Sprint HTC Hero :: International Voice / Data Plan Can Sign Up / Don't End Up Paying Sky-high Roaming Rates?
Jun 6, 2010
I'm heading to Halifax, Nova Scotia for a week and will be bringing my Hero with me. I'll be calling Sprint customer support to see what options are available for voice and data, but I trust the advice of folks in this forum.
Is there any international voice and data plan that i can sign up for so that I don't end up paying sky-high roaming rates? I really don't want to have to keep my phone in airplane mode the whole week. Any advice from travelers to the "Great White North" would really be appreciated, eh?

I thought that we were allowed 300 MB of data roaming without running into overages. I checked my bill today online and it said I use 981 KB out of 0 KB of data available while roaming, but it said I was charged $0.00 for this.

About to be heading to south America for a while, does anyone have international service on their sprint plan? How much extra is it? It is cost per minute as well? What about text and data? Any hidden fees or things I should know about? I'd ask sprint but feel I'll get a much more honest answer here.

Here's a question that comes from an unclear view of how things work : can a a phone be data roaming without being voice roaming? If so how can a begin data roaming event can be detected? This question came to me from the DDMS options , where one can have" data roaming " and "home voice".

I'm based in the US and if I go into my google checkout merchant account and go into tax settings, there are only options for setting tax rates for US states. Aren't we supposed to charge VAT taxes if we sell ( via Android Market/Google Checkout) internationally?
Not that I would know how to actually pay those countries their taxes.
Do I in fact owe taxes to other countries if I'm in the US and selling software (apps) say to the UK? My company has physical presence in only one US state. For sales to US customers that typically means I only have to charge (the customer) and pay (the state) sales tax when the "shipping address" of the customer is in the same state that my company has a presence in.
But how is it supposed to work for sales from US to other countries, and where do we set this up in Google Checkout and how (if in fact we owe those countries their tax money) do we actually go about paying them?

Just wondering if anyone knows how data roaming works with Sprint. I was in an area where I was roaming but it seemed as though the Facebook app was updating. Maybe I hit a pocket of wifi access, I dunno. So, is data roaming happening? If so, is it included under the "no roaming charges" umbrella that comes with the Everything plans or could be be charged for roaming data?

I just got my invite to Google voice and I was super excited, but then I found out there were some issues with Sprint playing nice with GV. I have a couple of questions for any of you using GV with sprint network. FYI, I have the any mobile any time plan. Questions:
1. I understand that sprint treats GV as a landline call, does this mean that it will eat my minutes with every call? also, is there a workaround for this? 2. should I get a google number or keep my number 3. if i get a google number can people still call my old number? 4. I read a lot about call forwarding and some *28 and *73 options, but i couldn't wrap my head around what to actually do. I know sprint dropped some 20 cent charge, but I also read that in some situations that charge still applies. 5. can you cancel out of the service after you have signed up.

I have been a Sprint customer for a very long time. My wife and I both have smartphones and we have the Unlimited 1500 plan. To my knowledge, this includes everything (excluding International calls.....which I know for a fact thanks to an $1800 fraud that was on my bill 2 months ago). I digress, data roaming is included as a part of this plan as far as I know.
I checked my bill online yesterday, and there was an alert that I have used 3800+KB of data roaming.
Now....let me start by saying, yes, I do have the setting checked to allow for data roaming (as to my knowledge, it's included in my plan). I do have the Hero (my second one) and for the life of me, I can't figure out why it goes into roaming mode more than any other Sprint phone I've ever owned. My wife's phone could be sitting next to mine, and I'll be roaming while she is not. That being said, I can guarantee there have been instances where I've roamed and pulled down data (checking email, automatically checking weather/facebook/twitter/etc, internet) and I've never seen this alert on my account.
I called Sprint last night to question it, and they put a $20 service credit on my account. That's all fine and great, as I'm not going to turn down free money, but I had explained that my concern was that the alert is showing up to begin with. I even explained that while I appreciate the credit, I'd rather just have this situation resolved so that I don't have to call back next month if these charges appear.
My question is this, has anyone ever seen this before? I am rooted, I am running Fresh 2.1.1 and I have the latest SPRINT radio flashed from Flipz' website. I have had this setup for a little over 2 months now, so this isn't the first billing cycle that this setup has seen. I can't figure this out for the life of me.
If this continues to be a problem, it's either going to require a new device or a new carrier. I live in a very populated western suburb in Chicagoland and have NEVER had a problem with roaming or poor signal until I got the Hero in October.

