Android :: Phone In Standby Mode And Alarm Function
Jan 8, 2010
I've used blackberry's for a long time now and love one feature of it. The Standby mode that you can put the phone into and the only notification that will pull it out is the alarm clock. I've found a few alarms that will disable notifications, except calls. Well I don't want any notifications through the night. Only the alarm waking me up in the morning. Is anyone familiar with an existing app that puts the phone in a low energy sleep that only wakes it up for the alarm clock?

When I deactivate my Android phone, I push the power button, and the screen then shows nothing more, i.e. it looks deactivated. But when I push back the power button, say, 2 hours after, it directly notices me that I have a new message, if so. How can it know this, if it was shut down? Is the whole device in some standby mode when you turn it off like that? So, does the antenna still works in this case? Is it the right way to use an Android phone? I.e. if somebody calls me, will I be noticed of this call if I deactivate my phone as mentioned above? Or should I let it always turned on for real (i.e. with screen acting, etc.)?

i just got a htc desire 5days ago i moved over from a iPhone 3G. I have a big problem with it. Battery lasts for about 4-5h i have read forums and googeld for 2 days now.So far i changed my Background to a black one i made wifi turn off after 15min no Bluetooth etc.I think the problem is that my phone never goes in to sleep mode.when i go setting > about phone > battery the up time and awake time is the same.I downloaded advance task killer but the only program i can see running is Smart Keyboard Pro and Amazon. I kill amazon and it stays dead for sometime i cant kill smart keyboard pro it restarts it self straight away.I have had the phone on charge for about 6h now and the battery seams stuck half way and don't relay increase or its increasing very slowly.

From what I can tell, if you turn on WiFi the phone never sleeps even in standby mode. Is this a known issue or has anyone else noticed this. I noticed this using Spare Parts and turning off and on things until I saw it was wifi that keeps it awake.

The screen is off, with the phone left in standby mode. Is it normal for it to die that fast.

I have an app that needs to send a periodic heart beat to a server, but when the phone goes into standby mode the background heartbeat thread dies. Is there anyway to wake the phone from standby, send the heartbeat and then go back to sleep programmatically? I want to avoid using PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK if possible.

I'm trying to log the phone's cell movement. So I created a PhoneStateListener that is being called when the CellLocation has been changed. Then it informs a logging service to write that new cell information to a log file.
This works as long as the screen is on. But when the screen goes off, the logging stops.
I have two classes:
The PhoneStateListener gets loaded on boot time public class CellStateListener extends PhoneStateListener { public void onCellLocationChanged(CellLocation location) {...this is the logging service which is informed when the cell location changes listener.onCellChanged(mcc, mnc, lac, cid); ... }

Is there any settings that can make the droid screen light up when you receive a notification like an email. On most phones (including my old LG Dare), whenever you are sitting around and the screen is off/locked/in standby, you get a text message and it lights up the screen and says "you have a text message".
I have messed around with the different notifications settings so it will vibrate/sound off when you get one, but if you are in the car and have the phone just chillin there listening to loud music.. sometimes you don't hear it but I would like to be able to see the screen light up when notifications come in... instead of just that little green status light blinking.
It's not that big of an issue, but the whole screen lighting up usually grabs your attention when you are in a crowded bar or loud vehicle so it would be nice for it to show up at least for text messages.

Just bought a Vibrant off of CL. I got it unlocked and it seems to be running well off of AT&T. I had a few questions though.
1) Whenever it is in the sleep/standby mode it will randomly flash on. I won't get any new emails or txt messages but it does stay on for a while until the screen timeout period ends
2) It does display a "Refreshing SIM data" message at the bottomish area every few minutes. Is this normal or is this an AT&T thing...
3) I was able to reset everything from going to the Settings>privacy>factory data reset but the instructions for a hard reset of "turning on the phone while holding down the volume down button" did not work. Has anyone been able to pull this off?
All in all I'm pretty jazzed about the phone. I like the Swype typing a lot as well as the overall speed and app installs. I'm coming from a work iPhone and an old school bar phone that could only call and txt. My wife has a iPhone4 and even though the facetime feature is nice I still don't like the restrictiveness of Apple products.

My wife relies on her snooze very often, and it appears as though her Vibrant only allows her to snooze twice. Any more than that simply will not work.

