Samsung Galaxy S :: Text Messages Being Converted To MMS / Stop It?
Nov 5, 2010My wife has noticed that when she does a text message, once it has gone over a certain character limit (which seems to be about 50 characters), when she hits send a message comes up saying 'Converting to MMS' (or something like that). On all our other phones, if you do a long text like this it just sends the message as mutliple texts instead of converting to mms.
What this means is that as it goes as mms instead of a text message, she gets charged for it (she gets unlimted texts on her plan, but this doesnt include mms).
Is this normal with the SGS, or is there a way to stop it converting to mms?

Sep 9, 2010With handcent I have had no trouble on other android phones with simply splitting texts over the limit, but I am getting the dreaded "the proceeding message.

Nov 8, 2013Last year when I was living in South Korea I bought a Samsung Galaxy S2 and I had no problems with it but since i've been back in the UK every time I text it converts my message into a MMS even though i'm only sending about 80 characters. It's really annoying and means I can only send a few words on each text hah
I've read up online and ive tried downloading some SMS apps such as handcent etc but nothing is working I can't afford to buy a new phone currently, desperately trying to fix this.

Dec 26, 2013My wife and I decided to join the 21st Century so our grandchildren can text to us and we purchased two Samsung Galazy S4 on Verizon network These are our first smart phones. Neither phone is able to send or receive text messages. The phones spin for awhile and then finally displays a failure message. I read one suggestion to turn off WiFi but that didn't work. No other problems have been found so far.

Jul 28, 2010This one mostly goes out to my fellow Swedish forum dwellers but if anyone else has a solution please chime in. My brother just got himself a Galaxy S, partly on my recommendation. He bought it from a Swedish (we presume) web shop but he seems to be lacking Swedish characters from they key map. He is not using Swype but the Samsung keyboard, he changed the phones language layout to Swedish but that wasn't enough. If you check the keyboard language, its set to "automatic" but he cannot - apart from me, set it to Swedish. This seems very strange, is it an import phone? And if so - can he add the Swedish language somehow?

Dec 1, 2010So my girlfriend is having an issue with her phone. I don't see it being an issue with mine but it might be something else. She is receiving non-alpha numeric characters in her text messages. So far shes gotten it from me and one of her other friends not knowing what to say she called it "caligraphy". Anyways, I am on Metro and her friend is on Verizon. I'd figure its a CDMA issue but she is on a Samsung Moment on Sprint which is also CDMA so idunno.
To me they send fine, but to her some of the texts she receives come in all garbled. Not sure whats going on, anyone got any ideas? Her phone is unrooted, stock, and like a week and a half ago had a factory reset done. Its 2.1 android. In this screenshot I asked her to forward me the "jibberish." She had tried to do it several times earlier but i never got the messages, this time i got it so heres a screenie for you all.
General :: Samsung Galaxy Nexus Won't Send Special Characters Anymore
Jul 28, 2013Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I could send special characters (i.e: �, �, �, �, �, ect) in text messages. Then, it wouldn't anymore. I believe my phone updated to Jelly Bean before it stopped, so it may be connected to that. When I try to send a message with any type of special character in it, the message simply won't send. No matter if I use the messenger than came on the phone, or the one I installed (Handcent). I still get the message just not sending. It'll send once I take the characters out of the message, though. I can normally receive messages containing special characters, but they sometimes it shows up as squares.
Mostly, I want to know if I can fix it. I understand that it may be the update, which I'll have to wait out. Or that it could be the phone itself, which in that case I'd just have to wait till I can upgrade again. It's just very annoying not being able to send accents or special characters. Especially to my Spanish only speaking friends.

I got my Samsung Galaxy Portal yesterday and when I get a new text it makes a sound but I don't get a display on my screen. Jun 3, 2010Sometimes when I receive messages it makes the notification sound and will show message in notification bar but the text of the message will not appear in the text thread. Used to happen every once in a while, now doing it multiple times a day. I use Handcent but I doubt that is the problem because the messages dont show up in the regular messaging either. Just want to see if i am alone with this problem.

She has been having a problem where, occasionally, people that she sends text message to tell her that that the message arrives with non alpha/numeric characters and instead are either (a) blank, or (b) filled with special characters and the original message is not sent.
I found a thread that says blank messages may be caused by draft items, but nothing about special characters.

Jan 23, 2010I don't know if anyone else tried/got this message but I have the stock messaging app and accidentally sent over the 160 character limit and instead of getting the verizon message that says it only sends the first 160 characters to non-verizon customers. I got a message that read "messages sent to non-verizon customers over 160 characters are sent as plain text in multiple segments". Looks like verizon is now splitting text messages for us. Just thought I would pass this along to everyone. Only problem I have seen so far is every time you go over the 160 limit verizon sends you that message every single time kinda gets annoying.

Aug 27, 2010I just got my Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant from Bell, and I am not verry technical. I have some (maybe 10) additional apps installed since i got the phone, including advanced task killer.
My issue is this: when I get a new message, it appears in the blinds (the thing at the top?) like it is supposed to, but after I check the message, it stays there, saying I have the new message. I can clear it and it goes away, but shouldnt it dissapear after I check the text?
I also crash frequently, but I am thinking newer firmware will fix that
