This may seem like a really dumb question but I have been told several different things by several different people who should know. Does the Vibrant connect to a Wi-Fi and use it for data and calling? I have a Blackberry Curve at present and I have no reception inside my house. I connect my Curve to my Wi-Fi network and can do all data things and talk with zero dropped calls. I'm hoping to be able to do this with the Vibrant. If I can't I will have to consider another phone (I can't live with no reception in my house). I don't care if I can tether from it, I just need ot be able to use the Wi-Fi for data and calls on the handset.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi have the newest firmware and everything is fine and i did read the "how to's" before posting this. i'm on sprint and i've got unlimited everything. i tried the "internet sharing" thing when i plugged it in to my computer (all htc sync software and drivers installed) and i kept getting a data call failure so i thought sprint disabled that feature. i was messing with the wifi on my phone and i connected to my router, then when i plugged it in i tried the "internet sharing" option again this time it worked. but, as in the "how to" it doesn't have the little 3g symbol beside the clock. all it has it the wifi symbol. so, is my pc connected to the internet via my phones internet or my home internet?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was sitting around testing the PhoneTell app. I was calling my NON Google Voice phone number, the phone that receives GV calls and this is what i learned. Upon rejection of the phone call or if i miss the phone call it is automatically forwarding calls to my Google Voice Gmail account (voip)! Keep in mind I was NOT calling my Google Voice #. So upon rejection or missed call of your Normal number the call will be routed...and of course it will work as expected when actually calling your GV number.
This is astonishing and literally means no more missed calls. When I'm in a no signal zone it would seem like I don't have to go through the trouble of telling people my GV number as it will automatically route the call anyway?!
So I decided to actually try out Barnacle today, as I've had it installed for a couple days now. Set my options, started it, and connected with an older Acer laptop that a co-worker had at the office. Here are the speeds I got from the local San Diego, CA speedtest.net server...
5.13Mb down
1.37Mb up
Wow...that's phenominal for a mobile device!
I have been trying to find the answer to this question for a while and have found mixed opinions. Is it possible to use google voice to make wifi calls just like from the browser of a computer? I don't get it if you can call from a computer using wifi why can't I on my captivate?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI accidentally activated my wifi through the notification bar. As soon as it was activated, i simply tapped it again to shut it down, however, it failed to do so. All that happened was that the wifi had a blue color and off in the bottom. I tried turning it off through the power setting widget, it says that updating wifi. It was stuck like that until i restarted the phone.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI got my Vibrant yesterday and hooked it up to my WiFi (netgear g-router). Everything worked great for about 30 seconds. I was able to jump through a few pages and then it stops loading eventually I get a message with something to the effect of "cannot connect to server, please try again later". This is not word for word. I called t-mo support and they were not able to find anything so they are sending me a new Vibrant, but I have a feeling that this problem will persist. I read through different posts and found a few that listed this problem some suggested:
-Download the WiFi Fixer app from the android market
-Switch the router settings from B/G to just G (I don't remember what mine are set to now, but I'll try this out when I get home from work).
If I really have to switch my router settings, what will I do if I'm traveling and have to use a hotel's WiFi hotspot or something? Does anyone have any ideas about this? I have no problems with my WiFi on my MyTouch 3G, so I'm not sure if this is a Samsung issue or an Android issue either way, I either have to figure out a fix or get rid of the phone.
I'm looking to buy a Samsung Galaxy S (the Vibrant from T-mobile) without a plan and just use it over wifi. I'm incredibly interested in the Froyo update coming "soon," but was wondering if I'll be able to install it via wifi, or if I'll need to activate a plan in order to get it. Anyone know?

