Sprint HTC Hero :: Should Root My Before Or After Activate It With Sprint?
Jan 25, 2010It arrives in the mail in a day or two, and I want to know if I should root it first thing before activating it or wait til I get it registered. Will I be able to install the official updates after being rooted? I hear that they fix a ton of issues.

Went through the Google account setup..."Your phone is communicating with Google" then I get a "You dont have a network connection" This could be a temp prob OR your sim card may not be provisioned for data services" I have a "Standby for connecting to mobile network" under the Mobile Network tab in phone settings. Jul 1, 2010Just in case someone else has the same dilema i had by buying thier EVO online for full price so they dindt have to get the 2 year contract. but then realizing that sprint requires a new 2 year contract with every new line you activete regardles of you bought the phone outright or not. heres how how to get around it.
1 Buy EVO 4G wherever.
2 Activated old phone with a new number on the basic Month to month 200 plan (had to be done at the Sprint store they wold not let me activate over the phone with this plan)
3 go home and upgrade plan online to 99.00 unlimited everything
4 Swap old phone with EVO under activate new phone online
5 Port your phone number from whereever you have it to Sprint replacing the new phone you just got when you avtivated the line
Thats it, it quite a few steps but atleast you wont have to worry about getting locked in to a new 2 year contract.

Jul 5, 2010I have read a couple of threads that touched on this ring issue, but was unable to find any that had a solution or work around.Since the 2.1 update and the OTA update, many times when an incoming call comes, the phone doesn't ring. If I happen to be in front of the phone, I can see the screen change showing an incoming call.If I am listening to Pandora Radio, when the phone rings, Pandora stops, but the phone never rings.If I am not near or looking at the phone this results in missing the call.If I shut off the phone and re-boot it appears to ring fine, but at some point later in the day or week it will quit ringing.I normally never turn off the phone. Should I start to re-boot every day?

Nov 7, 2009I downloaded Locale recently and it looks like a good app. I have set it to turn on my Wifi shortly before I get up in the morning to allow it to download some files (Guardian App and hopefully some podcasts). I've set Guardian to only download the newspaper via Wifi. For some reason Locale doesn't seem to be able to switch the Wifi on unless I awake the phone from sleep. I've been into the Wifi sleep policy Setting menu on the Hero and set it to never. Any ideas why it's not working?

Sep 13, 2010There has been almost no variation from that. Every now and then Display or Wi-Fi would show up as about 2% each, then disappear after a while. That's all.Last night my battery reached 10%, I turned off the power, charged it overnight for 12 hours, unplugged it, and turned the power back on. I noticed two things:
1. My Battery Use list changed drastically. I assume this is actually a better representation of what the list should look like than what I had been seeing for two weeks, but the other thing I noticed was
2. My battery was draining a lot faster than it ever had during the previous two weeks, even during idle periods.My battery had consistently been draining at around 1% per hour idle until today. Now I'm seeing it drop 5% in LESS than an hour while idle (idle meaning the screen shuts off and I don't use it).
So my question is, what do Cell Standby and Phone Idle mean? Previously they had both been 2% and my idle battery use was excellent. But today they both shot up to the 20-30% range and I'm thinking this may account for the excessive battery drain even while the phone is sleeping.Why would these two things be so high? Nothing changed between yesterday and today except that I turned off the phone and turned it back on. I almost feel like I messed something up by simply turning it off!

What I really need the phone to be able to do is voice calling, text, email, web browsing, etc. I'm not a power user, so I don't think I'd use the full power of the Evo anyway, so that's another reason to stick with the Hero.And if I understand correctly, I'd be eligible for upgrade pricing after 1yr with Sprint.

Jun 1, 2010When I deactivate my Android phone, I push the power button, and the screen then shows nothing more, i.e. it looks deactivated. But when I push back the power button, say, 2 hours after, it directly notices me that I have a new message, if so. How can it know this, if it was shut down? Is the whole device in some standby mode when you turn it off like that? So, does the antenna still works in this case? Is it the right way to use an Android phone? I.e. if somebody calls me, will I be noticed of this call if I deactivate my phone as mentioned above? Or should I let it always turned on for real (i.e. with screen acting, etc.)?

Battery lasts for about 4-5h i have read forums and googeld for 2 days now.So far i changed my Background to a black one i made wifi turn off after 15min no Bluetooth etc.I think the problem is that my phone never goes in to sleep mode.when i go setting > about phone > battery the up time and awake time is the same.I downloaded advance task killer but the only program i can see running is Smart Keyboard Pro and Amazon. I kill amazon and it stays dead for sometime i cant kill smart keyboard pro it restarts it self straight away.I have had the phone on charge for about 6h now and the battery seams stuck half way and don't relay increase or its increasing very slowly.

Oct 30, 2010I am developing an application that use the GPS and the geolocalion. So, during the application launch, I have to be sure that the user has activated the network and GPS. If he didn't tested 2 solutions : Ask the user to activate them himself (so the application quit, and the user has to reload it) Redirect the user in the corresponding view in order to activate them ( via something like "android.provider.Settings.ACTION_LOCATION_SOURCE_SETTINGS " )
The second solution is better to my mind but can be very boring for the user if he has to activate the Network + the GPS + Nework localisation That's why I ask if it is not possible to activate all that automatically if it is not possible ? I think it is possible because it exists widget that let the user activate network, gps etc... but how can we do that in the application?
