Android :: Debugging Other People Source Code In Eclipse / ADT Plug-in Might Not Be Functioning Properly

Jul 2, 2010

I am new to android development and have been playing around with the tutorials offered at developer.android.com.I don't have a problem with projects I create from scratch, but when I start a project from the android sample code provided at android.com or from any other android project, I can never seem to get the bugs out to even run the thing. For example, when loading up the NotePad sample in the android-7 package of samples.would like a general solution, something more global bc this is occurring whenever I pull in anyone's source code from outside.kind of frustrated because I feel that I am spending too much time working out these kinks and not being able to study other people's code against how it performs in the emulator.

Android :: Framework Source Level Debugging In Eclipse

Jun 17, 2010

the Java sources for the Android framework are available at source.android.com. Can I download and feed them to Eclipse so that I can step into framework methods while debugging? Better yet, does anyone know of an Eclipse plug-in that would get them from Android Git automatically as needed?during debugging, I can step through the framework code; I can see local variables by their declared names, and line numbers as well. It seems like the debug info is already there - only the source file is missing. While I can open it in parallel and watch the execution unfold, the question of version matching remains. Of many versions of the class file in Git, how do I pick one that matches whatever is running on the device (or emulator)? This is more of a Git navigation question - how do I pick up the very version of the file that went into Android release, say, 2.2?

Android :: Debugging Native Code (C++) Using Gdb With Eclipse / Is It Possible?

May 24, 2010

I have some piece of code which uses JNI. I can debug code wrote in Java directly in Eclipse (using ADT). I even have a script, which help me debug native code with gdb. However this is not very comfortable way for doing this.Is it possible to configure Eclipse to use gdb (I guess gdbserver) for debbuging android native applications? Do you know where I could find any description of this?

Android :: Debugging In Android Open Source System Code

Mar 4, 2010

I am a platform developer and want to know how I can debug through the Android System code. I am making changes to the WindowManagerService and see a lot of statements like: (DEBUG_FOCUS) Log.v(TAG, "Clearing focused app, was " + mFocusedApp). My question is, how do I take advantage of these logs? I am using Eclipse on Ubuntu 9.10 and I have no idea how to actually debug this code.

Android :: Generate Java Source Code In Eclipse?

Jun 2, 2010

Does anyone know what approach one can take to automatically generate Java source code, from for example an xml or json file, in eclipse? One great example of what I am thinking of doing is what Google Android sdk does: they have an R class generated automatically from the resources. Every time a resource file is saved in Eclipse R class is automatically regenerated.

UPDATE: Example:
In the text (xml or json file) I have the following:
<tags>
<tag id="ALPHA">
<description>The first alpha tag.</description>
<value>231232</value> </tag> <tag id="BETA">
<description>This is the beta tag.</description>
<value>231232</value> </tag>

Then in my generated java class, say R I would have something like:
R.tags.ids.ALPHA //refers to an enum value for example
R.tags.values.ALPHA //refers to final int with avlue 231232
R.tags.descriptions.ALPHA //refers to the String with description

Jelly Bean :: Screen Isn't Functioning Properly?

Feb 11, 2014

It's been just 8 hours or less, the android phone never dropped from my hand and it never got any physical damage. The screen started to go crazy in the morning when I woke up, the screen wasn't working properly and it was crazy, later I hit the power button three times then the screen started to function. And at the lunch time it started again and now I can't use the screen. The notification bar (or something you pull to use wifi) isn't working. I can't pull it down to use Bluetooth or WiFi or Mobile Data (I don't have SIM yet). Well, it never happened like this before (even if it happened it caused me less damaged). The screen went crazy, even if I wasn't touching this thing the screen was functioning all by itself. It's Android 4.3 and it's latest update for my phone and the next OS is releasing next month.

Phone: Sony Xperia Z (C6602).
Has 3G but no 4G and I never used 3G network.

Why is my phone's screen not working properly? Do I need to use function reset to use it again?

Motorola Droid X :: Search Button Not Functioning Properly?

Nov 7, 2010

I couldn't find anything on this so here we go.We all have the hard button for "Search".is it possible to have it search EVERYTHING but not give you Google suggestions first? (I can uncheck Google in the settings, but I want those suggestions as well, just not to clutter the top of the search) Let's say I want to find a Pizza place down the street from me.It's very possible it's already in my contacts, so when I type in "Johnny G's", I'd rather see any possible contacts first, and google searches after. But instead I get all google and youtube suggestions first and have to scroll through a long list to see if the contact is in my phone. This is the same for Songs and Artists as well.ALSO, anybody have a problem using the search button in Landscape?I type in something, then hit the back button to drop the keyboard, and it returns me back to the home screen. This works for dropping the keyboard in text messages because it's quicker than Holding the menu button.

HTC Desire :: Bottom Half Of Screen Not Functioning Properly

Aug 2, 2010

I've just come to notice a problem with my desire, which I believe to be fairly long standing. For quite a long time I've been thinking that scrolling down lists/webpages/in apps etc has been quite stuttery, the wierd thing being that if you flick the list/page/whatever and let go (ie let the momentum take it) it's a lot smoother. I noticed today that when I'm scrolling with my finger on the top half of the screen it's actually really smooth, but as soon as my finger reaches the halfway point on the screen it starts to stutter. The stuttering isn't random, it seems like there's a grid of sensitivity on the screen, so it only catches up every 5mm or so (it feels like there's about 15 points of sensitivity horizontally on the screen). To test it I first downloaded the multitouch test app (as it purely reads from the driver where the touches are being detected and displays it on the screen). It still happened. I then downloaded a free drawing app, which seems to accentuate the problem, as when my finger reaches the midpoint of the screen it stops drawing altogether!I imagine it's probably a hardware problem as it's been happening for ages (only just recognised though) and during that time I've installed a debranded rom and then updated to froyo.Has anyone else noticed anything similar? I'll try and get a video on youtube to show the problem at some point. Any advice of things to try or should i just call T-Mobile support?