Slightly off topic, but for Desire and you lot seem to know your stuff. I'm travelling in the states for a month. Is it worth getting a local sim or just paying the crazy roaming charges. If local sim, what's the best way to get one?
I only really need the internet side of things. Will occasionally check voicemail and the odd text, but those costs will be small. Cycling Vancouver to San Fran so having unlimited access for those 2 weeks would be a massive help. Any ideas? I'm on O2 with an unbranded Desire.

Does anyone know/have experience with avoiding int'l roaming charges? I called verizon and the rep said that I would roam anytime my phone is on, and that I would incur charges, which is NOT what I want. I don't need 3G or any other type of phone or data connection associated with the network. All I want to be able to do is use Fring/skype/googlevoice through a WiFi connection. I've been reading and am getting confused with all this 'APN' on/off stuff. Can't I just put the phone in airport mode and connect to WiFi through my DINC?

I'm doing a bit of international travel next week. Just got off the phone with VZW. The woman on the other end of the line told me that, even when internationally roaming, calls are free. Not free except for data. As in you don't get charged. Even over 3G (since it doesn't work over WiFi). I don't think that she was right. Can anyone confirm this? I would have much less trouble believing this if Skype were enabled with WiFi.

I just took my first trip to Europe with my Captivate. While there I could not get my corporate email service (which is setup via exchange activesync) to push email. The only way I could get email was to open the email application. It would then force a sync and update. The gmail push (with gmail app) seamed to work fairly well although delayed. As soon as I landed on US soil yesterday, push was instantaneous. I am coming from Blackberry so I am used to seamless push everywhere in the world. I have talked to some iPhone users and they indicate similar issues. So is this just an exchange thing that I have to live with or is there something that I can do to improve performance?

I am looking for information regarding international roaming charges. For informational purposes I am using the Samsung Vibrant. I want to know if I turn off the "Data while Roaming" feature and put my phone into Airplane mode will I still be charged if I check my email and surf the web only when connected to a WiFI network. I am getting mixed responses from customer service whether or not I can bypass international roaming charges by doing this. I'm pretty sure I won't be charged when using my phone over wifi but I just wanted to make sure.

I'm going to be in Japan for 10 days. I read that they put in a 3G network so I called Verizon and our phone do work there! Here's the catch, it's 1.99 per min! They have a Global Data Package that 64.99 unlimited data, so I'm putting that on for the 10 days I'm there. I just got my Dinc last week and I'm a total noob when it comes to it. Is there an app or way to use wifi to place calls cheaper? I've tried searching these forums but I can't find anything.

With all this talk about people buying the i7500 from Germany; I was wondering if T-mobile has any rules/detection against us using an android phone bought from outside, on the network using a normal voice+data plan like the $30+$10 plan. Because given the price difference of a 2 yr contract a new phone would in theory need to be over $560 before it is no longer worth buying outside. So what is the incentive of getting a simlocked phone, that costs more, and be locked into a 2 yr contract? I guess this applies to some of the other smartphones as well.

I need to dial a number in Germany which would be +49... now since i can't make that call with my verizon plan i bought a CBS phone card. so i hit 1 for English, 2 for international etc. then when i need to enter the number, on my old phone it worked fine by holding 0 for a while to dial +49. but for some reason that doesn't work with the droid. any ideas?

after installing 2.2 on my hero, everything was working fine, until now. im having problems with my text messages, they wont send under sprints network, if i put it in roaming then they send right away, but roaming has awefully slow (1x) network speeds, but if i put it back to the 3g network speeds of sprint then everytime i try to send a text it just swirls in circles (the little thing next to the message) and wont send. is this sprints network being down? or does this have to do with the 2.2 update?i dont think its sprint because my mom and sister arent having any problems with there phones from the same plan. but i tryed restarting many times, taking out and leaving out the battery, putting it in airplane mode and turning that back off to reset connection, iv tryed everything and cant get it to work, so idk what to do, and i dont understand why if it was a software problem with the 2.2 installation, why would they send in roaming but not on sprints network?