My alarm clock sometimes decides to snooze for an hour and 10 mins rather than 10 mins. I nearly missed work on Friday, what is going on!? I waited a long time for the X10 mini to come out and admit that I am a little dissappointed. I've had a SE W580i until recently and I am finding that there are a lot of basic things that my old phone could handle but my new one seems to struggle with.I have used my phone alarm as my only alarm clock for at least the last 5 years. I really struggle to get up in the morning and if I turn the alarm off, I'll fall straight back to sleep again, therefore I rely heavily on the phone's snooze function to wake me up eventually after going off a few times. I was initially dissappointed that you cannot personalise the snooze duration on the x10 mini, the 10 mins is usually ok for me but in certain situations I prefer to shorten it. Please consider including this in the next software update, Sony Ericsson!
But the pressing problem is the (massively) extended snooze. It happens every few days and seems to be quite random. The first few times I hit the snooze button, it works as normal. A picture of an alarm clock comes up showing the time, and a white segment of clock face is highlighted indicating how long the snooze is for (10 mins) and when it will next go off. Then, I stir due to some disturbance outside, notice that the sun is definitely brighter than it was when I was last awake, grab my phone in a panic and realise that I have been sleeping for 20 mins since the alarm last went off, and that I have less than 7 mins to get up, dressed, packed and on the bus or I will be late for work. Meanwhile my phone is cheerfully still displaying the clock face with the white segment showing that I have 40 mins left to snooze and all is well. I didn't even know it was possible for this phone to snooze for anything other than 10 mins. Unfortunately I am asleep whenever this has happened and I'm not sure how I've done it.
I have tried setting the alarm when awake and then pressing various buttons, tapping the screen in various places, even pressing and holding the snooze button or swiping it. Most of these actions do nothing and the only way to stop the alarm is to slide to turn off or press the snooze button. My theory as to what is happening is that the phone snoozes for the normal 10 mins, but then when it reaches the time to go off again, it fails to go off and then the snooze time is displayed as 50 minutes (until it reaches that time again for the next hour). I think the white segment does initially show the 10 mins, I've started checking when I hit the snooze button after it happened a few times, but I might be doing something different in my sleep somehow.

I recently bought my first Android: an HTC Hero. I really like it, but there's something that doesn't quite work as expected: When I put my phone in "silent mode", and I set an alarm (Clock application) to wake me up in the morning, the alarm doesn't sound in the morning. Other cell phone alarms do trigger when the phone is in silent mode. I don't think this is such an exceptional scenario: I want my phone to be quiet all night: no calls, no SMS's, no email notifications. But I do want it to wake me up in the morning. Any ideas on how to accomplish this?

Are there any good alarm applications for the X10i?
Basically I use my phone as an alarm to get up for work. My old Nokia N96 I could set the alarm and then switch the phone off at night and the alarm would still go off on time. This does not seem to be the case with the X10i. It doesn't even go off when the phones in airplane mode which is poor. I just don't want to have to leave my phone on overnight in case it rings and i wake up.
Are there any good alarm apps that allows you to turn the phone off and the alarm would still ring at 6.30 for work?

Just installed this last night. worked well. Actually woke me up 10 min earlier than alarm time. Guess it works. what sold me on it, besides free, is that it has a airplane mode. I dont know about others, but when i sleep, i sleep. i dont wake up at a drop of a hat when (and if) i hear the phone go off. (plus it saves on battery)

I had set the Hero to "silent mode" (by long-pressing the power-off button and selecting "silent mode"). A crossed-out quaver appeared in the notification bar to confirm that the phone was silenced. However an alarm has just gone off very audibly. What have I done wrong?

The alarm does not sound when my tablet goes into sleep mode until I turn it on and without unlock it, is at this moment that it begins to sound even if the time go over, this is the case with many applications alarm, for the moment I use Alarm Clock Plus.
I have a Chinese Android tablet with Jelly Bean 4.1.1 rooted. I don't use any task killer.

I have an android application that I want to always be running in landscape mode.
I have the following code implemented to keep the app in landscape mode all the time:
inside my activity in the Application Manifest
android:screenOrientation="landscape"
This seems to launch and keep the application in landscape view for the whole duration of the application. Perfect!
However, if I have the app running on my HTC Aria (Android 2.1) and the phone locks, if I unlock the phone, I see the application for probably half a second and it's in portrait orientation and then quickly switches back to landscape mode. It is quite frustrating because all of my views are jumbled around and it looks unprofessional as you can imagine. This happens in both the emulator and on my real phone.
Does anyone know how to stop the application from temporarily rotating when the phone is unlocked?
I have tried overriding onConfigurationChanged() but with no success.
I have also tried putting setRequestedOrientation(ActivityInfo.SCREEN_ORIENTATION_LANDSCAPE); into the onResume() but the app still shows as the incorrect orientation for a split second when the phone is unlocked.

There has been almost no variation from that. Every now and then Display or Wi-Fi would show up as about 2% each, then disappear after a while. That's all.Last night my battery reached 10%, I turned off the power, charged it overnight for 12 hours, unplugged it, and turned the power back on. I noticed two things:
1. My Battery Use list changed drastically. I assume this is actually a better representation of what the list should look like than what I had been seeing for two weeks, but the other thing I noticed was
2. My battery was draining a lot faster than it ever had during the previous two weeks, even during idle periods. My battery had consistently been draining at around 1% per hour idle until today. Now I'm seeing it drop 5% in LESS than an hour while idle (idle meaning the screen shuts off and I don't use it).
So my question is, what do Cell Standby and Phone Idle mean? Previously they had both been 2% and my idle battery use was excellent. But today they both shot up to the 20-30% range and I'm thinking this may account for the excessive battery drain even while the phone is sleeping. Why would these two things be so high? Nothing changed between yesterday and today except that I turned off the phone and turned it back on. I almost feel like I messed something up by simply turning it off!
