Sprint HTC Hero :: Battery And Usage Statistics

Dec 18, 2009

I've been searching all over this forum as well as the internet on how people are using their HERO and the battery performance they're getting out of it. I've seen answers from 9 hrs with heavy usage to 36 hours with minimual usage. That's about all the detail I've been able to find. (Maybe I'm just not good at searching?)With that, I decided to do a little tracking of my own. I logged my usage and battery performance over a 27 hour period and thought I'd share it with the community. Not sure if this is even helpful but maybe it'll provide some sort of baseline for others to compare against.I recorded the battery level in % based on the stock battery meter, the time I recorded the battery level and any activity that occured between the current time and the previous time recording. For example, between 7:00AM and 10:19AM the battery dropped by 10% and I had received 2 emails, 2 calendar reminders went off and I had surfed the web for about 10 minutes.

Android :: How Can We Determine Battery Usage Statistics Per Application?

Nov 4, 2010

I am having trouble finding class or API in android documentation which can help me get battery usage statistics per application. I have read PowerManager class and BatteryManager but they are of no use .Though I can find applications like PowerTutor that do give you battery usage statistics per application, so I think its technically possible?

Sprint HTC Hero :: Excessive Camera App Battery Usage

Jun 5, 2010

Ever since I installed the Android 2.1 update I have noticed a significant increase in my battery depletion when I am using the camera app. This is even if I am using the camera app for a very short period of time. For example, I might take three or four shots in the course of two minutes and my battery drain would be on the order of 7% - 8%. This is way more battery drain from the camera app than I ever witnessed when I was using it with Android 1.5.

I also noticed on the battery status screen, where you can see how much percentage of your total battery life that various apps and system processes are using, that the camera app skyrockets up to over 90% of the total usage every time I use it for a few minutes.

Android :: Is There App That Will Display Phone Usage Statistics?

Jul 23, 2010

I'm looking for an app or widget that will give me a breakup of each category of application running on my phone.I own a Samsung Galaxy S running Android OS v2.1. (The phone itself has a stock "Settings -> About Phone -> Battery use" report, but that is rudimentary and doesn't report all types of usages.) If this question has already been answered, I'd be grateful for a link (couldn't find one by searching the forum).

HTC Hero :: Changing LCD DPI Settings - Affect Battery Usage Or CPU

Aug 23, 2010

So I changed my DPI setting to 150 since in launcher pro I use 5 rows instead of 4 so it doesn't overlap etc. And wanted to ask if changing the DPI setting may affect the battery usage (recalculating screen) or CPU (making it slower) or the games will lag? etc.

Changed it back, I think was lagging and the text boxes were smaller not on the whole page. And the confirmations had green lines in the middle.
How I did it:
1. Root Explorer , mount R/W in system
2. Open in text editor.
3. Edit the build.prop line with ro.sf.lcd_density=150 and save the file
4. mount R/O and reboot

Still if someone knows something about the battery usage and cpu etc. So I know in future if I should play around with this one.

HTC Droid Eris :: Weird Battery Use Statistics

My battery usage shows 96% camera, 2% cell standby, and 2% phone idle in the last 8 hours since I last charged the phone.I haven't used the camera since Saturday (2 days ago) and it isn't running when I click on the application or running services. Also find it weird that there is no usage for the Android O/S.I am not rooted or leaked and am on 2.1 with the first update but not the second update yet and camera is stock. Any idea what is up and how to fix it?Battery life appears to be around normal with 40% left (usually get 10-12 hours).

Sprint HTC Hero : RAM/ROM Usage For Certain Programs

Oct 24, 2009

After pretty much a day of doing nothing on the phone except a few texts (GPS and WIFI were on all day), I got home and started playing with the phone. It got SOOOOOOOOOO slow (and I'm not nitpicking, I'm talking WinMo-hang-slowness....believe me, I understand a little bit of lag, but this was insane!) so I checked the Applications and Manage Applications. Now I know everyone's first answer is "get a task manager, etc" but I am not going to give into that, because I believe it'll cause more problems, or at least potential for more problems, by adding more variables to the equation if something goes wrong. I was looking at some of the applications that seem to be using quite a bit of RAM/ROM and had a question for the community:

The biggest 3 applications were:

Mail - 34.80 MB (34.25 MB Data + 556 KB Cache) and using 6.78 MB Ram
Contacts Storage - 4.09 MB total (all data) and 11.56 MB RAM
com.android.providers.calendar - 2.78 MB total (all data) and 11.02 RAM

What does everyone else's look like? I know I'm not going to be touching the Contacts Storage or com.android.providers.calendar stuff, but what happens if I clear my data and cache in mail? I have it hooked to an Exchange Server at work. What exactly gets cleared, and will that help with any of my lag? Do these numbers look pretty representative of everyone else's?

