Motorola :: Wifi Will Not Shut Off On Droid
Jan 7, 2010
ok before you all say "why shut it down, its better using wi-fi" i know that and i have my reasons. moving on, i have tried several times now to turn off the wi-fi on my droid, both thru the power control widget and also by going thru settings-wireless-wi-fi turn off wi-fi. but for some reason it keeps coming back on. is the droid set to automatically turn on the wife when ever there is one avail even if i dont want it too? is there some hidden setting i am not seeing.

I've seen a couple of threads about how to turn off different radios and data connections but does anyone know how I'd go about shutting off everything except for wifi? Pretty much what I want is airplane mode with wifi still on. (Or does airplane mode still allow you to turn on wifi?)

When trying to use tasker to shut off wifi after touching an nfc tag I occasionally get the following:
It happens about 50% of the time and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I'm running on an AT&T Galaxy S3 running Task's AOKP newest build. Is this a tasker issue or something else entirely?

My DroidX has been rooted for a couple of days now and I'm loving that new features that I can utilize. However, I didn't check my phone for a couple of hours and when I took it out to send a text I realized that my phone was shut off. Has anybody encountered this same issue? I didn't even have to hold my power button to start it back up. I simply pressed it like I was waking it up and it showed the power up symbol.Update: When starting up, it did not show the Motorola symbol but skipped ahead to the "Droid" sign.

After 10 years of Blackberry I made the switch to a Droid X six days ago.
Twice in the last 6 days my phone has shut down and become completely unresponsive.
The first time was the first time I powered it off. When I attempted to power it on the phone would only show me the Motorola logo and do nothing else.
A battery pull fixed it.
The second time it went dead was as I unhooked it from my computer USB...it's a PC and I "dismounted" the phone manually first...but then...nothing....
A battery pull fixed it again.
So. That's a long way of asking: is two 'dead' experiences in 6 days leading to two battery pulls normal? Should I take it back while I can?

Had a problem with my alarm clock this morning. It went off @ one of the alarm times I have (although I could swear it wasn't checked to be on for today). But then I could not shut it off. Tried hitting nearly ever button both physical and virtual and the damned alarm wouldn't stop. I eventually just shut it off and turned it back on and that did the trick. Did I miss a step in how to turn alarm off?

The GPS icon is now always on my notification area. This has only been happening for the past couple of days. Previously, it would come on when in use (e.g. using Google Maps or some other application that was using the GPS) and then would disappear when the application terminated.
I used Taskiller to terminate all running applications, but the GPS icon was still on after I killed ALL of the running applications. So, I'm assuming that it's not because of a new, or updated, application I installed.
It doesn't appear to be causing any problems, but wonder if it's really on and draining the battery more than necessary. Also, it was a reminder to me that I'd left an application running that was using the GPS.
Is anyone else seeing this?

I have had my Droid for almost a month now and i love it,,, but there are a couple of really annoying things that it does, and i was wondering if it was just me, or if anyone else has these problems too...
I will hit the unlock button on the top and start to do my pattern, and all the sudden, it says that i lifted my finger... and takes two tries out....
I will hit the unlock button and start my pattern and the screen will shut off like there is no activity and i will have to hit the unlock button again, and start over.
Oh and how about this, tried both handcent and stock messaging app, i regularly have periods of long delay from both receiving and sending text messages, i will be sending one text and get a text sending overload message also.... then i will have periods of sending and receiving the exact same text 10-15 times in a row.... this happens all of the time and its extremely annoying....

