Motorola Droid X :: Understanding PC USB Options

Aug 28, 2010

I was about to write that I didn't quite understand the USB options that are given to me when I click on my USB connection in the Notifications screen when I'm hooked up to my PC. When I switch to "charge only", my Windows Media player still sees what's on the Droid X (Android 2.1), and when I try to use Media Share on the Droid X, it still says "SD card busy". But now I'm in a real pickle, because I changed the setting to "charge only", unhooked the phone, and then reconnected to the PC. Now the USB connection is no longer showing up in the Notifications area, despite multiple reconnections, and now WMP doesn't see what's on my phone, and now I can't figure out how to switch back to one of the other options. FOLLOW-UP: After restarting the phone and the PC the USB connection is working again, so that was just a separate glitch. Getting back to the main point: even when I'm in Charge Only mode, the PC can see the phone's contents in File Manager. Windows Media Player doesn't recognize the phone as DROID as it does when I'm in Windows Media Sync mode, but instead calls it E: and still lists its contents. Bottom line: what is the significance of the four modes: PC Mode, Windows Media Sync, USB Mass Storage, and Charge Only?

Motorola Droid :: Understanding Google Voice

Sep 14, 2010

I have a google voice number and I have the friends and family plan on verizon. I currently have my google voice number on my friends and family plan. Do all calls that go through my google voice number count as friends and family? Also, I currently do not have google voice set up to make calls. If I were to set it up that way, would that mean that all my outgoing calls would also be counted as friends and family?

Motorola Droid :: No APN Options?

Mar 31, 2010

I've been investigating battery-saving options and was having strange behavior while using the APN activation/deactivation settings... no apps that I found seemed to be able to toggle the data connection. Looking more in depth, it doesn't appear that I even HAVE an APN setting. Could this be accurate? Maybe I just can't find it?I have a Droid, recently purchased, on Verizon in the US, on ESD56.

Motorola Droid :: Multimedia Dock Options

Nov 11, 2009

I love the multimedia dock except for one thing, it's too bright at night. The light bulb icon does make dimmer and more relaxed, but the buttons on the bottom of the phone are lit up to full brightness. Anyone know of any apps or options within the phone's software that allows me to turn off the buttons?

Also, anyone have any app recommendations for setting notifications? I'd like my phone to ring at night only when it's in its cradle. Right now, to keep it from chirping with every email, I have to set it to silent, which also turns the phone ringer off.

Motorola Droid :: Wifi Tethering Options

Feb 21, 2010

1. Can I password protect my droid like i could with a normal router? (WEP or something to that affect?) and

2. will verizon notice extreme usage of bandwith on my data plan from tethering too much? Supposedly our data plans are limited to 5gb a month even though they say its 'unlimited'. I don't think I'll use it all that much because i'll only use it in the event that I really need it and have no wifi access.

Finally got my X rooted, and I want to modify the list of options I'm presented with when I select "Share" on my phone... The default listing has things like:Bluetooth

Email
Facebook
Gmail

I'd like to remove a few of these, as well as add things like "InstantUp" so I can use the Share option as a tool to quickly upload files to my server. Has anybody managed to do this with their rooted X?

Motorola Droid 2 :: Choose Widget Menu Options

when I long press on my homescreen to add a widget (say Pandora's widget) I have to scroll through a TON of crap. 5 different beautiful widget options, 7 calendar pad pro options, 6 contact widget options, 6 folder organizer widget options, etc. Most of those I know I will NEVER EVER use. How can I remove them from my "choose widget". My phone is rooted, and one app I used, pure calendar, gave me the option of which "choose widget" menu options to show. So I know it exists somewhere.

Hoping it is as easy as just replacing the lens cover.

However, I deleted a contact and had to re-add them. Now it will not re-add their Facebook info. This doesnt happen to all of them, just ones I've deleted and re-added. Any ideas on how to add it?

Motorola Droid X :: Video Recording / Options For Encoding (MPEG4 Or H.263)

Sep 23, 2010

I have two questions regarding video recording on the Droid X.

1. What options are there for encoding? On my HTC Hero I can encode in MPEG4 or H.263. What about the Droid X?

2. My friend sent me a video from her Droid X, but I can't hear anything as far as audio in a normal setting. The only way I can pick up anything she's saying is if I max out the Media volume and hold the speaker directly up to my ear. Is there something she's doing wrong when she's recording the video? This has happened twice now.

