Motorola Droid X :: How To Get A Basic Java Site To Work
Jul 18, 2010
May I start off saying that I can't stop playing with this phone. How do I get a basic java site to work? I have an Aquarium web controller and it isn't opening it. This worked on My blackberry (w/Opera), WM, & iphone(3wks lol). Do I need a plug-in or something check marked?

I was wondering if anyone was able to get their T-Mobile/Motorola Cliq to work on T-Mobile's basic data plan? They now have a specific Android data plan. I can't believe that they raised the data and unlimited text message plan to cost $45/mo. in total for Android phones! I'm using the $19.99 unlimited data/messaging plan now and would like to continue to use it. If anyone has successfully done this, please let me know how you did it.

I just deodexed the FRG01 build Pete posted a few days ago. I'm amazed i learned how to do it, although I had a tool that made it easier. Now I'm seeing during the deodexing it says the files are being put into a (origi_app) and (origi_frame) folder Root Explorer to look for these files and can't find them on my phone. Can someone please point me in the right direction? I'm on my way to making my first basic ROM.

This is me writing what will amount to about 10 pages (at least that is what I plan) on how batteries work at the basic quantum and chemical level. I have been promising it for some time, and with everything coming to a close for the summer, I have time. So within the next could of weeks (2 or so), I will be filling in posts.
EDIT: I will be adding about 15 or so posts to expand into. I apologize for the over inflation of my post count, but there is no way I am editing 4 or so huge posts. Each section will have its own post or two. If the mods have any problem with it, please take it down and tell me how to do it to your liking, as many people have asked about this thorough walk through and explanation and thus I would like to do it. I honestly have no idea how long this will be as I have no idea the maximum post size. So I am going over and will ask mods to delete unused posts.
Please use the comments to make specific requests for info, and I will be happy to add it.
EDIT 2: Darn...I seem to have done all of this in the wrong section. Mod, would you please oblige? Tips and tricks, please? Or the regular forum, if that is where you think it fits best. Table of contents

Is there a Rom that has bare items in it? I'm talking about just the basic basic essentials that makes the stock rom look like a joke. Something that doesn't contain ringtones, music files, just the bare items to keep the rom going: basic phone, basic texting, etc. and no added items like facebook, twitter, etc. No added scripts, features. If none like this exists, then does anyone know what is safe to remove from a stock rom and what needs to stay? I'm looking into making my own personal rom (and maybe one I can share with you all) that I can play with as far as adding and removing items while maintaining max storage space on the phone itself.

If not, please consider this a formal request. I understand it will take away the sliding keyboard functionality, but I still want one. Honestly, I just like the idea of a slip over silicone case, as opposed to a snap on case. Any help where I can at least find a basic black slip over silicone case for the droid?

HQ videos don't download fast enough on 3G or Wifi! I didn't think too much of it until my friend came over with his new Iphone 4G. I told him about the new mobile youtube site so that he can see the videos in HQ. He was on the crappy ATT 3G network and was able to play a video in HQ without any problems at all. It was downloading about twice as fast as it was playing. I was very surprised. I then tried the exact same video but it just sat there trying to download. It would play for about 2 seconds then stop. It was really bad. I then turned on my wifi, but it did the exact same thing. I restarted the phone, turned on wifi again, did a speed check so I knew that the wifi was working, then tried it again. Still wouldn't download any HQ youtube video faster than it was playing. I'm just really surprised that my overclocked droid (1.25ghz) on the verizon network (or wifi) couldn't come close to keeping up with the Iphone 4 on ATT's crappy network. I kind of feel like something is wrong here so I though I would ask if anyone else is able to play HQ videos on 3G without it stopping. In other words, is it downloading faster than its playing.

There is an app called Shortcovers. in the android market. It will let you both read free books an Buy Current Best Sellers Books. The site is uses a Kobo ereader and they sell them at the Borders bookstores. I am just thrilled to finally find someplace that has an easy access to purchase current books for my little Droid.

I've been plugging in my DroidX to my computer to do different things (root, transfer files, etc). Whenever I do, it causes the web browser to automatically open and start playing an annoying "helpful video" from the Verizon site. Does anyone know how to make it stop loading? Obviously I can close it out, but it is really annoying. I have root, so I can access the internal memory and delete the offending file. I just don't know which one to remove.

