Sprint HTC Hero :: Can't Find Good Source For What App Does And How To Properly Use It?
Oct 27, 2009
It seems to me that if you are not a programmer or have a solid knowledge base about operating systems then you will struggle with apps.I can not find a good source for what app does and how to properly use it.Very frustrating.Seems there are tons of good apps out there but I have no idea how to use them or if they would make my "smartphone" experience better.

Ok, so after searching for a few hours, I have seen it said three ways.
1. To properly close an app so it doesn't run in the background, you need to back out of it.
2. To properly close an app so it doesn't run in the background, you need to hit your home button.
3. To properly close an app so it doesn't run in the background, you need to go into task manager and just kill it.
All I want to do, is exit the app and have it NOT running in the background.

We all know that if you hold the Home button it gives us a pop up of recently used applications that run in the background for a certain amount of time. But when I do this, then I press home to get back to the home screen, I get that annoying pop up asking me if I want to use Home or HTC Sense UI. So I checkmark the box to set HTC Sense UI to default and when I press home any other time, it goes to the home screen... But when I use that multitasking feature, it shows that damn screen again...
Is this because of Fresh 1.1? Or is there a way I can get rid of this?

My phone is working very well and plays .wmv file all the time. I had a .wmv file that I wanted to edit and shorten. I got the software and did the job and put it back on my phone. When I try to play it all I get is the sound now and no video. I checked the size of the video and it's still the same size but while the media player shows the progress and it rolls in to the landscape mode it won't show the picture.

I came from the BlackBerry world, and they have these great charging pods that you can set your device in and it charges it upright. Works great to just keep on your desk and keep the device charged throughout the day without having to plug and unplug a cable. Any good options for this phone?

I've noticed after I have rooted and installed the newest Fresh rom I have problems getting my alarm to shut off in the morning. It's not a huge problem, just an annoyance. I have not installed vanilla lock screen, I did search the forums which states if you use that you have to use vanilla clock. I literally have to shut off the alarm every morning by shutting down the phone. Sometimes I do get lucky and it shuts off (after about 1-2 minutes) and then I have to disable the alarm and re-enable it or it will snooze.

Is anyone having an issue with yahoo messenger on the HTC hero? It worked well at first - but now it doesn't. Specifically - I can log in - but none of my contacts pop up. In addition, I can send IM's from my phone - but I can't receive them.

I've been a long time WinMo user and generally pretty happy (and, no, I don't need a barrage of "WinMo sucks" comments :-)). But I decided to switch to Android recently. In fact, since our contract was up for renewal I bought one each for our family of four. So, as of two days ago, there are four new Sprint Hero users in our household. Given our new toys, we sometimes find time to speak to each other :-)Anyway, what this does mean is I am in the market for a bunch of accessories and wondered if folks had recommendations for a good source. I am looking for a holster (simple horizontal design in black or something). I don't want a "clip-in" design since I prefer the flap that just falls over the phone. My wife and kids won't go for the holster design :-) So, we are probably looking at either a soft or hard "shell".
I'd be interested in why folks prefer one over the other (soft shell vs. hard shell). The kids will also look for some striking designs, which we need anyway since right now we have four identical looking phones. With my WinMo phones I never bothered with screen protectors (or ended up regreting that decision). Touch wood, I have owned such phones for 4/5 years and never had a situation where I wished I had a screen protector.I will be buying an additional car charger cable (have one already).Beyond those things, I'd be interested in any other suggested accessories since I want to buy all this stuff together. So, any suggestions for this, plus a recommended place to buy this.

So my EVO was damaged..well the back-light does not come on anymore(I think due to moisture).I've tried RICE and other Drying technique...no fix So 'm gonna put in a claim.Knowing I will probably not have a phone for a little bit, I bought a used Hero for a backup phone.(It will do for now, got it cheap). It came with the latest .6 Patched rom.I downgraded to .5 and rooted it.What's a good flash rom to try with 2.1 fixes wifi and mostly everything working? As most I wanted my phone a little bit faster/cleaner and more control(why I rooted). I still do like some HTC things but not all of it, can I install some of it back when I flash to a new Rom? I'm sorta new to this and first time Rooting. I'm still not sure how you flash new Rom.

