Motorola Droid :: Instinct - Pre -iPhone3GS - Storm 2 - Droid
Nov 10, 2009
I am an iphone 3GS user who for the most part have enjoyed the iphone in the less than one year that I have owned it. The iphone (not so much Apple) is a GREAT product which can be summed up using three words, "It just works"! However due to a recent move, I no longer have 3Gs service thus making the iphone more of a paper weight than a utility and productivity tool. I would not consider myself an iPhone fanboy because I was more attracted to the phone and the fact that"it just works" than I was to Apple as a company or the 100,000 apps that's often bragged about. A more fitting term would be that I am a fanboy of products that work.
I could no longer live without 3G service so I made the decision to switch to Verizon. I visited my local Best Buy store and was upfront with the lady by telling her that my intentions were to get the Droid which was due out in one week. I asked if I should wait a week or buy a phone only to bring it back one week later for the Droid? She said either way was fine with her so i bought the Storm 2 but did not port over my number. I figured I would have a chance to use features of both phones simultaneously and if I found myself having iphone withdrawals, my the service would still be active. While there I also pre-ordered the Droid. Since I knew I wasn't going to keep the Storm 2,I took no interest in the phone for the first two days. On the third day I decided to play around with the phone a bit and to my surprise, I actually liked it! Other than the antiquated browser, the Storm 2 is a great phone! In my opinion, it is more sophisticated than the iphone and more "adult like", if that makes sense.
Anyway, while waiting out my time for the Droid I continued to use the Storm 2 and to my surprise it continued to grow on me. I also continued to monitor the Androidforums and there seemed to be more problems with the Droid than raves. Thinking I could live with the fast but useless browser, I re-considered my plan to return the Storm 2 and the release date of the Droid came and went. I hadn't played around with the browser much so yesterday i decided to put the Storm 2 browser to the test by visiting a handful of my favorite websites. Needless to say, the experience was painful and regardless of how great a phone may be, it doesn't compensate for a lousy browser. At that moment I decided to get off the fence and return the Storm 2 for the Droid!
As soon as I got home with the Droid I decided to test out all the things that are most IMPORTANT TO ME....not the critics...not the fanboys....not the naysayers...but TO ME! I tried out a handful of my favorite websites and they all opened quickly, rendered nicely, and the navigation was flawless. Without reservation I can say i prefer this browser over iPhone's Safari which by the way is also a great browser.
Next test, apps! I am not a big fan of apps but they do come in handy from time to time so I visited the Android Market Place to see if I could find all the apps I currently use regularly on the iPhone.
Here are the apps I found and they all work:
LastFM
Pandora
Tip Calc
CIDR Calc
Barcode Scanner
Keeper
Live Football Scores
Movies
USA Today
Voice Recorder
Accuweather
A Online Radio
I also found Advanced Task Killer that even kills itself!!! LOL
A few apps I didn't find:
Yelp
USAA
ifitness (Does anyone know of a good workout app?)
Form Factor - No Problem!
Weight - No Problem!
Pinch & Zoom - Who cares!
Keyboard - No Problem!
You Tube - No Problem!
Battery Life -Problem!
Maybe because I was never blown away by the iPhone my transition to another phone has been easier than others. The Storm 2 made me forget about the iPhone and the Droid has made me forget about them both. Someone said the ultimate test to determine whether someone is an iPhone fanboy is by answering this question...."If the iPhone came to Verizon would you own one". For me the answer is absolutely No. Sure, "it just works" and that is a lot more than what can be said about most other phones (new or old) but the Droid "just works" and then some!
I am not naive as I read about the issues others have experienced but those issues are not on my deal breaker list. I have no problem waiting until Dec 11th for an OTA update. One thing I don't like is when people say, "this phone is new so of course there are going to be issues and those issues will be fixed"! There are NO guarantees people! For all who buy into this falacy, go check out the Palm Pre forum...those folks are still waiting and i was one who bought the phone on launch date and returned it less than three weeks later. Yep one can say I dodged that bullet. I also seen situations where waiting pays off. Go check out the now old Samsung Instinct forum. All those folks who waited ended up with a decent phone after multiple updates. Again, I was one who purchased that phone on its release date and jumped shipped after about 25 days. Again, there are no GUARANTEES and we all take a risk by buying a phone on release date and keeping it for 30+ days. Again I have to go back to the iPhone.....I have owned two and NEVER had one problem whatsoever. Again "it just works"! Most problems people have with iPhones are feature specific and not workmanship, etc. Of course there are many cases to the contrary but those cases are not the norm. With that said, i have an iPhone for sale if anyone wants to get in on early bidding!

It says it all in the title really. I'm just curious coming from my old Blackberry Storm if there is a similar full screen clock I can use for a bedside alarm clock?

For those of you who had an Instinct, there was a sports tab where you could make a category called "My Teams" and then in there put all the teams you follow. Then you select a team and see their entire schedule, previous scores and game data/stats.
Whats the equivilent to that on the Hero?

Does anyone who has been with Sprint a longish time remember those "Samsung Instinct versus iPhone 3G" videos that Sprint put out? It showed the Instinct side by side with an iPhone performing tasks: GPS, spoken navigation, SMS, MMS, etc. Each time, the Instinct did it better.
Here is a crude sample:

I just thought about the fact that I have the 8gb card that came in my storm. Verizon is sending a 2gb card but that is useless in my eyes and would rather use the 8gb card unless it will be too slow.