I have the same issue with 2 separate Vibrants, actually 3 Vibrants counting the one I took back.I have problems connecting to either the market or internet across multiple browsers while WiFi is on.With both phones, it seems this problem is intermittent and across different brands of routers at different locations.
An example is when I try to enter the market.I sometimes will get to the market home page but when I try to pull up my downloads it comes back with an error message saying connection failed.Once I turn off WiFi it works perfect in 3G, or if I leave WiFi on, go back to the home page and then try just a minute later it connects without a problem. To make matters even worse, the problem persists while using apps that connect to the internet such as The Weather Channel. The problem is very intermittent.Sometimes I have no problems connecting, while other times it won't connect at all until I turn WiFi off or even reboot the phone. Both phones behave the same way.I've gotten to the point now where I just leave WiFi turned off because it's so unreliable.I know it's not the WiFi signal strength either as it is just as likely to happen with the phone a few feet away from the router's antenna as it is when it's 50 feet away.
I am getting Samsung Vibrant to replace my wife's Behold II. She doesn't have a data plan but was able to use Wi-Fi to connect to internet with Behold II. I assume, that's the case with Vibrant too. Does any one know, is that's true? I am sure to get comments from few that what's the point of having smart phone without data plan but my wife doesn't need it and don't want it.

The speeds shown are remarkably different on downloads: computer 4.5ish (wireless g) Vibrant 1.0ish and very inconsistent. What gives?
On an unrelated matter ...does anyone know how to turn back on the haptic portion of the wakeup puzzle? Mine no longer works and I cannot find a setting for this issue.
Basically what the title says. The guy at Radioshack said I wouldnt have to purchase anything extra to have Wifi calling on my EVO. I need the wifi calling as I dont get service at my house.
View 17 Replies View RelatedI have T-Mobile, with the old Hotspot@Home billing feature that gives me unlimited UMA minutes (used to have two blackberries and used UMA a lot). I have really missed this with my Nexus One. With TMO rolling out Kineto's application for "WiFi Calling" I am trying to figure out what is possible for my Nexus One, currently at Android 2.2.1 (FRG85).Is the Kineto deal only going to be for TMO builds of Android? I have read that Kineto's business model is to not sell direct, hence no availability in the Market. Since my Nexus One gets its Android system updates independently, this would mean I can never get an update with Kineto built-in, right? If I were able to install Kineto, would it look like UMA to TMO so the calls would be covered under my unlimited H@H plan? Any bright ideas on how I can get WiFi Calling (the TMO supported plan that uses my TMO number, not some SIP implementation or Google Voice)? I prefer not to root, but if I have to root to get UMA, I will.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI just wanted to ask what types of solutions are most successful for calling and texting using a 3G/wifi connection.
I'm going to Canada tomorrow and Verizon said that 3G is included in my plan but regular texting/calling is extra when out of the country.
I want to be able to make/receive calls from my friends in Canada with me AND be able to communicate with friends still in the states without any of us incurring further charges.
My assumption is that I will need to utilize apps that work with Google Voice. I don't believe the native GV app handles texts or calls itself though.
I've seen GrooVe IP mentioned for VOIP style calling with Google Voice (gchat?).
I've seen Kakaotalk mentioned for texting, I want non-smartphone users to be able to text me too..
Has used a 3rd party SMS/MMS application (ie Handcent, GoSMS, Textra, 8sms, etc etc) to use send/receive MMS over WiFi Calling WITHOUT ANY DATA? I'm in an area where I can only use WFC, and all of my 3rd party SMS apps simply will not send or receive MMS over WiFi Calling without using the stock app.
And I repeat, NO DATA, no wifi = no service, so if you have a solution, make sure it's not quietly turning on data, sending the MMS, then going back to wifi, because that's not going to work as there is no cell service in this location.

