when clicking "run" after install completes) However, if I then exit the application, I'm unable to see a launcher for it on my apps menu (where I would expect it, like other apps I've created) At the moment, every time I want to run the app, I first have to re-install it so I can access it, surely there must be a better way?

should an Android application have an exit button (or menu function) or not? Ok, if there's some service or other resources consuming something running in the background I think the user should have an option to make it stop. But what about an application that would just sit there, inactive? If I take a look at the standard application it seems that the Android philosophy is to keep the applications running and let the system decide when to stop and destroy an application idling in the background. I didn't recognize "exit" or "quit" options in the standard programs. On the other hand - why not let the user decide and give the option to quit some software if he knows it's currently not used. So, what's the advice here? Give even a "passive" application an exit button? Or not and just leave it to the system?

can an application have more than one icon in the launcher? (No, not plotting any mischief). Was wondering how to do it if the application has only one activity.

I want to hide my application icon from main menu at the run time. I believe that a filter with category Launcher in the application's manifest file is responsible for the application's presence in the main menu. Is there any way to change the category at run time? or any other way to hide the icon from main menu?

Just wanted to report a potential issue with the Sprint HTC Hero. Me and a few friends have experienced an issue where if you:
1) install an application
2) update it or uninstall and reinstall
3) reboot your phone
Then on many applications, the launcher icon will be messed up as well as the name of the application under the icon. In many of these cases, this renders the application unusable including Google Sky and Pandora. If you then uninstall these applications and reinstall them they will work fine until you reboot your phone again. The problem doesn't seem to exist if you install the application the first time. Only does it exist if you update it and reboot or if you uninstall/reinstall and reboot. There is a fairly lengthy thread on the Android Developers mailing list regarding this. Google seems to think it is unique to the Hero itself since a stock Android device (ie: G1) doesn't have this problem. Other developers are experiencing the same thing.

Just got a Galaxy Skyrocket (jumped ship from iPhone 4) and switched the launcher to Go Launcher EX. However, I noticed that I can't exit/quit some of the apps by choosing the "close" option for the running app. In Go Launcher, you can get a list of (background) running apps and if you tap the icon of an app, you get a pop-up with options "close", "lock', "goto", and "info". I would think by choosing "close', it would "exit" or "quit" the app, and clear the memory footprint. However, for some apps, like Facebook, Tweeter (actually TweetCaster), etc.--they will disappear for a while and come back again. So the "close" action does not really "kill" the app.
How can I really kill the app? I don't want Tweeter to be constantly running in the background and pulling down hundreds of tweets.
Also how can I stop some apps, e.g. Facebook, from pre-loading? I don't want these apps running in the background eating up the resources when I don't need them. There must be a way, Just haven't figure it out yet.

I notice that my application continues to run in the background after I hit the home or back button. I tried calling the finish() method and it still says its running. On another note, how do I setup the keyListener to respond to the user hitting the back or home button. I tried implementing OnKeyListener and using findViewById(R.Layout.main).setOnKeyListener(this) to call finish().

I have requirement that needs to save data to a file. During multiple Activitiy screens, I add different data to a list and finally when user is not using the app (means if user exits app by pressing "home" button or "call" button), just before exiting that app, i want to save that data of the list to a file.
coding before exiting activity screen is simple - by calling onDestory () method, but here I want not one activity but the application exit.
So my question is How do I write a code that will be executed just before application exits ? I tried created one class extends Application, and then I override onTerminate() method, but it's not get called when I exit ( pressing home button on device)

the problem is that this button doesn't exit of my app... it simply closes the current intent ant returns to the previous intent (window) of my app.... how i can do a real exit/close button? i tryed with this:
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_MAIN);
intent.addCategory(Intent.CATEGORY_HOME);
intent.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK);
startActivity(intent);
but it doesn't works, because when i turn back into my app, the app comes in the last opened window, and not in the first window of the app, how i can do that? i need that when i re-open my app it starts on the first window of my app

Is it possible to stop all started services when the user hits the Home Button? I use:
startService(new Intent(ClassName.this, ClassName2.class));
stopService(new Intent(ClassName.this, ClassName2.class));
This means I will have to somehow add the 'stopService()' for 7+ of my app classes
I've researched this topic and I think there's 'onTerminate' but still not sure how this should be implemented.

Let's suppose I want to install an app that doesn't have a launcher icon. Maybe it contains content providers, or maybe it is a license key app that just needs to be present.What is the proper way to do that? If I don't have an <application> tag at all, that works, but I don't think that is the proper way, since <provider> and <receiver> are also inside <application>.But the user experience is *unacceptable*. Instead of being removed, the icon sticks around and says 'Application not installed' until they reboot their phone, or, more likely, go for the refund.

In my current application design, I have an activity class application.java (which starts on launching the application), and it does not have a layout(UI screen). I call another class called servicebind.java from the onCreate method of my 1st class. here I bind to the local server (bindServer()). i call back the application class through an intent. Once I am back to my application class, I call my activity class called welcome.java which has a layout/UI. When I run this application, I am able to see the welcome screen. But the problem is, when I click on the back button, I get a black screen with just the title on top. I have to hit back button 3 times to exit the application.
The reason I see from the logs is that, the 1st 2 activity classes (application.java and services.java) does not get destroyed unless I hit the back button. So the 1st time I hit back button, the welcome activity gets destroyed. the next back button destroys the servicebind class and final back destroys the application class. Is the reason because these classes dont have a UI to display in the onCreate method. I do not want to change my design where I bind the service in the servicebind class and call the welcome activity in the application class.

I would like to write a widget that emulates the look of an application launcher shortcut. In particular I want the white font label on a black, semi-transparent background. As it should look the same as the launcher shortcut I wouldn't like too much to imitate the actual look, but to re-use/copy it. Any idea where I can get that?I checked the launcher app and found application-boxed.xml, but it doesn't seem to do what I want and I am probably way off anyway.

I have a problem with the launcher icon when I update my application from 1.0 to 1.1. I have the right launcher icon in 1.0 but not in 1.1 just after an update. But, if I reboot my devices, it's ok.In the manifest, I just increase the android:versionCode and android:versionName but didn't change anything about my android:icon. But, I have new image in the folder drawable in 1.1.

Is it possible to update the launcher icon dynamically?Currently it seems that it can only be set statically at build time using the android:icon attribute in the AndroidManifest.xml file. For example, to display a unique icon based on the device's location?Is this something that can be achieved using aliases? If so, can an alias's launcher icon be enabled/disabled dynamically?

I have an application built for 1.5 and I am adding higher resolution drawables to support hdpi devices in 1.6 and above.My original application icon is 48x48. I created a second launcher icon that is 72x72 and placed it in a res/drawable-hdpi/ directory.When I install the application on my Nexus One the icon looks good when I view it in the application menu.But when I place it on the desktop it appears small relative to other icons, my guess is I'm seeing the 48x48 version with no scaling.Do I need to do something differently either with my directory structure or my manifest file to get things to display correctly?

All Do anybody know how to make the STK icon available in main menu. Now, I can't see the STK icon in main menu, even though the RIL has sent the message "RIL_UNSOL_STK_PROACTIVE_COMMAND" about SET UP MENU to upper App layer. And RIL also receive correct terminal response (RIL_ REQUEST _STK_SEND_TERMINAL_RESPONSE) from upper App layer.
