What is the baddest, coolest, thing you can do on a Moto Droid without root access??
I'm trying to gain root and having some problems...
I had my droid rooted for some time, running droid mod 1.0. All was well until recently the battery life turned to shit (followed all guides to resolve recent OTA update issues, but still shitty.) Because of this, I decided I would go back to stock, since I couldn't justify the rom's features if the battery would kick out after 16 hours. So I returned to stock no problem and received the OTA to upgrade to 2.1.
After getting the upgrade to 2.1, I wanted to at least have root access to run a few programs. I followed this guide:
http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/63010-how-install-sprecovery-unrooted-2-1-ota.html
to get SPRecovery back on my phone. Everything went well, it all checked out. After that I used SPRecovery to install the root update.zip. This worked fine, the root access app is in my tray and everything seems to be fine... HOWEVER when opening programs that require root access (setcpu and adfree are the ones I've tried) they say I don't have root access. I have tried reinstalling the update.zip file to no luck. USB debugging is ON. Is there a special update.zip to gain root on 2.1 (I saw no posts about that)? Is there some setting I missed this time around that I didn't the first time I rooted?
I have had my droid rooted with Cyanogen 5.0.4 for about 2 weeks now and i just was looking at setcpu and it said it was running at 600mhz and it wont let me go higher now. I would like to know whats going on and what i can do to get my overclock back.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've have downloaded, unistalled, and re-downloaded DM Updater and when I open the app I get a message that reads: "Looks like your phone is rooted, but you have not given DM Updater access yet. You *must* check the remember box!"
I am indeed rooted, using sholes 2.0.5 (maybe thats why?) Never had any problems getting 'permission' for an app before. The dialogue box doesn't even pop up when I open DMU like it does with other apps the first time you run them and get the option to allow root access.
I read that official 2.1 (from another Droid forum) will be blocking root access. I too thought that this is kind of odd, so I thought to ask.

Called customer service, told me to get "uncorrupted" 2.1 system flash at Sprint store. Went to Sprint store. The flashed 2.2, said not able to flash 2.1. Phone now seems to be working, but I don't really know, since I have no history with this phone various system upgrades. It's new to me, as of last week. So, what is this root thing ?where can I get/read a primitive, newby, type instructional on this.
I have heard about people uninstalling base apps like Amazon and Google talk with root access. I just can't figure it out.
I have bugless beauty installed .8.5 and just can't for the life of me figure out how people are doing this.
Is anyone confirming or denying weather or not the droid x will be relativity easy to root? or is this unknown until the release of the phone. i think this might be the determining factor for me to move from the droid
View 8 Replies View RelatedI went to Install Rom Manager and after download it said error with privilege commands and Titanium backup says it cannot load due to root access. I've had SholesMod 2.05 on my phone and haven't loaded any other Roms, did I lose root somehow and if I did how come ROM Manager doesn't re-root? I can still get into recovery by power+x.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI am a new Motorola Droid user. My phone came with 2.0.1 installed. I installed Instant Root 1.04 and attempted to run it but got a message "unble to gain access". I started down this road because I wanted to backup my phone so I could do a hard reset. So installed "Titanium Backup". It wouldn't run because my rom wasnt rooted. So i have spend 4 hours researching and each item i find leads me to another issue or program to install. Most everything seems to involve rooting. One question I have is if there is a difference between 2.0.1 preinstalled an 2.0.1 ota?
For background I wanted to reset the phone because none of the 3rd party contact or phone dialing packages will read the native phone list or contacts. I owned a Omnia i910 and did a considerable amount of customization on it to I am reasonably familiar with digging around in the guts for a general user.
All this talk about different rooting methods and how some are unreliable makes me want to learn exactly what's required.
So far from looking at different exploits and methods to root different phones, the most simplest to understand is Peter Alfonso's Galaxy S rooting method posted today it seems all you need is to find a way on your device to install the following:
/system/bin/su (is this included in stock and replaced or just doesn't exist in stock systems?)
/system/app/Superuser.apk (it seems the Android OS has a "super user access" intent that this listens for -- so when apps try to access su this picks app it up?)
I have a probably silly and stupid question. I did the sbf file to bring my phone back to stock (I have to give my phone to a family member, long story). Anyway, when I did the sbf file it recovered all my apps, and one of them was SetCPU.
SetCPU won't run unless it has root access correct? I mean the fact that it was installed (and then uninstalled) it can't change anything without root access to the device correct?
I've been thinking about rooting my Droid for a little while, but I would like some clarification on the risks before I begin. I know almost nothing about Linux (but I am a tinkerer), but there seem to be very straightforward instructions on how to do everything I'm interested in. When people say that you could "brick" your phone by deleting/moving/renaming the wrong file, I want to make sure I understand the usage of "brick". My definition of bricking a device was that it was literally only good as a brick. It is BROKEN. For good. Kaput. Like a brick. However, Blackberry users (when I was tinkering with my Blackberry Storm) use the word "brick" to describe a phone that just needs its operating system reloaded. I have no problem reloading the Android ROM if I had to (provided a dump of the Droid ROM exists) but will I have the option?Does "brick" around here mean the phone is 100% broken, or that it needs the Android ROM reloaded?
View 13 Replies View RelatedI don't know how the whole app thing works.I hit market d/l play and delete if I don't like it. When I do this with windows a little bit of each program remains on my computer. Does the same thing happen with apps on my phone? Do I need to reformat my phone every now and then to clean it up like I do my computers?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to be able to record a quick vid of my little girl and email it to her grandma from the phone. Problem is it records in 3GP and so far have not found an easy way to get her computer (3000 miles away) to play these files.
So I guess I am looking for 1 of 3 things.
1. Way to record in some thing else. (AVI, MP3/4 etc.)
2. Way to convert it simply on the phone to a compatible type.
3. A way to send a file to Grandma that is pretty much click here and run this app.
very minor issue, but still bugs me. when i boot up my droid, i see the red eye-thing, but no "droid" voice. any ideas?