Motorola Droid :: ROM Updates - Any Options To Make Process Easy

Feb 4, 2010

It didn't take me long to realize update.zip installations of ROMs don't always work like they should, meaning the only way to install a ROM is via Nandroid restore. But, that clears all my data with it, meaning I have to re-DL and reconfigure all my app and settings. But with new ROM versions coming out every day, going through this process of repeat-reconfiguration is starting to become a major hassle. What options are there for avoiding this headache?

Motorola Droid :: Expand Power Buttons Phone Options Possible?

Nov 5, 2010

I wonder if there is a way to expand the power buttons "phone options" with things like 'reboot' for example. Yes, I know some themes have this ability, but I am looking just to expand the power button offerings and wonder if there is a root option or file edit or something can do so. Not interested in installing a theme just for this, they are not my gig, so I will pass on that as an option - so if the answer is no then, no worries.

Does it mean if I had a label set up and told it to go directly to that label and skip the inbox that i would still get an alert on my phone? The reason i am asking is because before i got this phone, i had a label in my gmail called "craigslist". Everything dealing with craigslist went into this and skipped the inbox. Thats worked well but i still need to be alerted when i get a new offer from craigslist. Will that snyc label option do what i want it to do?

2. on board image resizing, the 5, 3 and 2mp options dont cut it. let us choose 640x480(all MP's), 800X600(all MPs) 1024x768, etc..

3. when in camera settings, when you click back to get back to the options it closes the whole settings slider. which is annoying.

Motorola Droid : New Google Maps Update Ruined My Latitude - Got Screen With Many Options Including Navigate To Send Text

Aug 21, 2010

I used to really love the Latitude interface, when I clicked on a friend in Latitude, I got a screen with many options, including Navigate to, send text, etc.

One really cool feature on this screen was "what's nearby" which showed stores etc. that were near my friend.

Also, the background was black and the text was white.

NOW (after the last update): I lost the "what's nearby" feature AND the background is white and the text is black.

What can I do? Is there a way to revert maps to the older release?

Motorola Droid X :: Facebook Contacts Linked To Phone Contacts Missing Options

Jul 17, 2010

I got my DroidX on 7/15 and on 7/16 linked all my phone contacts who have facebook to a facebook contact via social networking. I kike how the phone sets the picture, I like that in the contact entry it shows me thier status on facebook. What I don't like is that when I open up a contac that is both a phone contact and a facebook contact and I tap the facebook icon on the contact screen I get 3 options (view profile, write on wall, and poke). If I open up a contact that is only facebook and tap that same Icon I get 4 options (view profile, message, write on wall, and poke). Is there some reason linking the facebook contact to a phone contact needs to remove that option? I'd like to be able to send a facebook message from the phone to any contact as easy as I can send a text message.

Android :: Understanding How Activities Work

Jul 22, 2010

I'm trying to wrap my head around activities and how they begin and end in Android. I've read what the Developer Guide has to say regarding activities and I'm still a little fuzzy on how I should appropriately handle their navigation in my application. As an example, say I have a main activity that starts a secondary activity. Once the secondary activity has completed it's purpose, I want to close it and return to the main activity. I recall having read that the activity stack was just that, a stack of activities that are pushed and popped. So I assumed that calling finish on the secondary activity would return me to my existing main activity. Calling finish on the secondary activity didn't actually do anything, visibly at least. Is there further reading that anyone can recommend to me? Chris Stewart cstewart@gmail.com http://www.androidsdkforum.com

I have it on 'airplane mode' right now but that sort of defeats the purpose of having it, might as well turn it OFF.

Android :: Not Understanding Activity Stack?

Dec 3, 2009

I'm having trouble with my activities when they go in the background. I have two activities, A and B. Only A can launch B (manifest copied below). This is very confusing. It's like Android knows my app is running, and puts a new instance of A on top of the old B instance running. I'd just expect that the application gets paused in-place, and whenever the user hits the app icon again, it just picks up where it left off (in this case, just show B again!) Below is the manifest, and the activity classes for this test are completely empty (except A which has a button to launch B).
