Motorola Droid :: ROM Updates - Any Options To Make Process Easy
Feb 4, 2010
It didn't take me long to realize update.zip installations of ROMs don't always work like they should, meaning the only way to install a ROM is via Nandroid restore. But, that clears all my data with it, meaning I have to re-DL and reconfigure all my app and settings. But with new ROM versions coming out every day, going through this process of repeat-reconfiguration is starting to become a major hassle. What options are there for avoiding this headache?

I have a non-rooted Motorola Droid running 2.2 and I want to root to try out a ROM. I want to make sure I do this right. I don't want to lose any data (pictures, texts, etc) and I don't want to lose any apps. I've read a bunch of threads and it sounds like this is the general order I should proceed in:
1 - Backup data with MyBackupPro
2 - Root
3 - Backup apps with Titanium Backup
4 - Install ROM
Is this correct? Am I missing anything? Will the root method or ROM make a difference in terms of the process?

I have a bluetooth adapter attached to my car's iPod dock. It acts like a bluetooth headset so I can play music wirelessly from my Droid. My problem is that I have to go through a few menus to connect the paired devises every time I get in the car. Is there a way to have the Droid automatically connect to this device, or is there a widget that can help make this process easier?

I Just installed a new theme (Live Wire) for my Lithium Mod Rom. Don't know if there is a connection, but when I need to update an app, I get the message something like "process android media process stopped unexpectedly" and it will not allow the update. Everything else works well. I have turned it off for awhile, and have done a battery pull.

Is there a way to craft a daemon process as to make it "unlistable" to a process viewer?
OR
is there a way to dynamically change a process name?
I'd like to design a security application without having to modify the firmware, if possible (yes I know about "security through obscurity"...).

When i deal with deleting a contact using new google api,i got the problem

Following is the only response :
You have to run a sync process, so it updates with Google Contacts, than it will be removed permanently. Check for deleted flag

Is it possible (without violating any licenses) to write a native C/C++ application on top of the Android OS and make it run as a daemon process?
There are already several daemon process' running which one can see with the 'ps' command, the legal part concerns me the most. And also the lack of documentation on how to exactly do this.
For the writing part, I guess one could use basic Linux programming concepts, since Android supports at least to some level the standard Posix API. To make it run as the phone boots, some modifications is of course required in init as well.
I have no plans to have this app in the Android Market, so installing it manually to the phone is not a problem. As long as it does not require re-compiling the whole OS or kernel.

I know there are a few threads going around about ringdroid and other great apps you can download to make ringtones for your X. Personally I like using more on my computer...I just feel I can edit them better. The site I use is... Free Ringtones for mobile and iPhone - Audiko. You can download them to your computer, then e-mail and download to your phone or send them direct to your phone. Just wanted to share in case it helps anyone....personally I find it really easy to ensure I have the best quality

Does anyone have an option on either of these apps? Or think one is better then the other? I need a text app that will allow me to text to a "Group" instead of text and picking each name separate.

Let me start this off by saying today was my first time trying to root but I've read a lot about it. Anyways, I bought Easy Root this morning and rooted without any issues. Got Titanium and backed everything up. Got Rom Manager and downloaded Sapphire 1.0.0. I tried to install it, but when I tried to flash into Clockwork Recovery I was just brought to the regular recovery screen. Not realizing this at the time, I proceeded to wipe the phone and reboot. Obviously, it did not install the Sapphire Rom. For some reason, I figured I should just go back to stock android 2.2, so I did that. I still have the Superuser Permissions in my Apps, but when I go into Titanium, it says I'm not rooted. I even had it download a new version of BusyBox. I'm guessing this is because I went back to STOCK 2.2. Why do I still have the ninja icon, though? I can't download Easy Root because it's been removed from the Market. Is there some other way to give Titanium SU permissions?