What possible reason could there be for you to code your apps so that they switch on in the background when the phone is turned on and use up precious battery life?
Or, why would you code your apps to stay on after I, the user, have hit the back button because I no longer want your app to run?
I mean, REALLY! Yes, I own up to being a newbie Android user, and what I don't know could fill the Library of Congress. Still, this is common sense we're talking about here. I've done some industrial app development and Enter/Exit, On/Off are basic pieces of logic in the main loop of an program in any language.
The only reason that we phone users need task killer apps is because you developers insist on creating apps that don't know when the f**k to turn themselves off.
And, it seems to me like you, the app developers, are one of the main reason why these phones have such crappy battery life. I mean, my Samsung Instinct, as bad as it was, got 18 to 24 hours of life off of one charge. With the Hero, I'm lucky if I can get 10 hours, and that's even with configuring my email download to only three times per day!
This is not hard, people. You code the app to stay off until, I, the user, manually turn it on. AND, you also code it to turn off when I, the user, hit the back button.
Yes, I understand that there are certain apps that it is advantageous to keep running in the background. So, fine, make it so those keep running. BUT, there is no possible reason for apps like Flashlight, or BBC News, or Camera, or SprintTV to have to run all the time in the background!
I am so tempted to just trash the lot of you. If I did, maybe I might not have as much functionality, but my teenager would be able to reach me late in the day because my phone battery would still have juice.

I was messaging around today and found where to shut of the screen while charging, but I wanted to turn it back on and can't find where it is? Also before the update I could have sworn there was an option on the screen timeout to set it to never. Now I don't have that option.

I'm using the latest Wifi Fix and OverClock kernel for 2.2 Froyo, but I'm still having issues randomly disconnecting from the wireless network... The wifi signal shows 0/3 bars even when sitting right in front of the router.
Froyo Overclocked Kernels includes *wifi* fix is where I got my kernel. I've been overclocking to 1200 GHz.
This is where I got my ROM (it was updated today) Download: Newer Motorola Droid Froyo Leak FRF57 | Droid Life: A Motorola Droid Blog
Even under the wireless network now, it says "Disabled, secured with 802.1x EAP"

I've got a couple of questions about the volume rocker: if i've got an incoming call I hear my ringtone going off, but when I click the volume rocker the ringtone gets shut down. You can imagine that's pretty annoying when the rocker gets inadvertently pressed in your pocket (since it's so sensitive), you'll practically always miss the call. when the phone is locked, the rocker is used for media volume when listening to music. This combined with the sensitivity of the button is pretty annoying as the volume keeps getting adjusted when the phone is in my pocket. Is there a solution to these problems? Can the volume rocker be disabled completely? I must add i'm probably noticing these things more because I've purchased a rather tight glove (Puro) for the phone, and the buttons get pressed rather easily.

This is a new issue I am having; I've had my Eris since December and had no problems with it. My phone is no longer going to sleep itself. I set the 'Screen Time Out' all the way down to 15 seconds but if I don't hit the end button to manually put it to sleep, it would never sleep. This is really frustrating because since I was used to not having to do that, I'll put it in my pocket without hitting the end button and end up clicking a lot of stuff with my bottom. What is this problem? I've not downloaded any applications as of the last month and I use a task killer every time I put the phone down.

Since the 2.1 OTA update, my Droid Eris has been a little slower and little buggy. Which I'm not that concerned about. But today, I cannot drag down to unlock my screen. When I hit menu, it does nothing. Is there another way to shut down the phone when you cannot unlock the screen?
'Sorry if this is an utter newb question, but I think if I can power down an restart the phone, I may be able to unlock my screen.

Please list to me the benfeits of switching my WiFi on to pick up my wireless network as oppossed to just leaving in the defautl 3G mode. This would be very helpful for me. Specifically I am a bit fuzzy on a couple items:
Does it make the internet faster when wiFi is enabled?
Is it using MORE or less battery power to be left in WiFi connectivity mode? (maybe it uses less battery when surfing the net, but if Im not surfing the net wifi should be off so that both 3G and Wifi are not both draining?)
Is there a way to set my phone to automatically connect to certain WiFi networks when the phone recognizes they are available? (i.e., my home wireless network as oppossed to just getting alerts on EVERY available network?)

Anyone try to use Fab's wifi fix on another ROM? Specifically, on one of JRummy's Froyo ROM? I'm getting that "scanning" thing whenever I try to connect to a new network and I thought I might try the fix as it's still on my SD card.
