Motorola Droid : Unable To Do Some Future Root Process Because Of A Glitch Now
Jun 19, 2010
I was running stock 2.1 on my Droid and I recently rooted it using the instructions here: How-To Root your stock 2.1 Droid. It went off without a hitch. Then, I went to Froyo 2.2, as found here: Download: Newer Motorola Droid Froyo Leak FRF57 | Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog.
After switching to Froyo, it appeared that I was having some issues with my root. I still had the superuser ninja, and I could still use Terminal Emulator. When I opened upTitanium Backup though, it asked me to allow permission which I did, and then it told me that I was not rooted (Setup behaved similarly). So I went and applied the update patch available on the Droid-Life page where I got Froyo and it appeared to work. To my knowledge I AM rooted. I have a custom boot animation and Titanium and Setcpu are working fine. Titanium says my root access is ok and that I am using busybox 1.15.3 from app. All is well, EXCEPT that when I try to use the cp command via terminal emulator I cannot. I recently tried to add a custom boot animation using the following:
su
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /Dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cp /sdcard/bootanimation.zip /system/media/bootanimation.zip
mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
exit
After the first line of code I got:usage: mount [-r] [-w] [-o options] [-type] device directory
After the second line however I got the error cp not found. HOWEVER, I was able to apply the boot animation using root explorer. Also, i tested the command busybox and got busybox not found. I can still utilize cd /system app though.
Basically I need to know if I am only partially rooted. I am having a ball with this phone and I would hate to be unable to do some future root process because of a glitch now.

what does the root process actually change? Is it changing the boot loader, the rom, or both? If I decide that I don't want to be rooted, would flashing the sbf restore EVERYTHING that rooting does, back to normal? Like would a rooted and then flashed and a non rooted phone would be identical in every single way?

I have a non-rooted Motorola Droid running 2.2 and I want to root to try out a ROM. I want to make sure I do this right. I don't want to lose any data (pictures, texts, etc) and I don't want to lose any apps. I've read a bunch of threads and it sounds like this is the general order I should proceed in:
1 - Backup data with MyBackupPro
2 - Root
3 - Backup apps with Titanium Backup
4 - Install ROM
Is this correct? Am I missing anything? Will the root method or ROM make a difference in terms of the process?

I was rooted in 2.1 and lost root when upgrading to 2.2. Ninja ICON still appears. I tried to root using the instruction in DroidLife. The one click root failed with a rc 12. The Android SDK package that I downloaded was for 2.2. What do I need to do to get root in 2.2

I Just installed a new theme (Live Wire) for my Lithium Mod Rom. Don't know if there is a connection, but when I need to update an app, I get the message something like "process android media process stopped unexpectedly" and it will not allow the update. Everything else works well. I have turned it off for awhile, and have done a battery pull.

I'm having a problem downloading Easy Root..I bought it once, refunded it because I didn't have anough money in my account, then bought it again the same day...andnow it finally went through this morning and it says purchased because I got paid this morning...but when I try to click install it says "Download unsuccessful"...I've tried everything to get it to install but it won't work and I can't refund it again. If I could refund it again I would be able to successfully install it like I did with Rom manager and setCPU.

So, today as I was rushing to get on the train after school I needed to make a phone call that would determine what train I would take. Of course, since it was time sensitive my droid decided not to make our receive calls. I would dial the number and hear nothing but silence even tho the call had connected. The party on the other end was getting the call but we could not hear each other.only silence. I had to reboot twice at which point I had a number of voice mails from the person i was calling trying to see what was happening. My phone is not rooted and I just have some basic popular apps. Is this just an occasional smart phone glitch or have others had this happen?

The calender sync feature puts in all future events but no past ones. This happens on both exchange and google calenders. The synch does not eliminate the past events on the exchange server on on my laptop google calender. My blackberry had a setting for this. I can not find a similar setting which allows me to retain the past events on the Droid.

In my Prius's GPS, I can save the location of where the car has been, and use that for future navigation need. In Droid, I don't exactly see a way of saving the current location into something like a contact so I can come back in the future. And there's no street address (inside a vast private property), so that's not going to work either.

I just got the Motorola Droid a month ago and I cant help but think that soon if not already the processor inside it will be obsolete and start to not be strong enough for future apps/games and/or Android updates. What do you guys think?

looking for some educated feedback on this, is the droid really better in terms of power than the eris? i returned the eris because i thought it was too slow and didn't stack up to what the droid is, but was i wrong?
i look at the verizonwireless website and they have the same stats, except for the keyboard of course. but then i hear some htc users say that the eris is just as powerful as the droid and can do everything that the droid can in terms of performance. on the other hand i get people telling me that the droid is the 'powerhouse' and ive read that the droid is the 'high-end' phone. people have told me about better cpu/processor/memory - is this true and is it noticeable? and will it effect the phones longevity compared to the eris for the future? i heard that it will as more updates comes out... someone told me that the eris will never be up to par with the droid hardware wise and that the droid is the safe bet if you want the most from future updates ... also read that the eris will be 'long in the tooth' (old) faster.

gradual steps/mistakes...
1. installed clockworkmod from playstore
2. tried to access superuser...but there was some issue with that..
3. when i restarted my phone using vol- key and power button i entered into hboot mode, from where i enter clockworkmod...
4. full wiped the phone, cache and everything that was given in instruction of icecold sandwich..
5. icecold sandwich was there in sd card as zip file....so i chose the "install zip from memory card option"..

