Mar 30, 2010i want to display a msg to the user (msg box or Toast) when exception happend in a static SQLite Database class that i use. the problem is that i cant call a non static method in a static class , how can i handle this. this is the class

Jan 5, 2010I am new to Android, and I haven't developed any app regarding databases on Android yet. So I have a few basic questions. I am after a good database class sample, that will let me to run the CRUD operations. I would like to use it as a static class

or objClient->Delete(clientid);
I am wondering if someone, can share his database classes, if more people share the best. Also I have in mind to reuse this class in multiple ways, I will have services, activities etc...
Android :: Parsing XML And Initializing Static Variables Of Some Class
Dec 21, 2009I have an application that is driven by a configuration XML: various app properties are loaded at the app start-time by parsing the XML and initializing static variables of some class. The data read from this XML drives different Activities of the application. Presently, I have called the "parsing and the properties-initialization" from the onCreate() of my Main Activity. I have a few questions as regards this case/approach: Should I invoke the app initialization method from the Application Object or is the current approach correct?
What advantages/disadvantages do/would we get/have if I choose to invoke it from the Application object? Do we really need a static class to store app properties? Or can we have all the properties as a static Collection variable in the application object? Parsing a XML(~200 nodes) at app load time might take some time (not sure how long tho); How can I avoid the dreaded ANRs? I am using a Pull Parser.
Android :: Call Non Static Method (Located In Main Class) From Different One
Oct 18, 2010I've been trying to call a non-static method, located in my main application Class, from the Preferences Class. Because the method I call is not static, I instantiate the main class and then try to call the specific method I want but it's force closing.

NoClassDefFoundError For Static Inner Class In Library Jar
Dec 9, 2013I have a thread on StackOverflow (titled: NoClassDefFoundError for Jersey 2.4.1 client in Android) but I thought I would reach out here in hope of getting a more specific/targeted audience group.I have followed instructions from other posts about the libs Android dependency fix but I still get the issue.
I am using Eclipse Juno, with an Android App targeting API 17. Basically I am getting a NoClassDefFoundError at runtime for the org. glassfish. jersey. model.internal.CommonConfig$1 class located in jersey-client-2.4.1.jar. This is when I just do a Run As... deploy from within Eclipse and it fails when I instantiate the CommonConfig class or one that depends on it internally. The start up log is given below:

It doesn't seem to find a static inner class of CommonConfig. In the SO forum I tinkered with some options in ProGuard but I've come to learn that this isn't even used in the standard debug mode, only when you do a release build (Export from Eclipse). It would appear that something is happening with the class but I can't figure out why it would not be included if its parent is. Is there some kind of 'light' ProGuard process that goes on when a debug deploy is done? how to resolve this particular case of NoClassDefFoundError?
Socket Object As Static Class Field?

Nov 5, 2010My Vibrant started shocking me today! At first it was just a shock here or there. I figured it was just because of static electricity, but as I went to pick it up a few minutes ago it wouldn't stop. It shocked me about 3-4 times very rapidly. Is this normal? It is plugged in via USB to my laptop. I'm still within the 2 week period, so I can go back and return it to Wal-Mart, but this is my 2nd vibrant I would be exchanging!

May 4, 2010For example, I have an activity that uses a utility class. I would like to be able to start an activity from the utility class and have the activity result sent back to the utility class.
The only way I could think of starting the activity was to pass the original activity to the utility class, so that the utility class could use the original activity to start the activity. The problem with this is that the activity is sent to the original activity, rather than the utility class.
I also thought of actually making the utility class an activity itself, but that would make using the utility class much more complicated.

Android :: All .class Files In My Java Application Loaded Into Memory After Appliaction Start?
Feb 3, 2010I am making an app for Android, in my Activity I need to load an array of about 10000 strings. Loading it from database was slow, so I decided to put it directly into one .java file (as a private field). I have about 20 of these classes containing string arrays and my question is, are all the classes loaded into memory after my application is started? If so the Activity in which I need these strings would be loaded quickly, but the application as a whole would have a slow start...
Is there other way, how to very quickly load an 10000 string array from a file?

Why I need these strings? My Android app allows you to find "journeys" in Prague's public transit - you choose departure stop, arrival stop and it finds your journey (have a look here). My app has a suggestions feature - you enter leter "c" as your departure stop and a suggestions ListView appears with stops starting with "c". For these suggestions I need the strings. Fetching the suggestions from database is slow (about 400ms on G1).

Android :: Cannot Make Static Reference To Anon-static Method
Feb 7, 2010I'm having some issues with the old "Cannot make a static reference to a non-static method" error in my Android program. I am creating a sand falling game (similar to the Powder Game) and I created a class called Control to create a Control Bar at the bottom of the screen with a slider for brush size (that works fine) and a button to pop up a Dialog to allow users to pick the selected element. However, when I call DemoActivity.showDialog(2) from my code, it gives the static reference to non-static error (DemoActivity is the main activity of my application). I also tried changing it to just Activity.showDialog(2), but I got exactly the same error!

Android :: Class Derived From Intent Service Must Have Default Constructor
May 8, 2009I'm posting this to share the lessons I learned while working with IntentService. IntentService has a single constructor that takes a string argument "name". The documentation has no description of what name is used for. In looking at the sources, I found that its only use is in naming the worker thread for the IntentService. This thread is named IntentService [name].
I initially implemented the constructor of the derived class to also take a String argument and passed it along to the derived class. This is wrong. This will cause the startService() call to generated a java.lang.InstantiationException in the application containing the service i.e. you don't get the exception in the application calling startService(). A clue to the actual problem is a little further up in the logs:"newInstance failed: no <init>()"
The derived class must have a Default constructor and that constructor must call super() passing a string for the name component of the worker thread name.

Jun 22, 2010Hi, custom classes which are part of a framework, so nothing graphical. One of those (singleton) classes is a Logging class which send logs to my server. I noticed that even though I can call the classes methods in my service it actually won't be logging anything... In my specific example it's osmething like : Logger.getInstance().log("Whatever I want to Log"); Obviously the getInstance is a static method so it can be accessed from anywhere within my project right away.. I was wondering though why this method for example isn't getting called ? Also how do I debug a Service ? Btw I am using of IPC from one of my Activities which gets bound to the service and can start/stop the music for example...

In my specific case I have a Service playing some sounds, but the sound is selected from a List with available sounds...
When a sounds is selected it is downloaded from my home server, this takes some time (not much, let's say around the 3-4 seconds, the sounds/effects aren't big in size)...
So my problem at the moment is that I have a service to play those sounds, and when I select one I wanted to show a progressdialog... The way (if I understood correctly) is to use an AsyncTask, but the only thing the AsyncTask will do is telling my Service to play a specific sound from my server... So there is no "callback" from the service to the Asynctask...
How can I call a running AsyncTask, which sits in another class, and tell him all work is done and thus he can stop showing the ProgressDialog ? Or am I over-engineering it and there are other ways ?

May 15, 2009We have a service. bindService() returns true. But our ServiceConnection is never called with onConnect(). The onCreate() of the service is never executed (neither is the onBind(), of course).
Except sometimes! (twice now, out of many many tries).
Remote service, local service, intent-filter, direct class invocation, "procedure" attribute, no procedure attribute, cupcake, 1.1, emulator, device ... we've tried 'em all!
We belive the service is found, and in the remote case, we see the new process always created ... but the dang service just isn't started. We aren't specifying any security settings and writing the simplest manifest entry we can....