HTC Incredible :: Installing New Boot Animation / Not Functioning Properly

Oct 24, 2010

OK, relatively seemingly simple question...

Have downloaded a new Bootanimation.zip and accompanying audio file from XDA devs website.

Now...can't seem to get it to function properly. WHERE do I put these files? I put them in the /local/data folder and it used the stock VZW boot animation when I rebooted.

Do I need to RENAME the file? Or do I just have it placed in the wrong location?

Android :: Stepping Through Android Source Code In Eclipse

Oct 3, 2009

I've followed the steps described in issue 979
(http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=979)
to get the Android 1.6 source to appear in Eclipse and it kinda works.

I've downloaded the 1.6 source archive provided by a commenter in the issue, unzipped it and copied the contents in SDKROOT/platforms/android-1.6/sources (the sources folder didn't exist, I've created it). Then I made a test app and put a breakpoint in onCreate() of my Activity. I stepped into and, indeed, I could see the source of the Activity class. Then, on the next line, setContentView(), stepped again into and I could see again the Activity source code (for the getWindow() method). Then stepped again into and I could see it tries to call PhoneWindow.setContentView() but for that I couldn't see the source code. I even tried to add manually the folder where PhoneWindow.java is to the source lookup path and the source appears briefly then it disappears and "Source not found." is displayed. Any ideas why this behavior and what to do to change it? Also, could Google provide an official android-src.jar for the 1.5 and 1.6 SDK's?

Android :: Eclipse - Why Additional Plugin Break Plug-in

Oct 27, 2010

I had Eclipse running with the Android plug-in and I decided to add the Emacs plug-in. I downloaded and it worked. Then I decided to go back to the Eclipse key bindings and the Android plug-in disappeared. I could not update it, because Eclipse said it was installed, but it was not showing up in the menu.

I had to re download Eclipse, and reinstall the plug-in.

Why don't different plug-ins cooperate? I had the same issue when I tried to download the Blackberry plug-in alongside the Android plug-in (in different workspaces) and that also did not work. The only solution is to have two separate Eclipse each with a different plug-in.

Motorola Droid X :: Power Source Plug Into USB - Status Discharging

Jul 25, 2010

When I plug in the micro-usb plug into the droid x it doesn't seem to charge the batteries and I have to unplug the A/C wall plug and replug it before it will start charging. I have looked at the status when I first plug in the USB port into the droid x and it says "power source plugged into USB" and then status is discharging. This doesn't seem normal to me, and I don't see why I have to unplug and replug the A/C plug everytime. Is there some chip which is just not registering correctly? Do I need to go to a verizon store and get it checked out?

Android :: Debugging With Eclipse On HTC Evo

Oct 16, 2010

I've turned on USB debugging.I have the latest HTC Sync and android SDK components.I'm using Eclipse 3.5 on windows XP. I'm running Android 2.2, and am asking for 2.1 as the minimum in the debugger.I work in Eclipse/Java just about every day, and have for several years.I'm even writing an Eclipse plugin at work as I type this neither Eclipse nor Java are new to me by quite a stretch. When I start a debug session for the "Skeleton App" sample project, I can see my Evo, and the activity launches (with any freshly saved changes), should I select it.I have tried different android connection types (charge only, disk drive, HTC Sync, and USB tethering) to no avail. I've tried Eclipse 3.6 for a bit before yielding to the inevitable and reinstalling 3.5. I monkeyed with the emulator for a while but ran into a different set of issues (I had to reboot the emulator every time I wanted to make a change... Eclipse's auto-build/hot-swap has me spoiled). Is there something I can add to (or remove from) the AndroidManifest.XML to deal with this? A magical incantation perhaps? Must I pray towards San Jose three times a day on a rug woven from kernel gurus' vast and scruffy beards? Is my Evo not Kosher? Must I be "sky clad" while debugging? Shall I teach my laptop to genuflect?

Android :: Eclipse Totally Freak Out When Plug More Than One Phone In At A Time?

Mar 29, 2010

Is it normal for my Eclipse to totally freak out when I plug more than one phone in at a time?

Either my Hero or my Droid work fine solo, but if I try both at the same time they both become unrecognised and I have to then restart Eclipse (2 minutes of waiting) before I can go back to using just one phone. Kinda sucks having to unplug and re-plug phones all the time. I have 8 USB ports and no specific combination I can find seems to help.

Plugging in more than one phone also crashes my DDMS.

Android :: What's Wrong With Debugging In Eclipse?

Mar 31, 2010

I've obviously been spoiled by Visual Studio, because although I'm just learning Android and the Eclipse environment, debugging apps in Eclipse is becoming a serious detriment to further development. And then, when it executes it under the debugger, I will get a full screen of useless debug info, non of which actually points me to the specific line containing the error. The stackTrace is null within the exception ('e') info tree, and it simply states a message stating 'ArithmeticException'. (that's nice, how about you point me in the direction of where you found it!?)I've looked all over the screen and am baffled that this IDE can't get this right. Does developing with Eclipse resort everyone back to 1991 with printf() like logging at every interval then to track down bugs? Seriously. Is there a configuration or plug-in that I'm missing to help with this?I haven't tested this case with XCode, but if the iPhone dev. IDE handles this more like Visual Studio, then no wonder the Android marketplace has so few apps.
