Samsung Galaxy S :: Re-enabling GPRS - Can't Switch 3G Access Back On
Oct 24, 2010
When I first bought my Samsung Galaxy S, I shut down everything 3G related as my internet bundle didn't kick in until this week. Now I can't seem to switch 3G access back on. I've downloaded APNdroid, but I've clearly left something crucial switched off as 3G still not working. The instruction manual isn't very useful.

I recently got a new SIM card (same provider, Telkomsel, but for a different area code in Indonesia). The settings are supposed to be automatic, and I do indeed have a "Telkomsel GPRS" under "Mobile networks" > "Access Point Names". The 3G on the old SIM worked pretty well, without having to do anything, but this one gets only rare and short-lived connections to the net. I've rung up Telkomsel a few times now, and they're supposed to be fixing it soon, but it's a few days and I'm getting impatient. One of the help line people suggested manually entering a new access point, but the info he gave me was a bit confusing.

I bought my new Samsung Galaxy S phone 3 weeks back. I am quite satisfied with it, but i have quite an irritating problem, my GPRS keeps on going back every now and then, like once every 2 minutes and then i have to turn the Flight mode on/off to bring it back. It might not be a problem in countries where 3G is available but here in India it's quite unsettling to see such a nuance in such a wonderful OS. I know it's not a problem with the carrier(Vodafone for me) as nokia phones work seamlessly in the same area.

Very happy with the i9000 in the last few days of ownership, using launcher pro in place of stock but otherwise mostly unchanged. One issue we have is that after being at home overnight on WiFi, the phone doesn't automatically re enable 3g. To restore the mobile data you have to go into the network operator selection and re select Optus (our carrier here in Aus). Leaving it on auto doesn't help, and you have to manually choose it each time (ie: it "forgets" what I selected or something). Using apndroid to mangle the apn on/off doesn't help. Restarting the phone fixes it but obviously not ideal.
Have tried entering the code to change it to gsm only instead of the default wcdma/gsm auto with no benefit. When the mobile data is working, it happily switches between 2g and 3g, but will sometimes simply stop working as per the wifi overnight problem and I have to manually select the operator again. This happens very randomly and can go several days without drama, our only a few minutes. While this data won't connect, the phone capabilities aren't affected and you can make and receive calls fine. In fact if you dial a number it sometimes causes the data to re connect.

I found this nice and maybe speed improving hack, by replacing the stock 1.6 dalvik compiler to the one from 2.1. It should improve performance by 50%. [HACK] JIT enabled Dalvik VM on Android 1.6 (Dusted Donuts) [Hack] - xda-developers Sadly i can't get it to work (followed the instructions from the link). Anyone had experience with it and maybe got it to work?

Just installed Galaxo 1.6.3.4, everything works great, except that gprs/edge capabilities seem to be switched off? They used to work before the root. I can use wifi, but cannot get any data traffic outside wifi areas.

Anyone else here using Docomo service in India? In the last week or so, my GPRS has been spotty. Actually, it's mostly not working at all, but will sometimes be up for an hour or so. In perhaps related news, I've also been receiving empty messages from 52236 via SMS.

Last week I was in the US and had gotten the AT&T pay-as-you-go sim. It charges 1c/kb and I thought that's not too bad since I *only* get outlook and yahoo email. Well, *before* I knew it, it sucked up $14.40 for internet access....Frantically called AT&T customer service and after a long wait, they told me that my device had access the service and downloaded 1.5Mb! I asked them if there was a way to turn off the GPRS(since I was mostly interested in their $2/day unlimited calling service) and they said they don't have a way to turn it off Tried a bunch of things like turning off auto-sync (in settings) etc...but STILL I ended up paying $40 by the end of the day!!
Is their a way to turn off GPRS completely and also monitor what applications are accessing the service? All I have to go by is what AT&T says at the website!

I just got an x10(android 1.6) , it seems like d phone can automatically access network/gprs whenever it feels like, this may cause a huge bill on me n also drain all battery power within d day, unlike older phone(not that old), gprs will be in use when needed n shutdown when not needed.
The only way to stop all this auto 3G downloading/uploading is to manually disable all the mms feature in the mobile networks or kill all task(kill task appilcation). And if i wanted to use those gprs, again i have to manually turn on all these setting, whereby traditional handphone need not do all these , which i find it more convinient unless subscriber has all the free DATA given.
Hopefully the os/software can be upgraded better to understand a user needs whenever needed and not automatically downloaded data as if noone bizness.