I know many of you are getting ready to make the jump from BB to the Incredible. I just had to have a way to back up my contacts.
TO ALL Storm users (and other users with 5.0, not sure if it works with 4.7.. should be able, havent tested it) you CAN backup your phone via backup assistant from Verizon. I did this yesterday and now have all of my contacts backed up on my account.
While the Tour and Storm 2 had the program pushed to their devices, I (and others) were still able to grab the link!
Simply download and install the backup assistant from the tour link.
http://mobile.vzw.com/download/BUA/BB9630/syncclient_ba_bb9000.jad
or try the Storm2 link if that one doesn't work (it should)
[url]
BOTH worked for me on my storm. they should work for you too.
** TO RESTORE on your new Droid Incredible**
When logged in to verizonwireless.com, you can simply select all contacts then export them as a .csv file.
After you do that, login to your gmail account (you have to have one to use an android device anyway) and you can import your contacts.
A more detailed rundown is here
How to Transfer contacts from your phone to your Android device
This is for the original droid, but will work fine! Just skip the top part about backup assistant
OR USE GOOGLE SYNC

A few days ago I updated to 2.1 . And the phone works great. Now the thing is that yesterday I noticed the battery was draining a little bit faster than usual, I had been using the Particle Storm Live Wallpaper, so I thought that was the reason. What was my surprise when I changed to an static wallpaper and noticed the battery kept going down really fast. I checked the battery usage and it said that Wifi was draining 33%, Screen 20 something and the live wallpaper only 3 %. Is it normal for Wifi to drain so much battery? Does it depend on the use or what? Shouldn't 3g drain more battery than Wifi?

This is my first post although I have been reading this forum for awhile. I just went from a Moment (too big and bulky) to the Hero.
After searching and reading Im coming to the sad realization that the Bluetooth does not function correctly on the Hero? I just wanted to do a simple transfer of the contacts from my Instinct to the Hero? I dont want to use Google or any other email. Im surprised because there was no problem transferring my contacts from the Instinct to the Moment using Bluetooth. Both the Moment and the Hero have the same Android operating system so why is this happening?

I'm upgrading from my Droid 1 to the Droid X tomorrow and would like to start my use of the DX with it's new 32gb card in place of my old 16gb card from my Droid 1 but need to know if there's anything required to copy from my droid 1 16gb card to my new DX 32 gb card that would be required or helpful in the DX use.I will obviously transfer music/vids/pics but are there any essential files, apps, etc. that are needed.Or is it a good idea to use my paid MyBackupPro to copy the old Droid 1 apps/data for use in the DX larger memory card or is this not copatible to perform between the 2 devices?

For those of us that thought at first that the moment would be the Instinct Q, well it is in fact the q. Going into the diagnostic menu and looking at the version clearly says Instinct Q. I'm guessing Samsung didn't want a 4th instinct model so they renamed it the moment. just a guess though.

Many of you previously had some variant of the Instinct., Just curious as to what your thought are. Personally, I feel there is no comparison as to what can be done on the 2. Instinct>media phone, Hero>smart phone. Trust me though guys, the problems some of you are experiencing on the Hero is only a tiny drop in the bucket of what early Instinct adopters went through back in the day. The Instinct turned out to be somewhat decent, but believe me, I'm not looking back. Hero to the rescue!

Im a current instinct owner (i know PLEASSSSE dont judge) and my upgrade is alomst here, im getting the moment for sure as long as they don't announce another phone before my purchase, and i was wondering, do the 3 touch buttons flash every few seconds if you have an unchecked notification such as the moment does
ie. on my instinct if i miss a text message the phone will periodically blink ((every 5-10 seconds or so)) until i unlock it and check the message, i really like this feature as my phone is almost always on vibrate being a college studen and always running to one class or another, its just habbit to keep it like that all day, so it is nice to know when i have a missed message by this alert. i have read many articles saying this DOES NOT work but i have read a few saying it does... is it a feature you have to turn on or what?

They are at the final battle. It looks like we might have a fight on our hands since the Palm Pre just got the free hot-spot options from Verizon. March Smart Phone Madness Finals: Motorola Droid vs. Palm Pre Plus
The main points that I like to enjoy is: Droid beat out the phone that beat the iPhone, and the Droid got further in the brackets than any other Android OS phone Some of the progress is due to hardware, some due to following (over the Nexus'), but a lot due to the v2.01 (and now 2.1) version of the Android OS. Also, this poll is open ALL weekend - it does not close until April 5th, so we have tons of time...but then again, so does the Palm Pre. Let's have at 'em!

I have the original droid with 2.1 (still haven't got update) the phone has some problems like, restarting, cant update certain apps, unresponsive. i just got the phone in may 2010 an im starting to think its getting out dated. I once had it rooted to 2.2 but went back to stock for OTA 2.2 . But my question is, that do u think i can call verizon and tell them my problems, say its my 3rd droid and im getting tired of it. Since there not making the oringinal droid anymore do u think they'll let me upgrade to Droid X with little or no fee? i got the idea from another post, reading that someone had success with this trick?
