Now that in 4.4 you can use any SMS app, although hangouts will be default, I'm curious what are seen as the best SMS app alternatives out there? I've only really used the stock messenger on the N4 and use Hangouts for video mainly. If hangouts isn't the best SMS client, which should I look at. I've seen GoSms, Handcent, etc as popular alternatives in the play store.

Like locating a stolen phone, or wiping memory when stolen, etc.One idea, if the phone is lost or stolen: I use Locale. I could set a condition that triggers the "open shortcut" situation, and turns ON Google Latitude. The condition could be a calendar event. When I realize that the phone is lost or stolen, I could set a G-cal event that starts immediately, so when the phone syncs the calendar to Google, it triggers the Locale condition/situation.
-If you don't use Locale, you are probably really confused after reading that. That's ok.
-Google Latitude basically shows you and your friends on a G-map. That way, when it gets stolen, I could go to Latitude on my comp and find my stolen phone. It's bundled with Google Maps (I think).
I want to hear what you guys use for security on your phones. Whether it's a simple app that lets you find it around the house (Wheres My Droid), or something more complex, like the idea above.
Was wondering if Pdanet was the only option for tethering? I would prefer free but I would like to look at all my tethering options first.

Looking more in depth, it doesn't appear that I even HAVE an APN setting. Could this be accurate? Maybe I just can't find it?I have a Droid, recently purchased, on Verizon in the US, on ESD56.

View 15 Replies View RelatedSince this is a popular program, I thought someone would be able to answer a few quick questions on this before I purchase it:
1) Is there the option to backup to the SD card (which I am assuming is where you would want your backups to go, so that you do not lose them in case you need to do a hard reset?
2) Is there an option to back up all data onto your desktop, so that if you lose your phone and need to buy a new one, all the data can be put back onto the new Droid?
3) Are there any things that you CANNOT back up with this program? Will all the apps that you downloaded from the Market get saved as well as all the data that you entered into these programs? (like will all the notes that you entered into AK Notepad be saved, as well as the program itself?)
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and installed Eclipse 3.5 (Galileo) for Java Developers along with the Android SDK. When I add the following URL into the "work With" field under Eclipse's Install New Software menu:

No plugins appear between the "Work With" and "Options" sections. I understand I'm supposed to be able to select "Developer Tools". I get nothing. I've tried linking to http vice https. Also, downloading the zip from the android dev site itself yields the same result. When I run "Check for Updates", it comes back saying nothing to update. I also ran "Test Connection" for the above URL and it comes back positive.
Hey guys, I really liked the speediness of BS1.7 when I tried it yesterday, but I didn't like the subtle changes to the UI so I reverted back to the stock rom. Does anyone know if it's possible to customize a rom? My main gripe with BS was the bar at the bottom of the phone was changed from a gray/silver color to a transparent black. If I could change that and reinstall certain apps that weren't included (like Sprint Nav), I think it'd be perfect. If not, then is it possible to flash a kernel using the stock rom? I'm mainly trying to overclock the cpu.

I have barely started playing with Mecanto. It's just hard for me to believe that they will allow you to upload any amount without any type of payment - unless they are planning to charge a considerable amount for the app later on. I do have Pandora installed, and I love it. But sometimes I just want to be able to queue up my own playlist of songs.
im running miui and i use swype so i deleted the stock keyboard and now the language and keyboard part of the setting menu force closes and when i long press in a text box and i select input method no options come up and i tried reinstalling it which is HTc_IME.apk and then phone reboots, and as you might know MIUI can be a little unstable but still.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was about to write that I didn't quite understand the USB options that are given to me when I click on my USB connection in the Notifications screen when I'm hooked up to my PC. When I switch to "charge only", my Windows Media player still sees what's on the Droid X (Android 2.1), and when I try to use Media Share on the Droid X, it still says "SD card busy". But now I'm in a real pickle, because I changed the setting to "charge only", unhooked the phone, and then reconnected to the PC. Now the USB connection is no longer showing up in the Notifications area, despite multiple reconnections, and now WMP doesn't see what's on my phone, and now I can't figure out how to switch back to one of the other options. FOLLOW-UP: After restarting the phone and the PC the USB connection is working again, so that was just a separate glitch. Getting back to the main point: even when I'm in Charge Only mode, the PC can see the phone's contents in File Manager. Windows Media Player doesn't recognize the phone as DROID as it does when I'm in Windows Media Sync mode, but instead calls it E: and still lists its contents. Bottom line: what is the significance of the four modes: PC Mode, Windows Media Sync, USB Mass Storage, and Charge Only?

A few weeks ago, my car was burglarized and I lost my laptop, mp3 player, camera, video camera, gps navigation, gps watch. I'm looking for a device that can do everything that I've lost but won't hold me down with a phone contract.
Something sleek enough to fit in my pocket while I'm running or doing physical activity, crystal clear sound quality(very important), takes excellent pictures and video, GPS navigation for navigation and if possible(but not necessary), could track my movements like a garmin forerunner, check email over WiFi, great battery life. I've never owned a smartphone so I don't know if the features I need of the device works if I have no contract with it.
No iphones please, I don't want to be bogged down with itunes. I'm looking at Garmin-Asus Nuvifone or Droid X or Evo 4G or Nexus One(love the clean design) but I don't know if there are better options for me.
I tripped walking down the street with my friends today beyond skinning and cutting up my arms and knee's and getting road rash the fall also took a nasty toll on my incredible. It cracked throughout the screen and it is slowly turning a greenish tint color around the cracks and throughout the screen. It is becoming completely unusable. I got my original droid incredible back in may and I just received a like new replacement a week ago. I do NOT have insurance. What are my options here? I have also invested over $170 into this phone through cases, extended battery and micro SD card.

It had options like "bootloader" and "power down" on it so I used the rocker bar to scroll and get out of it by powering down. My question is this: Someone I know was talking about spyware that can be put on laptops and computers and now this happened when they were around. Is this just a glitch or could it be indicative of spyware having been put on my phone?

This is problem I face: I am waiting for a huge page to load, or downloading something from the market and I am not interacting with the phone. I have the screen set to turn off in 30 seconds to conserve battery. Every time the screen turns off I have to enter the unlock pattern!
Here is what I would like to do:
Only lock the phone and require the unlock pattern if the phone is manually put to sleep with the power button, or if I haven't touched the phone in XX minutes. It would be great if the screen could turn off, but NOT require the lock pattern until its been off for XX minutes. How to do this for free or a cheap app? I am on an HTC Incredible.
Does anyone else wish that the Android Market had sort options? I know when I browse the Market, I can filter by paid apps vs free apps. That's part-way there... I also want to be able to sort by rating/ranking (# of stars), number of times downloaded, cost, and so on. Also, carry these sort options over to the Search. It's even worse as you have paid and free apps mixed together.

As far as I can tell from my research, this has not been fixed, which is really frustrating as it's been the case since 1.5.What other options do I have? There are plenty of games on the market which use sound, so there must be something out there!

Well, when I scan the barcode, three options come up, two of which are to share the URL, the other, to open the browser. Naturally, I pick the first to open the browser only to receive an error message "There are no matches in android market for the search: XXXX". What am I doing wrong? Also, I wanted to make sure my build number was correct as it suggests at the top of the thread, but I couldn't find anything like that on the HTC website.
