A few of us at work are wondering if we can use the google map or anyother type of locating device on our phones without phone service. Does the google maps show our location using the cell towers?

I'm about to retire my trusty old Epic 4G and whats the best way to store my battery on it. I will be removing it but I'm not sure whether I should store it fully charged or half way charged. If I remember correctly, I read somewhere that you should store your battery with 50% charge for it to have some life if you ever need to use the phone months or a few years time. Storing it fully charged can pose a threat due to the battery blowing up?!?! Not sure if this is correct or not. What to do to preserve your unused batteries in your old phones?

I was demo'ing a DroidX the other day and was blown away by the google map and voice ability. This will lead me to buying one of the android devices. Among other features. Query: Can GPS enabled apps, work on the phone, without cell serivce. IE can you pre-load say all the US map and POI info into the phone so it can be used as a standalone GPS in the middle of no where.

If anyone is CURRENTLY with Sprint for their cell service in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area of Arizona, could you please tell me how your cell service is?I'm looking at moving to the HTC EVO in June when my contract is up with Verizon, but I'm pretty worried about the quality of Sprint's service. Most comments I have heard about Sprint have been either average or negative. On the contrary, my time with Verizon has really been stellar, few if any dropped calls, coverage EVERYWHERE it seems, and pretty decent customer service.Even though Sprints plans are $30 to $40 cheaper than Verizon, it won't matter if the service stinks and I can't make/receive calls or get on broadband.Just trying to weigh my options as the Incredible will be out as well, and may have to go with that one instead.

While installiing "google play services" I got some error 919 "Incompatible with other applications(s) using the same shared user ID", for which i googled for solutions which said to uninstall Google service framework(GSF) then, install play services and then again install GSF.
when i tried to uninstall the GSF via "titanium backup" i was unable to do so. Hence i thought of converting it to an user app ,then take a backup of apk file and then uninstall it. While doing so, it was taking very much time, so i rebooted my phone, after which i did not found GSF in my apps list.
Now i'm not able to have an access to play store.
My GSF version was 4.0.1- 212031

So I flashed CM6 tonight and everything seemed to go fine. However, I have NO SERVICE at all with it. I did revert back to previous stock ROM and had service just fine.Reinstalled CM6 thinking maybe that would fix it - no go.If it is not one thing, it is another anytime I try to install a new ROM.

I'm heading out to Haiti next week to volunteer with the earthquake relief effort. The NGO base where I'll be camping will have WiFi for a couple hours a day. I don't want to lug a laptop down there but want to stay connected to email. Do you know if there's any issue using WiFi without cell service?I don't have a desire to be using the cell phone service while I'm there; email will be enough.

For the past couple weeks my phone has been acting very strange and has been getting pretty poor recpetion. I run BB.4 and P3Droid 1.0ghz and 3e baseband. I have tried .41 & .43 and did not get any better reception. Basically the issue is i get 3g for a while and all of a sudden i get 1x where i should have full 3g. If i shut my phone off and turn back on I then get 3g service back. I ultimately noticed it while in Chicago and i had terrible service when everyone else had great service. In Chi i went through all the basebands with no luck. Yesterday I restored back to rooted 2.1 by Pete and i still had a issue. So what i am looking for is there any settings i should look for that maybe off. I doubt its a common issue and i want to look at everything before calling to get it swapped out for a like new droid.

I've experienced two problems with Google Voice that are causing me to get charged minutes I wouldn't usually get charged. If I can't solve them, I'll have to go back to using my Verizon number. First, let me say that I'm using a new Google Voice number that isn't Verizon cell phone number or any other preexisting number. Second, my girlfriend is on my family plan, but she doesn't have GV yet. We're using the 700-minute plan, so we don't have a friends circle.
Problem 1: When I call my girlfriend's Verizon wireless phone using the GV on my Verizon phone, I get charged, and when she calls my GV number on my Verizon Wireless phone from her Verizon wireless phone, she gets charged. We don't cash in on our free in-network calling. I know, this should have been obvious, but it just never occurred to me until after I looked at the bill. I'd be able to work with that, though, and just select "Call without using Google Voice" or whatever when calling her if it weren't for the second problem. When people call my Google Voice number, I get charged when I don't answer. Usually, it's just a one-minute charge, but sometimes it's two or three minutes (don't know why). With anything less than an unlimited plan, minutes count. Not good.