View 6 Replies View RelatedOk, so I may be leaving the USA soon. I plan on unlocking my phone and going out of the country with it. I don't know how long I may be gone.maybe years, so here are a few questions.
1. I plan on going South Africa. According to this site, both the phone and 3g should work perfectly right? GSM World Coverage Map- GSM Country List by frequency bands
2. I have seen an app to unlock the Vibrant. It is by DaGentooBoy from XDA. Its called Samsung Galxy S Unlock. Would it be better for me to use this app or to just request T-Mobile to give me the unlock code. Are there any pros or cons for using either method.
3. If the OTA update or Froyo don't come out before I am gone, will I be able to get an OTA over wifi while I am in South Africa. Just to clarify, I will be using a local sim over there. I will discontinue from tmobile when I leave the US I know nothing of rooting. This is my first smartphone, so if possible I would be hesitant of doing any updates via the computer that requires me to loose all my info. I have too many apps and saved games and settings to download again so its just a scary thought of loosing it all.
4. Will google navigation work overseas. I have heard people say yes and no. I am hesitant to buy apps like co-pilot as they cost a lot and have mixed reviews, so I wanted to find out about this.
The galaxy s phones were made for high end games. I want to find and try all the high end games for android, so please post which games you found...Here are the high end games I've tried and what I think about them:
Asphalt HD from Gameloft. I really love this racing game. Its on par with racing games made for the psp. I hope they release an expansion pack with more cars/tracks/events. N.O.V.A from Gameloft. A pretty good fps. It kinda reminds me of halo. I wish there was more weapons and enemies/bosses. note: you cant get this game from the market, you have to buy from the gameloft website. Dungeon Hunter from Gameloft. A standard rpg. Im playing this right now. my thoughts so far is that its a pretty good rpg for a phone but pales in comparison to handheld console rpgs. note: you cant get this game from the market, you have to buy from the gameloft website. Hero of Sparta from gameloft. its a hack n slash game. this is the only game from the gameloft hd series that I didnt like so far. I havent tried the other 5 HD games from gameloft but I plan on doing so.
I really want to try all the high end games for android so please any games you have found

I was really hoping to save 55% off the cost of the Tmobile Gel Case but alas it was not to be. When my wife saw the case installed on the phone she said "what the heck?" That's because the case fits the Vibrant unevenly. And it doesn't wrap around the bezel fully.
Here is my review:
The Amzer "Silicone Skin Case" is completely unacceptable to me in terms of fit, feel and function. The Vibrant is a top of the line, expensive and amazing device deserving of quality accessories. This case is basically junk and not commensurate with the quality or value of the Vibrant.
First the fit: It slides onto the Vibrant easily enough (too easily in fact - it feels like it might fall off) and the cutouts are all lined up with the camera, USB, etc. However, the case barely fits around the bezel and it fits the face of the phone unevenly so you can see the bezel on one side but not the other side. The last point about the fit is that the phone feels like it could pop out of the case if you squeezed the sides; this is a very unsettling feeling. A case should make you feel more secure not less and it shouldn't detract from the quality appearance of this device.
Second, the feel: The case feels much too thin along the sides, the corners feel nice and thick as they should be to protect the phone. The sides however offer little in the way of protection. It just feels cheap and not nearly thick enough to offer much protection.
Third, the function: I bought a case to protect the phone from damage in the event it is dropped. I want protection around the bezel and the sides and back of the phone. The Amzer case only seems to protect the Vibrant on the corners where this case is thicker. I feel like if I dropped the phone and it landed on the side there would be little to prevent the phone from being damaged.
Needless to say I was disappointed when I tried the Amzer on my Vibrant this afternoon. So much so that I immediately called Amazon to arrange for its return. I have the Gel Case from Tmobile which by comparison is vastly superior although 55% more in price.
In this case you get what you pay for. And I do not want to skimp on protection a device as valuable as the Vibrant. Let's see, save $6 on a case for a $500 phone? No way, not when it's ugly when installed, feels cheap and insecure in the hand, and offers less protection. The Tmobile case fits snugly, wraps evenly around the bezel, is thicker to better protect the phone in the event of an impact.
I give this case 1 out 5 stars. The Tmobile Gel Case gets 4.5 stars.

Someone confirmed it there. This would make this the only other Tmobile branded android phone to work with the cheap data plan other than the Behold 2.
For how long who knows, the behold 2 has been going on for years, but tmo, nor anyone really cared about that phone
Is there any way that I can create backups for the vibrant that work without installing and reinstalling the voodoo lag fix everytime? I know that clockwork recovery doesn't work with voodoo installed, and messes up my phone if I try it.
