Motorola Droid :: Automatic Update App?
Jun 6, 2010
Is there a way (or are there any developers currently working on a way) to give permission to automatically update apps? It's annoying when I come home one day and see there are 8 updates, I blow them off, then a couple days later there are 14 updates, etc. It would be really nice if there were such a feature.

My droid razr was installing an automatic update, made an error and then failed ultimately. It happened over night, so I wasn't even paying attention to it. This morning it was stuck with no service, no data, nothing. I tried turning it off and then back on, putting airplane mode on and then off. No luck. I then did a factory reset. Now it just says "please wait, this may take a few minutes." It does not change. I waited as long as the batter would stay charged. Still nothing.
I also tried re activating it on the verizon wireless website. No luck.

I heard that I can tell my droid to do automatic updates when ever an app needs it. I have searched for where I can adjust that setting but I have found nothing. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I have a Motorola Droid running Eclair 2.1 that I rooted a few weeks back. Today I received the auto-update notice on my device, but I don't want to just go ahead with it and lose root access. So I am hoping someone can tell me how I should handle this. I would like to update, but only if I can keep root access as I have overclocked and run a number of other root-only apps. Here is my device info... I'll try to provide as much as I can. I used the instructions listed HERE to root my device, and HERE to overclock. Also, will it be necessary to wipe all my data to perform this update and re-root? And if it turns out that I am not ready to update right now, is there a way to stop the automatic notifications?
Model number: Droid
Firmware version: 2.1
Baseband version: C_01.3E.03P
Kernel version: 2.6.29-omap1-P3Droid p3droid@MyDroidWorld #28
Build number: ESE81 by Pete.

Is there any way to get my Droid to only lock the screen when I manually hit the lock button? If using it as a mp3 player for instance it's horrible to have to unlock it over and over again every time I want to skip a track or something.

I got my Droid my automatic brightness has worked fine. It's been extremely fast, reliable and the power manager widget works great as well. As of yesterday, however, now my brightness seems to stay the same all the time. Whenever I attempt to adjust my brightness in settings, it immediately reverts back to automatic brightness and keeps itself at the same level. Also, the power manager button no longer works either. Instead of cycling through the three different settings it turns my brightness all the way up, and when I press my power button the screen takes a few extra seconds to dim before shutting off.

On my phone i have downloaded it but when i click to start it it blips the screen really fast then goes back to the desktop. not sure if advanced task killer is stopping Automatic task killer from being able to start or what.

is there anything we have to do as developers to enable automatic application update or will the market take care of everything?

So I hooked up my work email to my DInc Exchange. It works fine, can send and receive emails, calendar, etc. The only problem is it doesn't automatically update the inbox when a new email comes in. I went under Settings > Send & Receive > Set download frequency. It is set to "Manual". I change it to "As items arrive" and then exit out. Go back in and its back to "Manual".

When I switch ROMs on my droid, and boot up the new ROM, sign in to my google account, etc. the market automatically starts downloading all of the apps that I had. Now, like most rooters, I'm using Titanium Backup and restore my apps through that so I keep all of the data and settings as well. How do I stop the market from automatically starting those downloads? All I need to download is TiBu so I can restore all of my backups. The last couple of times I just go into the market and cancel all of the downloads except TiBu but with over 100 apps, that's very time consuming. There has to be an easier way that I haven't found or read about yet.

Has anyone found a way to automatically change the volume settings when plugged into the media dock? I hate getting notifications of every email while I am asleep but I still need to get phone calls and text messages for work. On my Blackberry I could change my preset volume settings by pushing one button. So far on the Droid I have not figured it out yet.

Is this a known problem? I have automatic updates checked on all of my apps, but I still have to go in and manually check for/download updates.

I updated to the Official Sprint 2.1 update when it became available and prior to that I was running the leaked RUU. No issues with either and a general improvement in Hero performance with both, except for one quirk occurring only with the Official ROM. About 33% of the time, when initially powering up the phone in the AM, I would not get an automatic web connection. The phone function would operate, I would get the signal strength bars and Ev symbol, but no web. When this happened, I would turn off the phone and then immediately turn it back on and it would always auto connect to the web the second time and everything would work fine.
One of these times I also removed the battery before I turned it back on, but the problem would still occur occasionally. I called Sprint Tech Support and asked about the issue. The Technician looked at my account and made an update to it on his end, then asked me to go into Settings/About Phone/System Updates and do an "Update Profile". He said it should alleviate the non-connection problem. So far the phone has worked perfectly after doing this.