I was just surfing the Google Play Store on my laptop, just browsing some apps, when I noticed my phone HTC ADR6425LVW showed up 3 different times when it prompted which device to download the app, too.
I am rooted, I have the HTC Rezound and a couple days ago, the desktop Google Play Store showed 2 different versions of my phone. I didn't really make anything of it because I exchanged my phone for a new one during the 14 day return period. Why this would happen, unless it occurs when I flash new ROMS. But I've flashed at least 6 ROMS over the course of at least 20 different times. Would this cause warranty issues if I try to have a replacement done if something happens to my phone?

I am trying to write a very simple Android application that checks the signal strength of the current cell. So far, I have only found something called getNeighboringCellInfo(), but I'm not really sure if that includes the current cell. How do I get the CURRENT cell signal strength in Android?Does getNeighborCellInfo() get the current cell? It doesn't seem like it based on the results that I have been able to get with it.

Based on some quick tests, I've noticed the following: if you kill the Google Messaging Service, Chrome to Phone (a.k.a. Send to Phone) will stop working.
This seems rather obvious, but I had been in the habit of killing the Google Talk Service (GTalk) prior to Froyo. After Froyo, it looks like the service was renamed/replaced with Google Messaging Service.
I suspect that killing the Google Messaging Service could affect other Google services too.

I'm writing an android application that collects cell signal strengths.I am having trouble getting the "current" cell signal strength, but I don't have any problem getting the "neighboring" cell signal strengths. To get the current cell signal strength, I created a PhoneStateListener and implemented the onSignalStrengthChanged callback. It works, but not very well.It seems like the signal strength hardly ever changes, and resolution jumps to only a few numbers.I would accept the answer that the resolution of the signal strength hardware is coarse, but when I use the TelephonyManager's getNeighboringCellInfo() method, it works much better. The signal strength readings from neighboring cells change frequently, and they have much better resolution. So, how can I get the current cell signal strength in the same way that I am getting the neighboring cell strengths? It seems odd to me that the functionality of the neighboring cells is better than the current cell.

I have a app that only consists of 2 services and a broadcast receiver (they check the internet periodically). I need to store preferences that can be shared across those services. Is this the same as for an activity? Just use getsharedpreferences()? This doesn't seem to be documented very well.

I've been playing around with google voice vs verizon cell. Has anyone done any controlled tests on the voice quality of Google Voice vs. just using the native Verizon voice? When you initiate a call via Google Voice does it use your voice minutes or is it 100% over the data network?

If anyone knows how, please let me know.

How does Android provide support for traditional TCP or UDP sockets? Is there a wireless IP protocol using just the cell phone? If so, how does this work? Or, do I need an 802.11 chipset in the handset (assuming this isn't standard)?

If I ever figure out how to root my cellularsouth hero, can i or should I download and install 2.1 when we finally get it from my carrier? Will it just over write what I have on there or will it need to be flashed back to stock? There really is no way to back up the OS from what I can tell. When i jailbroke my iphone an upgrade just put it back to factory default with the upgrade. I don't think it works like that with Android right? Because of not baing able to back up the phone before hand i worry about bricking it.
I am also wondering since there is so much trouble rooting the cellularsouth version of the hero, if it is even worth it. By the time i or someone else figures it out 2.1 will be out and then it may be a long time to get that rooted too. Sometimes I wish this company I am with was not cdma. cdma seems to have the most trouble getting rooted. But we do get great signal and service, but thats about all with this company.

Is there a app or a way to not have a call come through my cell when listening to Pandora or some other audio app? This happens frequently and it's a pain in the ass to get back to normal after I send the call to voicemail. I'd like to have it where incoming phone calls don't interrupt audio streaming. I have a Samsung Moment.

There is a site Cellreception.com that tries to aggregate cell phone reception from users who bother to leave reviews. But data collection can be made much more easier, even passive:
Make an app that sends the phone's GPS location and the 2G/3G signal strength of the current provider in that location, to a centralized database, aggregate the results, and make them public online.
Nth Signal seems to be an app like that, but I can't find it on the market, and the reviews on Androlib are not good.
