I am on the cusp of leaving my BB Curve and buying either an HTC Hero or the Samsung Moment. Both have their pluses and negatives.However, something I hear in both forums is to save battery turn off GPS. If you do that how does "Emergency Location" and/or "E911" service work? Aren't those dependent on GPS?

So when I bought this phone I was told GPS will work without service. I'm in Asia right now for 9 months and it doesn't. From my research, I think the problem is that agps does a call to verify that local service is available before it will kick the regular gps in. Forgive my crude tech speak, but I imagine there must be some sort of workaround. Is there any way to fake the phone into thinking it has a sprint service signal or is there a way to turn off agps? There must be some sort of hack I can do. I hope someone can give me something, this phone is an expensive brick here. And no, turning on airplane mode enabling wifi and gps location services don't help. I've tried every possible combination, I can't use the GPS without the phone verifying the sprint network."you need a network connection to get the api call to work. Once its running you don't need the network for it to keep running. A guy in the Droid forum told me that.
He says that if you turn your phone on in another country the api would not get some sort of response (license) from the network and the gps would not work"
I've just started noticing this about 3 days ago. I have to enter in the locked phone "puzzle" and I've noticed that the emergency button wasn't there. Im wondering if I'm the only one or am is it just my phone? I've noticed that this phone can be a bit buggy at times! Note: I have not had the update done on this phone. The only big recent app that I've installed is handcent.
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy app which was working on 2.1 and earlier version fails to run properly in 2.2. It relies on the location but I do not get any error message. However under DDMS /logCat, I see a message saying: Error message while getting the location address: Reason: this service is not available. This is coming more as an information message rather than an exception or error. The process that is printing it out is System.out. Note that I did everything possible ( I can think of) to upgrade the app to run in android 2.2. The API version was changed to 8.

Let's start from first: I bought a t-mobile desire from someone. when I got it, it was rooted and an official htc middle east rom flashed on it (...and unrooted).Both seller and me have a local sim card (Not t-mobile) but it worked for him and not for me.It displays a "Limited Service", "Emergency Calls Only" message. when I search for operators it list my operator but when I choose that android can't register on it.
1. I rooted it again and flashed LeeDroid rom on it but no success
2. Seller did a hard reset before giving it to me (I guess it generated the problem)
3. Sim card is correct
4. Seller is not scam!

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a moment as I traded my Hero in to give it a try since my hero ended up with dead lines on the screen.For the life of me, I cannot get wireless or GPS location services to work.If I use wireless, google maps puts me somewhere over in China and if I try GPS, it never locks.In sprint nav with wireless, I am in Virgina (I'm in Michigan) and GPS never locks. I tried the trick I learned on the hero to disable wireless services until I get a GPS lock at least once, but even that didn't work.

We have spent hours on the phone with Sprint support and TelNav (the supplier of Sprint Nav) and they told us that the hardware on my Moment is faulty and to replace the phone! The problem with the Nav is that it sometimes does not register my location on the road, gives incorrect directions, and sometimes the correct direction too late (i.e. after we already missed the turn). All the necessary settings on phone are on: GPS and Wifi - which is what we were told.So - does anyone have a fully functioning Sprint Nav on their Samsung Moment phone updated to CL14?

I have the correct bios (I've used several bioses to make sure my specific bios file wasn't corrupted) and I also tried several .bin PS1 roms. When I try to start the game, all I get is a couple of seconds of black screen before it returns to the rom selection screen.
Has anyone gotten it to work? If so, how? If not, is it because of power specs? Is it possible to get around it?
I updated to 2.1 yesterday and couldn't get the Swype I used on 1.5 to work. I downloaded 2 other Swype files. One from somewhere else but all it did was FC and another posted here but the resolution wasn't right so all it did was press the wrong keys. Can anyone point me to a Swype that works fluently with 2.1?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI got CL14 on the 19th after having my moment for a couple months they fixed the battery gauge! However, I got a new issue with CL14. I work at a job that is in a bomb proof area. I have always left my phone on in the area even though I usually get no service, sometimes one bar.
The reason I leave the phone on is because sometimes I am in there for 2 minutes, sometimes for 3 hours between breaks so with the long boot times it sucks turning on and off and and off (especially if I am only in there a minute). I also cant switch it off while I am in there since I would get in trouble for taking it out of my pocket.
Eveything had been fine until CL14, now when I go into that room with little service after about 1-2 hours the phone battery it totally dead. The phone is very hot to the touch as well. at first i though it was the screen was somehow on, but I have been checking it every few minutes and its not. Basically my hunch is something changed in the CPU usage when the phone is searching for service with the CL14 update that causes the battery to run out of juice (for real this time) very very fast. Any setting I can change? Most regular cells go into a "power save" mode when there is no service, the moment does not.

Cl05, battery gauge, but no problem for months at my work with no service.
CL14 installed now battery is being completely drained from full to shut down in 1-2 hours, in low/no service areas, phone getting very hot.
I had a moment in the beginning and took it back,got a hero had massive problems and finally got my hero replaced with another moment that was brand new.I just got it like 2-3 days ago and its having the same issues that i had on 1.5 when i had it the first time.I had it replaced when i had it the first time and same issue.I have 2.1 now and the battery life is still horrible like dropping not long after taking it off the charger without using it but biggest problem is that the phone will tell me i have no service and it will have an x up above where the bars should be and i have to remove the battery and put it back in before it will work again.The data does the same thing and i can turn the phone off and back on for that and it will work again.Does this happen to anyone else??Its very frustrating!!Also the wifi wont connect.It just says it is unable to connect but it was just working and my laptop works wirelessly so i know that its not my router or anything with my connection.

My PC sees the phone as Android not Samsung mobile device. I can't seem to find a way for it to get the drivers. I wanted to try a different ROM then the one I'm running now.
View 13 Replies View Relatedi have tried searching and waiting to see if anyone else is having this problem but apparently i am the only one. no matter what i do i can't get any of the font packs to work in open home. i have tried all the free ones on the market. when i go to menu>more>text font & color>edit text (doesnt matter which) i get a force close. does anyone have a fix for this or can tell me what i am doing wrong? those are the instructions in the app but maybe i am missing something.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI got my moment about one month. I noticed the alarm clock sometime worked, sometime not. Especially set up run time over 5 or 6 hours. If it passed the setup time, the alarm clock didn't run, but the setup time still showed on the locked screen (before you unlock your phone). It should show the next run time, not the last run time. I use advanced task killer to kill everything before I go to bed. Is that related?