I'm looking for an app that'll help me find my phone via GPS without always having to have GPS enabled. I have Wave Secure and it doesn't have an option to turn my GPS on remotely, Lookout Mobile Security is the same way and Where's My Droid app requires GPS to be previously enabled.
The Internet location ability's accuracy within 200-1000ft radius doesn't seem useful if my phones stolen. I don't think walking from door to door, trying to listen in on each house for my alarm would work out too well.
Any app that could turn my GPS on remotely via codeword text or Internet site would be extremely useful.

So most of us are happy with our Droids, but we all have at least one item that we just wish Google would fix. Lucky for us, Google has a site dedicated to tracking bugs, issues, and feature requests!
So in addition posting questions here, go to Google's issues site and let them know directly! All you need to do is click the link and click the little white star icon. Issues with more stars will theoretically get more attention, so let's let Google know what we want.
I'll keep a running list of direct links in this post for everyone's convenience. If you want me to add more just post it in this thread along with a link to the issue.
Bluetooth Voice Dial Support
Exchange support for Global Address List
Exchange support for ActiveSync provisioning protocol
Exchange support for signatures
Exchange Calendar Appointment Invites have no accept or decline buttons
When headset is unplugged, sound does not return to speaker.
Issue 5853: Softbuttons lights on the Droid stay on while charging
Feature request: add support for GSM 6.10 8Khz/mono in a RIFF WAVE audio container
Issue 1151 Install apps to SD card
Issue 1181 [VoiceDial] Voice confirmation for Voice Dialer
Issue 3795 Couldn't unlock phone after "too many pattern attempts"
If any of these issues bother you, please take a moment to click the link and click on the white star to let Google know that it's important! Leave a comment for the devs while you're at it.
There are currently over 400 issues posted and you can add your own. This list is just for quick and easy reference for common issues among the readers of this forum.
Also, note - this is for issues with Android as a whole and not necessarily Motorola or Verizon.

I was and I am so excited with my phone. How can I be happy with my phone if some of the basic features are not working properly? I am very frustrated with my phone not because of the bugs but because it really affected my life.
1. Alarm issue, Motorola wants the user to be searching in the forums to find a solution to a core function? I got to work late by 1 hour the first time this occurred.
2. Yesterday suddenly when I unlocked my phone there was nothing on the home screens, and I have the stock home application. I was going right left, and nothing was there!
3. The music player suddenly starts playing. I was in a meeting and suddenly the music player starts playing! What should I say to the other people? There's a bug in my Milestone and Motorola is just too lame to fix it.

I'm attempting to port a normal Java program over to Android, however I am having a problem with a huge number of missing Java packages (e.g., Android Java does not have java.lang.management). Is there a way for me to work around this, such as by adding the Java modules that I need?

How do I make the Java assert statement work? By "work" I mean that a failed assertion should either stop program execution or at least log the failure. Currently, neither happens. I understand there is a run- time option to enable this (-ea), but I don't know where to specify it. Changing "PreferencesJavaInstalled JREsEdit JREDefault VM Arguments" has no effect, probably because those settings are not used for the Android execution.

I'm new to programming applications for the Android OS. As far as general architecture of the OS goes, I understand that processes are implemented as Linux processes and that each one is sandboxed.
However, I'm utterly confused on the IPCs and syscalls (if any) used. I know that the IBinder is a form of this; parcels are sent back and forth between processes and Bundles are array forms of parcels (?). But even that is still unfamiliar to me. Same with Intents. All in all, I don't understand what kinds of IPCs are implemented and how.
Could someone briefly explain to me the specific methods used by user level applications in Android OS to communicate with each other and the OS? I've done kernel programming and played with various IPCs in Linux (Ubuntu and Debian) so it would help immensely if this was all explained in relation to what I'm familiar with...

I downloaded the Android SDK and the Eclipse Plugin and installed them. When I however use the "Open Declaration" in Eclipse on basic Android functions and classes such as setOnClickListener or ListActivity it gives me an "Source not found"-Error.
The total Android source code seems to be 2.1 GB. Where do I get the source code of those functions that I call with the API to integrate it into Eclipse?