Pete's released an update.zip that will flash the proper files and changes to build.prop to enable JIT.
You should see about a 12-16% increase in linpack scores. Overall system performance should be boosted too. Whether it's noticeable or not depends on the user, I guess.
I've tested this on his BB 0.7. This will probably work for other ROMs too, but it flashes the BB 0.7 build.prop, so your build number will change if you're using a different ROM.
Here's the link:

Be sure to make a backup before you do this so you can revert if you run into any instabilities. However, in my testing, the newer ESE53 ROMs are pretty stable with JIT.

I'm having a problem downloading Easy Root..I bought it once, refunded it because I didn't have anough money in my account, then bought it again the same day...andnow it finally went through this morning and it says purchased because I got paid this morning...but when I try to click install it says "Download unsuccessful"...I've tried everything to get it to install but it won't work and I can't refund it again. If I could refund it again I would be able to successfully install it like I did with Rom manager and setCPU.

A text message or e-mail arrives, the notification alarm starts and I have to pull the phone out of the holder, press home to wake up the phone, press menu, then notifications to stop it. That seems like a lot of steps. Is there a setting I am missing to press the volume button or power button the stop the tone? Maybe an application? I know it times out at some point but by then I am sure anyone around me is annoyed at hearing "Check it out" being played over and over.

Couple of random annoyances since moving over from the BB Curve. I don't want to have to open the physical keyboard for any of these. Don't like the slide feel or the actual keyboard, just want to use the touch screen.
1) Is there a way to wake it up faster than having to (1) press the button on top then (2) swipe right to unlock?
2) How can I do 1-Touch speed dials on this thing? I need a fast way to unlock then speed dial someone. Right now it takes at least 6 commands to get the phone to unlock then go into the phone app, then contacts, then find the one you want then dial them. Waaaay too many key presses when I need to do this while diving.
3) How do I customize my Phone Favorites?
4) The tiny notifications are not enough for me, why don't the actual icons change? For example, when I get email, I want the actual icon to change and not just the tiny one to appear in the notification bar on top.
5) Is there a way to do custom notification schemes? For example, I want one regular that rings and beeps on everything, then I need a quite one that only vibrates on calls and texts while I am at work, no email notifications. Then I need a full vibrate one for quite on all notifications.
I like the phone, but I am having a hard time getting used to the amount of touches and clicks that you need to do to get things done. Everything seems to take too long with too many commands compared to the blackberry where everything was quick and easy.

I switched to a Motorola Droid 5 days ago (from a Blackberry curve). I'm having some trouble understanding some of the behavior and getting used to it. These are all things that I didn't have to deal with on the blackberry. I know they are different devices but I use my Phone primarily for work. I'm afraid now that I'll miss important messages or voice calls..
- Phone goes Mute (ringer)... No idea how it gets there. Probably a bad finger swipe on the home screen. Is there a way to disable this?
- No easy change from profiles (notifications, ringer, etc...). I tried a few apps but they all seems to fail at turning on/off notifications for e-mail/gmail.
- don't receive my messages (gmail), seems like it doesn't sync all the time
- gapps crashes all the time when downloading an app from the market.
- Random calls...
- Didn't use the browser, battery is 70%. Put it down for a movie (2 hours) and then battery is now 20%... Browser used the battery 50% according to the phone. Switch to the browser, was on the google.com home page.
I did search on all of these and they seem to be pretty much standard issues that people are having. Are they?Other that that it seems like a great phone. But like I said, I'm afraid of not getting calls sometime because it gets turned to "mute".

Just so everyone knows, this headset is awesome. I got the Rogue at VZW store for $75. Also, those who don't know, the VIP program is discontinued - so nice of them to send notification. Paired beautifully - and if you have your Droid and another phone, it can take calls and manage calls on multiple phones.
Anyhow - it paired nicely, easy to operate, very clear on both ends, and it tells you the number that is calling audibly. There are "apps" for the headset and one of them is for voice dialing. I will try it, but the Droid hardware (I think) doesn't support it. We shall see. Anyhow, I always like a heads up when looking for a good product so I hope this helps someone.