Sprint HTC Hero :: 2.1 Battery Not Charging Fix

May 21, 2010

Today I took my Sprint HTC Hero to a Sprint store to upgrade to Android 2.1. In my opinion, I don't think it was worth upgrading the software. I really liked the options in 1.5 more especially the camera app. Any way, after getting home, my batter was almost dead. I pluged the micro usb cable into my Hero and attempted to charge it via an a/c charger. It started to charge from 10% slowly but then only went to 22% and stopped and stayed there for 2 hours. The back of my Hero was REALLY hot. I shut off the phone and let it cool and tried again. Same thing happened. I noticed that when you are using the phone and charging it in 2.1, the battery starts to die and it gets hot even quicker.Shutting the phone off and charging didnt help. What did and is still working, is putting the phone in Airplane mode, killing unnecessary running apps/widgets with the Advanced Task Killer by ReChild and then proceding to charge the phone. After leaving it like this for 30 minutes, the back of the phone was no longer hot and the battery percent went up from 22% to 33%, it is continuing to charge now.If you are having this issue, I suggest you use this method to charge your phone until the bug is fixed. This is such a pain because if your using Sprint Navigation in the car and your battery is about to die,you cannot charge it.The phone will remain on after using a car charger to charge it but the battery percent wont increase and it will get really hot.I guess we have to charge the phone before every use from now on? Android 2.1 is a lot of bugs. They made us wait this long for it and they have still failed to fix the major issues that were supposed to be fixed with this update IMO.

Sprint HTC Hero :: How To Get A Better Battery Life?

So, I rooted and installed fresh 1.1 a few days ago. The question I have is how is everyone getting better battery life, because mine has not changed, even a little? The speed has increased, but it's nothing to write home about. I guess I would like to hear from other fresh users to see what you have done to get more speed and better battery life and your overall experience with fresh so far. Don't get me wrong I love the look and it is faster. I'm just wondering if there is more that I can do to make it better?

Mar 24, 2010

My phones battery died last night and now my phone can do almost nothing. It will turn on but I have no signal just a x and anytime I try to use almost anything I get a force close error. Everything from trying to dial a number to opening google maps. It seems like almost everything included with the phone will not work. I tried a couple of games just to check and they seem to work ok. Does anyone know how to get my phone working again or if a reset will fix this, or do I need to take it to Sprint? My phone is not rooted and has died before with no ill effects.

Sprint HTC Hero :: GPS And Battery Life

Mar 1, 2010

A month or so back I started running mine with GPS toggled ON all the time. (For apps to find a lost Hero it seemed the only effective way to find it was if GPS was on). GPS is not powered (or maybe very low powered?) UNLESS the GPS Symbol is showing at top of screen?

I've noticed NO difference in battery life with GPS toggled ON vs OFF over the last month. GPS (when toggled ON) appears to be actually turned on or off by particular Apps that use it.
Anyone? Am I correct?

It seems to be "common knowledge" and I think Android even says to toggle it OFF to save battery life but this seems to be not true?

I DO have an App that does turn GPS on but does NOT turn it off when I exit, which does drain the battery until I manually correct, which could be a problem, but I do see the GPS icon so I know it's on and draining.

Sprint HTC Hero :: New Battery Makes Phone VERY Hot

Mar 30, 2010

I've had my Hero for a few months now and it has been wonderful. However, the other night, the phone wouldn't charge all the way, so I unplugged it, restarted it, and charged it and it charged up to 90% through the night. Last night it only charged up to about 50% give or take. This morning at work, I plugged it in and instead of charging, it got extremely hot and then it died.