I have been able to find online Hero instructions in PDF, but wondering if there are any good online instructions that might also include video. I am getting a Hero next week and will need all the help I can get in figuring out how to use it.
By the way, does anyone know of a good car charger for the Hero?

I have recovered several water damaged phones and thought maybe this could help someone else. If its a toilet or some kind of non-chlorinated water, your phone most likely can recover. First shake it out as best as you can. If it is not off turn it off. Put it in a bowl of rice for about 12 hours. (just with the back off and the battery removed) then disassemble your phone as far as you can.
Take all pieces and set in the sun (preferably outside, unless you live in a humid climate) Seriously do not try to reassemble for 2 days! If you turn it on and any part is wet, you take the risk to short something out. Reassemble it. At least it works for me!

I just got a new 8gb memory card and want to dump a bunch of music to my Hero, but the music player seems lacking in many respects (functionally) despite looking nice (aesthetically). Has anyone tried other players that both work well and look stylish? sidenote - I was unable to format my memory card with it plugged into my network printer due to not having an adapter, but when the card is mounted and the hero is connected through usb it is reported as FAT32 in the open window. Do I need to worry about formatting? I wasn't sure if there would be any performance gain by doing so. Its a Transcend 8gb class 6.

So I expected this as I have friends with iPhones and I see it on their phones. Smudges! I hate smudges! So normally I just wipe it clean with a microfiber and it looks pretty good, however that does not always remove all the oils caught on the screen. I would think that over time, the oils sitting on the screen will end up degrading the screen or make it look nasty later on. I am wanting to clean it and not sure what to use. I have a cleaning kit we use on the document scanners at work. It has microfiber pads and a cleaning chemical which after reading the ingredients is just isopropyl rubbing alcohol.I heard the HTC Hero has a special coating on it that keeps it resistant to scratches and makes smudges easier to clean. My concern is that the isopropyl alcohol will beat up that coating. So after beating around the bush...the question is, what is the best way to do a good deep cleaning of the screen?

Any one have/know where to look for a good windshield mount for the hero? I'm specifically looking for one that will hold the phone in landscape mode so I can use the google turn-by-turn navigation (thanks for 2.1 flipz!!!). Most of the universal mounts seem extremely bulky and also only hold the phone in portrait mode.

I am new to android development and have been playing around with the tutorials offered at developer.android.com.I don't have a problem with projects I create from scratch, but when I start a project from the android sample code provided at android.com or from any other android project, I can never seem to get the bugs out to even run the thing. For example, when loading up the NotePad sample in the android-7 package of samples.would like a general solution, something more global bc this is occurring whenever I pull in anyone's source code from outside.kind of frustrated because I feel that I am spending too much time working out these kinks and not being able to study other people's code against how it performs in the emulator.

Im still trying to get a good feel for what i am doing before i go and root my phone and flash a custom rom. my last real question is i see so many different custom roms people are using. where can i find all these to put on my phone. also i am on 2.1 do i have to use a 2.something custom rom or can i use any custom rom. im at about an 95% user ability as far as using my phone and computer. i have never hacked/ flashed/ altered anything like a phone or computer or video game system. i have always just used as is. i wanna try this becuase i have read i can go back and go stock on this if i cant do it or dont like the results.

The app store tells you the application that you can download, but it's not clear which one has a widget you can use. Is there a website that people are going for these things, or is it just hit-and-miss?

If you're like a lot of Android users, you're obsessed with battery life and probably require a percentage widget. If you don't use a battery life widget, this probably isn't for you. I used to use Curve Fish's battery life widget which, in my initial testing months ago, didn't seem to affect battery life so I kept it and didn't think much about it.
My brother-in-law showed me a percentage indication that goes over the battery icon in the status bar on his Evo 4G. I found this hack for the Hero:
[PORT] Display Percent Battery Left within Battery Icon - Fresh 2.1.2+ - xda-developers
It adds the percentage remaining on top of your existing battery gauge in the status bar. Yes, root is required for this. At the time of writing this, I am at 14h 20m since unplugged and have 69% remaining. I would typically be between 47-53% remaining by this time. That equates to 3.5% drain per hour improved to 2.2% drain per hour. Which then comes out to around 60% increase in battery life without the loss of any features.