I have recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S, and Google Maps came installed on the phone. Now if I enter Android Market, then Google Maps is automatically updated, if there is an update. I have checked it under My apps, but there is no Automatic update checkbox as for other programs I downloaded from the market. Is there a way to disable this automatic update for Google Maps? I would be great, if I could choose when it should be updated, because its not funny, when my 3G limit is exceeded with Google Maps updates.

i don't record video very often, so i just noticed this problem after having my droid for almost a month. does anyone else experience this? it's a little difficult to explain, but it seems like the automatic brightness of the video recorder is not working correctly. in low light scenarios, instead of the video getting brighter so you can see more, it actually gets DIMMER. i can tell this because i set up a scenario where half the room is regular light and half is low light.
things look fine in the regular light. additionally, things look fine when i have both sides of the room in the picture, and i can tell the droid adjusts a little because the the picture will get brighter, causing the regular light side to be very bright but the low light side to be visible (that's the expected behavior). then, when i pan to the low light side, i see the camera make a brightness adjustment again, but it gets dimmer rather than brighter, making it almost impossible to see anything. the screen basically turns black. i'm sure this is not how it's supposed to work, but what i'm wondering is whether i have a faulty unit and should exchange or whether everyone has this issue. did anyone understand this post?

Wondering if there is a way to disable the automatic music player every time I insert my ear-buds.
I usually start google listen, but It seems If I don't...the music player starts up.
This also occurred when I tried to watch a video.
I would prefer to start the music player manually, if I want to listen to music.

My wife's Incredible will automatically rejustify the margins of a web page when she enlarges the type size, and will rejustify the margins if she then shrinks the type size. I cannot get the X to rejustify in this manner, except sporadically on BBC News. At the Verizon store, the Flextronic tech went through the systems menus and could not get the margins to justify either. Anyone know how to make the X rejustify the margins?

I am wondering how I can get my gmail to refresh itself and notify me of emails? I have all of the gmail settings figured out (including email notifications), but I always have to manually go in and refresh to see if my inbox has been updated.

For those who are having a problem with the email program not going out to get your mail, delete automatic task killer. I am sure there is refrence to this in other posts. I just keep seeing it pop up here and there. I removed mine and it started getting my mail every 5 min just like I told it to. Dang I love this phone!

I've got a quick question.
My friend bricked his DX with the Deodexing or whatever. After an sbf flash..
Can we update to 2.2 via update.zip in recovery, install rom manager, and then install MY backup on his phone? I'm currently uploading them to file hosting, and wondering if this would work.
If so, will he be fully rooted, deodexed, and themed(I'm rocking the xtreme 2.2 theme)?

I want to make an application using android which does the following:
Starting Step: Asks user to use audio file or text(English)
1. Picks a phone number at random(or based on certain query) from database,I read that android uses sqlite 2. Makes a call to this number and plays the selected sound file OR the entered message using Text to speech. 3. When call finishes Update the database 4. Repeats the process till application is open
I am new to Android Developer's Community. So Please tell me if it is possible or not to make such an application and also tell me how much time and effort will it take? Will it be easy or tough for a beginner?

When I go to attach a picture file on my droid eris for a message, it automatically resizes it, only problem is, that the pictures were never too big to begin with, usually aroun100-300kb and then when it does resize it, it goes down to 12kb on average, a tiny picture with a big black frame on the screen. What gives? Using stock message program. No other complaints about the message program, so not looking to switch.

As I understand by default HttpClient automatically handles Redirect replies from server (follows the redirect link included in the answer from a server). I wonder if and how is it possible to disable this behaviour and handle redirects manually, meaning that I can get redirect link from the reply, modify it and issue a new http request. In a "desktop" version of HttpClient/HttpMethod one can do it as follows:
HttpMethod method = new GetMethod(requestUrl); method.setFollowRedirects(false);
How can I do the same under Android?

So one of the cool things about Froyo is being able to check off Enable Automatic Update for market apps. So i have that checked off for like 80+% of my 80+ apps (that took a while to do let me tell you). Now i have had three apps have updates available since i checked off the box, yet they never actually automatically updated. I waited, hours, still never updated. Is there a setting i need to modify? Do i need to tell it what time of day to do it? Anyone else noticing this? I only really want it in apps that i don't care about reading the new features. But it is annoying that i have it enabled and it does nothing.

Unlike our US counterpart (Motorola Droid) the European Motorola Milestone/ users are not currently given any updates at all. The update server does not respond, as such we are stuck with 2.0 and with well known documented problems. Some of which make the device not usable.