I finally took the plunge tonight on a whim with the help of Mahalo Cat, Thanks Bro, here is what I did so far, and I will keep adding to the original post as I see fit
My Software build is 2.27.651.6
I had both the Universal Androot and the Rom Manager on my phone already downloaded. I then was chatting with MC and simply hit the Universal Androot and rooted, LOL. Then I checked to see if I had SuperUser and I did. I then open the Rom Manager and had a blank screen for about 15 seconds and then there seemed to be a delay in the response of my phone, but then all came back, I then flashed the ClockWordMod recovery and then gave it superuser permission, then it brought me to a menu screen, where I then proceeded to scroll down to do a Nandroid backup, called it Stock_2.1 with no spaces "Very Important" and then it took about 3 to 4 minutes to do a full back up and then said back up was done. I then hit reboot phone in the menu. So that is it for tonight, I will play with it like this for a bit, then on the weekend I will flash a different ROM for the heck of it and see what that is like.

when i had my Evo, i would go to take a picture and the LED's would stay on the whole time while i took the pic and looked great.on the DX, the flash only comes on right when you actually take the picture. i find the pics arent as good on the DX, not necessarily because of the way the LED's act. but in general.is there any way to get the LED's to act like they do on the Evo? i think it may help the camera focus better at night

This isn't a "when will the OTA Update come?" or "will I lose root?" I am wondering how the OTA update process begins? We've just about all read that Motorola has posted info on Facebook stating that 2.1 will be available this week (or next'when' is actually irrelevant). So is it Motorola who is responsible for making the 2.1 update suitable for our Droids? Meaning...are they the ones who have tested/tweaked Google's 2.1 update and made sure it works okay with the phone, added/removed features etc.? And not Verizon? Or does Verizon have the final 'say' as to whether or not the update is ready to go to our phones. Or do they even have any input at all? IIRC, the last update to 2.0.1 (at least the forced method) everybody was downloading the file from Google servers. Maybe that was just coincidental as somebody leaked the info/link...I can't remember back that far. I used the force update method so I'm not sure how the OTA worked (I know how it works..just saying). Kinda rambling here.Basically, I want to know does Motorola push the update? Or do they send the files to Verizon and then they push it to us? And regardless of who does the pushing of the update, how will we know where the file came from? I saw an Admin asking in another thread for someone to PM him about the link/file/whatever. How would I, rooted or not, know exactly how to get the update.zip from the phone? Is there a link associated with the file that can be seen by a normal user?

I am trying to use RSD Lite to SBF to 2.2 OTA but it keeps on giving me the dreaded Failed flashing process. Failed flashing process. (0x7100); phone connected. I am running Windows 7 x64 and have the latest Moto drivers installed (4.7.1) and am running RSD Lite 4.8. I put my phone in bootloader mode and connected my USB. It is showing iup in port 1, but I am also getting a lot of N/A values. Is this normal?
IMEI/ESN/MEID: N / A
Technology: N / A
Software Version: N / A
Flex Version: N / A
Bootloader Version: v0x003001
DRM Version: N / A
I choose the SBF file and click start and it immediately gives me that error message. Very frustrating.

possible to prevent processes from starting on reboot/boot for Droid 2.1?
there's a few processes that are always running, that turn themselves on, which i infrequently use. a couple examples are Voice Search and Skype, which when I ended processes for, freed up a significant amount of memory and 4 processes. I'd like to be able to set them up something akin to what windows will do, where they are on manual startup, and only start when app is called on. I still want to use the apps, just don't want background processes running constantly.

Just came from an rooted droid eris. That was a HTC phone and while just getting familiar with the X it seems the process and procedures are a little different/more confusing. My brand new X came with 2.1 update1. Now my only reason/purpose for rooting is really only for custom roms(if even available or stable for the X yet, but not that important atm)/apps requiring SU permissions like wireless tether and setcpu.
Although I doubt I'll need to oc this beast. And tweaking the os to be better/faster/how I want it like removing bloatware. With that being said, like I said I am running 2.1 update1. And I am hearing something about the X getting Froyo 2.2 anyday now? Should I wait for that to hit my phone before I do anything?
