I am developing an application which incorporates socket programming. I need to refer to the socket object created in the starting application when connected to a server in any other activity in that application .
Can I define a class in an acitivity and define a socket as a static field in that class and refer to that socket object from any other activity in that application?

i want to display a msg to the user (msg box or Toast) when exception happend in a static SQLite Database class that i use. the problem is that i cant call a non static method in a static class , how can i handle this. this is the class

So Im writing an application to communicate to a Wi-Fi enabled Arduino board with a static IP...
This is what Im trying to do...
1.) Enter Ip and Host
2.) Connect
3.) Simply send either a "0" or "1" to the arduino board
There are two activities at the moment, one to enter the IP and port of the Board (which is set from the board itself) and one to send data to the board. When i comment out the connection methods in the Communicator class the app swithches activities without any issues, but when i un-comment them and attempt to connect, the app immediately closes after i attempt to connect.

Also, im not even seeing the "Connection Failed" message, the app is just shutting down,.
In my Android application, I have to call the getSharedPreferences in non-activity classes. In order to avoid passing a Context object to each constructor of these classes (and because many of them are classes with only static methods which don't have a constructor), I have implemented these steps : The main activity of my application (which is launched at startup) is called Dispatcher. In the onCreate method of this class, I keep a reference to the created Dispatcher object in a static public variable of the Dispatcher class which can be accessed from any class in the project.

I am using Eclipse Juno, with an Android App targeting API 17. Basically I am getting a NoClassDefFoundError at runtime for the org. glassfish. jersey. model.internal.CommonConfig$1 class located in jersey-client-2.4.1.jar. This is when I just do a Run As... deploy from within Eclipse and it fails when I instantiate the CommonConfig class or one that depends on it internally. The start up log is given below:

It doesn't seem to find a static inner class of CommonConfig. In the SO forum I tinkered with some options in ProGuard but I've come to learn that this isn't even used in the standard debug mode, only when you do a release build (Export from Eclipse). It would appear that something is happening with the class but I can't figure out why it would not be included if its parent is. Is there some kind of 'light' ProGuard process that goes on when a debug deploy is done? how to resolve this particular case of NoClassDefFoundError?
I am new to Android, and I haven't developed any app regarding databases on Android yet. So I have a few basic questions. I am after a good database class sample, that will let me to run the CRUD operations. I would like to use it as a static class

I have an application that is driven by a configuration XML: various app properties are loaded at the app start-time by parsing the XML and initializing static variables of some class. The data read from this XML drives different Activities of the application. Presently, I have called the "parsing and the properties-initialization" from the onCreate() of my Main Activity. I have a few questions as regards this case/approach: Should I invoke the app initialization method from the Application Object or is the current approach correct?
What advantages/disadvantages do/would we get/have if I choose to invoke it from the Application object? Do we really need a static class to store app properties? Or can we have all the properties as a static Collection variable in the application object? Parsing a XML(~200 nodes) at app load time might take some time (not sure how long tho); How can I avoid the dreaded ANRs? I am using a Pull Parser.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm attempting to make a simple homebrew game engine/framework in android. I have the "engine" as a library project that handles all of the graphics rendering, game activity, and whatnot. Essentially, the library project has a class GameMain which has a background image, an array of drawables, and a few functions (the most important is a run() function). The projects that use this library extend this class with their own unique run() function. The idea is that games that use the engine start with their own activity, launch the GameActivity from the library, and pass their unique GameMain child object into the library, which should run the unique run() method thanks to polymorphism.
Getting this to work, however, has been a struggle. I originally attempted to make the GameMain Serializable, which didn't appear to work. I'm now attempting to make it a Parcelable, but it does not appear to run the child objects run() function when called from the library. I'm wondering, are Parcelable objects actually capable of sending Object methods across activities? Am I going about this the wrong way, or am I just having some other weird bug I have not uncovered?

Normally, this works fine. However, many times I find myself needing too preform an application using the outer class as a context. thusfar, I've used: parent.getContext(); to do this, but I would like to know, is that a bad idea? I can't really call: because it's not really a subclass, just an embedded one. So is there any better way, or is that considered cosure? Also, if it is the right way, what should I do if the embedded method doesn't have a parameter to get the outside class?

However one problem is that when the client terminates abruptly (without closing the socket properly) the server does not know that it is disconnected. Furthermore, the server can continue to write to this socket without getting any exceptions. Why? According to documentation Java sockets should throw exceptions if you try to write to a socket that is not reachable on the other end!

First of all, are sockets meant for many(1000+) clients connecting to one socket (say port 2202) on one server? The main activity will have a scrollable menu that takes you to all the other activities.

I can't find any simple list tutorials. I can easily make a single line list work but I need to make a two line list and one that is static, not dynamic and no examples are out there for that. It's like if you want to make a 2 line list, you can only learn how to do it in the most code-heavy ridiculous way possible.
Essentially what I am looking for with the list is this: Item one: Centred, bold, non selectable title (Resources)
- Item two-??: two line list items, click-able to a new activity, title of the section on first line, description on the second line.
- Item ??: Centred, bold, non selectable title (Tools)
- Item ??-??: two line list items, click-able to a new activity, title of the section on first line, description on the second line.
Nothing dynamic that is ever going to change, no super complex wonkey calculations, just to simply have the data set in stone (preferably via XML) and to call it into the list.
I experimented with some of the other list views and no matter what I did, I could get, via editing the resources and NOT using Java, more that one item on a single line but it wouldn't format it properly according to the layout I guess because I haven't got the ID correct or whatever I don't know.
I mean, all the examples I've seen for a 2 line list are extraordinarily over-coded and just bloated. I mean I have a website I am still working on in C#/ASP.net that has far more complex things in it with half the code that I've seen for the examples of the two line lists.
I tried on my own to figure it out (I am decent with C# and vaguely familiar with Java, self taught, and programming for some other systems like Python, again all self-taught), but like ALL coding references, they're organised by the actual code you implement (that you don't know) instead of by what you want it to do (so you have to search the whole code base to find something that you don't know what it's called but know what it does). >:C
I'm having some issues with the old "Cannot make a static reference to a non-static method" error in my Android program. I am creating a sand falling game (similar to the Powder Game) and I created a class called Control to create a Control Bar at the bottom of the screen with a slider for brush size (that works fine) and a button to pop up a Dialog to allow users to pick the selected element. However, when I call DemoActivity.showDialog(2) from my code, it gives the static reference to non-static error (DemoActivity is the main activity of my application). I also tried changing it to just Activity.showDialog(2), but I got exactly the same error!

I am writing an Android app that should exchange data to a server over Bluetooth, with the server side on a PC running Ubuntu, using the bluez library, in C (or C++).
My Android app fails (IOException) when I try to connect to my server socket on the PC.

This throws IOException after a timeout of 10seconds or so.
On the server side (in Ubuntu 8.10), I basically set up a Bluetooth server socket, along the lines described in the example bluez/sdp-register.c
Down below is my C++ program. To compile it do
g++ -I/usr/include/glib-2.0/ -I/usr/lib/glib-2.0/include -o bt_server bt_server.cpp -lbluetooth
I can do the reverse succesfully, i.e. create a server socket in Android and connect from Linux, however this is not what I want to do!
I think either the problem has to do with my config of Ubuntu.