I'm getting the desire on pay as you go and while I will use GPRS for apps when out and for browsing, I'd rather not have it on 24/7 draining my wallet. Can the GPRS access be turned on and off when you want it, or is it always on?

Is there a way to force the GPS on the Galaxy S to switch on?
I'm using Goggle Navigation and sometimes the GPS fails to switch on. I can get round it with 'turn it off - turn it on' and works first time, however, is there a way of just turning off the GPS and turning it back on, or forcing it on?

Just wanted to refresh for those that arent aware of this coming merger.
"from 5th October, 30 million customers the combined customer base of Orange and T-Mobile in the UK - will be offered the opportunity to access both networks, enabling them to make calls and send texts in more places in the UK for no extra cost."
This is great news from those suffering from sub-par reception, and im pretty sure will obliterate the competition in terms of available phone signal.

Is there any way to be able to control an SGS remotely via a PC, as you can now do with the HTC Desire HD using htcsense.com ? I guess what we are looking for is a way to allow you to get the phone to ring for those times that my wife cant remember where she put it, or to lock it or erase all the data if it gets stolen/lost etc. I presume that this isn't a standard feature on the SGS (unless we have missed it) and so I don't know if there are any apps out there that allow you to do this?

I have a couple of questions about connectivity on Android, if anyone has any insight it would be great. What is the default when an application wants to wirelessly connect? Is it WLan? And if WLan is switched off or there is no access points around is it 3G or GPRS? Is a device always ip connected? Or when its disabled from WLan or 3G does it's lose its IP address?
Is an application, for example the browser only ever connected to one IP address? Or can it be connected to multiple addresses for each radio such as GPRS or WiFi (WLan)? Can an application decide which connection to open a socket to? For example can I create an application and decide whether to connect the socket to the WLan or GPRS? Or does the OS decide? Finally how do native applications handle connectivity? In the same manner?

I can't get a fully functioning data connection on my Galaxy S through my current SIM card. I can browse with Opera (which doesn't seem to care what the APN settings are) but nothing else works, (unless I get a wifi connection, which works fine). The problem may or may not disappear when I move countries soon (to Indonesia) but I'd like to understand what's going on.
I bought it in Singapore - it's got a SingTel setup (sticker on the back, boot screen, links on home) but it's supposed to be unlocked (and SingTel say they sell them unlocked too). A guy at the Samsung service center in Singapore said it was "locked" for other countries though because they don't yet have the Galaxy S - but once phone companies have the right settings for the phone it should be fine. I used it with a different Singapore phone company (StarHub) with a data plan for a couple of days that worked fine. I browsed and used the Google Maps app, no problem.
Then the problem. I came to Malaysia a week ago and bought a Maxis SIM card. At their service center they entered the APN settings (they already sell the Galaxy S), and the internet worked when I tested it on a few pages. 30 min later I tried again and got nothing, and it didn't come back. I returned to the service center, they made small changes to the settings, and it worked again... for a few minutes only. Then I discovered that I can browse in Opera - even if I use dummy APN settings (random numbers in one field and everything else blank or default).
However after I restarted the phone again, I couldn't repeat the success. I stopped unneeded apps, I uninstalled NimBuzz, I tried restarting over and over... but I get no connection other than with Opera. I've tried other internet apps (Maps, sync in GTasks, OkCupid, NimBuzz) and none work. Any clues as to what's going on?

So i removed alot of bloatware with Android Mate, but I didn't back up anything. Not that my phone doesn't behave, but is it possible to get all these apps back? Maybe get my phone back to factory state if I want to? No, I didn't make a backup file. I now, stupid of me. But if anyone else did, in theory shouldn't it be possible for me just to download that file and then "restore" the phone back to factory state?

I have a samsung galaxy S i9000, and the mobile access point is activated, I can successfully connect to it using my laptop but when I try to connect using my other mobile (ex: Nokia) to the Galaxy's mobile access point on the target device it says the wireless connection is lost and on the Galaxy the mobile access point is deactivated automatically, is this a limitation that the other device cannot be a WiFi mobile (Which I don't think)? OR is this a bug in Galaxy's mobile access point.

Is there a way to block access to browsers? I would like the user of a Samsung galaxy Pocket (version 4.0.4) to be able to access one browser only.
The browser in use has a blacklist filter which block websites, but indeed you can easily bypass it by installing a new browser.
My past attempts: I have searched for a long time but could not find anything that worked. The browsers I have found which can block other browsers are not compatible with this device.
I have also searched for alternative ways of blocking websites though a blacklist but all of those solutions require rooting the device, which I do not have enough technical confidence to do.
Blocking Play store is not either an option since you would be able to install new browsers in other ways.