This afternoon, I took it to the Sprint store and they put in a new battery and the phone worked again, but it got REALLY hot again. I took it back in and they looked at it again and said the phone has definitely got a problem and the cause of this is water. It has been raining, but I don't recall ever having any water get in the phone - just the occasional rain drop hits the screen and I wipe it off. I never keep it out in the rain. They are saying I'll have to do an insurance claim to replace it because of water damage. They say there are 4 water marks in the phone. I find this so hard to believe and don't like that they want me to spend $100 on a new phone.

Sprint HTC Hero :: Replacement Of Battery Cover

Dec 29, 2009

At complete fault of my own in a move I should have known better than to do, my phone decided to hang out for a few minutes on the bottom of my oven, face up, while it was on at 375F. The phone is actually surprisingly great - everything still works, makes calls, cam and rear speaker seem unaffected - but the back battery cover is messed up now. Because I'm optimistic and dumb, I went to Sprint to see if I could get a replacement door from them. No go. Then I checked HTC's website, and they don't seem to sell anything for this phone at all (exaggeration). Ultimately I plan to wrap my Hero in one of those jelly cases, but I already own one and I'm away on vacation and refuse to by another. Still, despite being wrapped up incognito, I'll be secretly bothered by my less-than-perfect phone, so I really want to order another one.

Sprint HTC Hero :: Wi-fi Battery Saving Method

Nov 2, 2009

I stumbled upon a new wi-fi setting yesterday that is fairly hidden and not mentioned in the manual at all, so I though I'd share it here.

First, a little background and explanation, then I will share my new findings with you all. It has been confirmed in other threads that the wi-fi radio uses considerably less power than the EV-DO 3G radio in the Hero. When you think about it, it's actually pretty simple because the signal only has to travel 100 or so feet for wi-fi, vs. several miles for the 3G radio. Whenever I'm at home or anywhere else with wi-fi, I always switch the wi-fi radio on, and have found that the battery lasts much longer. Whenever the phone is awake, and you're actively connected to a wi-fi network, it seems to shut the EV-DO radio down completely and rely solely on the wi-fi data for data. This has been confirmed as true, because there are some programs out there (i.e. Sprint TV) where you have to turn wi-fi off, because they will only access with the EV-DO radio. You obviously want to turn the wi-fi off whenever there are no networks around, because it will actively search for networks whenever it is on, and will run the battery down.

So, I noticed every time I would wake my phone up after I hadn't used it for a while, it would be using the EV-DO radio, and would take a few seconds to re-connect to my wi-fi network. I couldn't quite figure out why the phone would revert back to EV-DO when sleeping, then connect back to wi-fi only after waking the phone back up. Yesterday, I stumbled upon a new menu I hadn't seen before where you can change this behavior. Check this out.

Menu->Settings->Wireless Controls->Wi-Fi Settings->Press Menu Again->Advanced->Wi-Fi Sleep Policy

The description for this menu reads "Specify when to switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data."

Within this menu, there are three options.

"When screen turns off."
"Never when plugged in."
"Never."

The default setting is "When screen turns off." So, even with wi-fi enabled, whenever the screen turns off, your phone automatically reverts back to the EV-DO radio. As we all know, your phone is still transmitting data a good portion of the time, even when you're not using it. So, even with wi-fi turned on, the phone is still using the 3G radio to communicate while the screen is off.

I switched this menu setting to "Never" as of last night. This forces the phone to always use wi-fi whenever it is turned on, and you are connected to a network. Since then, whenever I wake up my phone it is still showing the wi-fi icon, and I haven't seen the EV-DO icon at all like I used to see for the first several seconds.

I was at home most of the day today, connected to my wi-fi network. I left the house twice for probably about 2 hours total, and I switched off wi-fi both times I left the house. I used the phone fairly lightly today, since we had a family day, but that still consisted of a good bit of browsing, some email usage, light texting, reading twitter updates every two hours, and half an hour playing a video game. Also, I always leave my GPS switched on as it never activates unless I open a program that requires it, and it always switches back off after I'm done. I took the phone off the charger at 9:30 this morning, and it is now 11:50 pm as I'm typing this. So, we're looking at over 14 hours today. The phone hasn't touched a charger since this morning, and I am sitting at 52% battery life, and I'm about to plug the phone in and go to bed.

I have never seen anywhere near this kind of battery life at the end of the day. I am usually below 15% after this kind of usage. I'm not sure if this was just a freak day, or what, but I really believe changing this one setting had a profound affect (effect?) on my battery life.