Lately I have been getting very poor signal strength on my Hero. It went from 3 or 4 bars, down to 1 or 2 at my house, and I constantly drop calls. I live in an area where I am supposed to have excellent signal strength too. Called tech support, they checked the towers, and all is fine. I have my phone set to Sprint only, and whenever I make a call, and end the call, my signal drops to 0, and sometimes even get an x meaning no signal, but either way what bothers me is when I end the call my data, whether it is Ev, or 1x lights up and sends/receive's data for about 5 seconds. After that the signal comes back. Now what in the world does data have to do with voice? Nothing. My phone is stock with no 3rd party apps installed at all.
I have reset to factory too, doesn't help Firmware and PRL are both up to date too.

I am turning my Hero in for a new EVO and I had information in my Google Voice account that I do not want anyone at the office to be able to dig up...
I performed a factory reset (per the manual) and I want to be 110% sure that no one will be able to "resurrect" my old Google Voice app and see anything...

I'm new to AF, but I've been lurking here for about 2 months. Did my homework and ended up buying the Samsung Moment and Samsung Exclaim for my girlfriend and I with a new Sprint contract. We're both thoroughly pleased with our phones and our plan. But I do have a question that I haven't seen addressed here. I jumped through all the hoops and was finally able to install PdaNet 2.17 on both my computer and phone. I tested it a little after getting it connected and was pretty well pleased with the performance of both the phone and the software. However, I will not be tethering my phone again until I can find out whether or not Sprint will bill me for it.As far as what I can tell from online sources the data plan truly is unlimited and Sprint cannot tell for a fact if my phone is tethered or not, although the bandwidth usage will be significantly higher during tethering sessions. BUT, a friend of mine informed me that Sprint knows when you're tethering and will charge you as if it is a separate line or however they can. All I heard was that it would cost me.I'm sorry for the long post, but I included the details for clarity's sake and as an insight into the kind of posts the AF community can expect from it's friendly neighborhood HampMan. Any input to the subject matter will be greatly appreciated and I thank you all in advance.

I was trying to find out from T-mobile, how long 15 PAYG foreign Data roaming (I'm from the UK, but travelling to Belgium for a few days) would last. I know it depends on usage, but they couldn;t tell me if I, say, checked my emails a couple of times and used the GPS a couple of times a day, how big a chunk of my 15 it would take.

When traveling near my home area I encounter areas with no Sprint service. The phone roams into Verizon network which is very strong in my area. Beginning last week when I attempt to make a call when roaming on Verizon I get a message stating Verizon can not verify this phone number unable to make call. I contacted Sprint about the problem. They suggested a few things i already did, update PRL and profile etc.... which did not help. They told me there was nothing they could do because they cant guarantee service on their phones when roaming. This baffles me because phone roamed fine on Verizon for 6 months all of a sudden it doesnt. Any ideas on how this can be fixed? About 30 percent of my home town has no Sprint coverage so I guess I am just SOL.

Whenever I leave my home Wi-Fi hotspot, my phone seems to pop up with a notification, asking me if I want to go in to roaming mode (or something along those lines - I can't remember the exact phrase and I can't recreate the notification without leaving the house). I've only noticed this when I've come to pull the phone out of my pocket. I tell it to just carry on using my mobile network for data connectivity.
When I return home, instead of returning to the Wi-Fi network, it carries on using my mobile network for data connectivity.
How do I get the phone to automatically switch to using my mobile network for data when I'm not in my hotspot and then to automatically switch back to it when I am in the hotspot? It's driving me mental at the moment, and there doesn't appear to be anything obvious in the phone or any documentation!
What do I need to do for network connections to be implemented automatically?