View 2 Replies View RelatedDoes anyone use the city ID feature that came with your droid X? I like how it shows the city that the call is coming from.
It is free for I think the first 30 days. After which to keep using it you will need to pay 1.99 per month.
Anyone know of a free app that would do the same thing? 1.99 a month is pretty ridiculous for what it does.
Just bought my wife her first Android phone, an original Droid (A855). Seems they're on sale everyhwere since the release of the X. Anyway, she absolutely HATES that Motoblur green side-pulling tab thing for answering a phone call. She just can't seem to get the hang of it. Is there some way to change that, or is there an app available that will change the interface and just give her a simple button to push for answering a call?

View 2 Replies View RelatedIv'e done alot of searching for the answer to my question with no luck. So I finally rooted and downloaded ROMmanager and installed bugless beast. I saw that there is a new WirelessTether app in my drawer. When I turn it on, it shows up as wifi on my ipod touch. Is this the same thing as a wifi hotspot?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am using Nex ROM and all of the sudden SetCPU says no root, Titanium backup gave me busybox error - and one other app gave me an issue too.
What gives? I made no changes in the past couple days - I want to try another ROM tonight, but I need to verify root and fix if needed before I waste my time.
I even tried flashing a custom rom (Fresh) on the last attempt and it just seems like it is giving me the Sprint stock Rom. Shouldn't the custom Rom look different? Once rooted do I still need to use Unrevoked method to grant superuser access for Apps?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've tried several times the hard factory data reset with no luck. I just want to start from scratch (actual scratch, without the SU app) and re-root. This SU app has remained since after the ICS OTA update without the phone even having root access anymore after then.
View 4 Replies View RelatedHere is the scenario:
Motorola Droid - Original
1. Rooted 2.1, then
2. OTA Stock Update to 2.2, then
3. Seem to have lost root, However - I still have the Superuser Permissions Icon.
I use Barnacle for WiFi Tether - I get a "Permission Denied" error when I try to start the application. I also went into the terminal emulator and tried an "su" which also gave a permission denied response. I tried "sudo" and also got permission denied response. Others have told me this is common with this progression of events. However, How do I now ROOT 2.2 in this scenario?
I just rooted my stock froyo with it! If this has already been discussed.
View 42 Replies View RelatedI used DroidMod to root when I had 2.01. When 2.1 became available, I "un-rooted" then forced update to 2.1. Well to be honest, it is really slow and laggy. I now want to go back to DroidMod, but nothing I have tried seems to work.
