How To Build WiFi Based Headphone On Android
Aug 20, 2013
It seems that Android platform accepts four types of audio interface: built-in speaker/mic, plug-in speaker/mic, USB speaker/mic and bluetooth speaker/mic. Can we add a fifth audio interface that comes through WiFi? There are multiple use cases for such interface, e.g., we can replace speaker/mic on phone with the ones on laptop through WiFi and enjoy better audio quality. There are multiple apps that do the reverse (use Android phone as an external Mic for desktop) but no app in this direction. We need to add a new audio interface that can be accepted by Android OS. We may also modified the existing bluetooth driver so that it handles the WiFi interface instead of bluetooth (we lose the ability of bluetooth connection but in my case this is acceptable). I don't mind if I have to root the phone. What modules/drivers should I modify, the tiny-alsa library/driver I guess? Any similar codes or apps?

I am looking for an app to do the following things. Change ringer setting when getting a call from a certain number. i.e. Turn the ringer on when I call it from my google voice number in case I loose it.Also, to run a script when connecting to a specific wifi network.I believe Locale can do at least the first one, but I was wondering if there were any cheaper apps to do this as I have no interest in the gps features of locale.

Does anyone knows if the wifi networks for android phones are based on Access Point Names (APN) ? I ask because in my android application I plan to overwrite some fields in all APN's to disable cellular network, but I still want to have available the wifi for the user.

At my college we have this annoying web based login and my android phone doesn't like it. It connects easily but when I go to either browser or opera mobile it doesn't load the login page the browser still thinks it has no connection. Is there anyway to approach this in a better way or bypass the login or at least save it to automatically do it each time.I need a wifi connection! every building has it. annoying this is once you move to a different building the settings are changed(probably because of the routers) and I have to redo it. of course it never works

For those of you trying to squeeze as much time out of the battery as possible, I came across this nifty program which I don't think has been mentioned yet: AppBrain: Y5 - Battery Saver - Android app on AppBrain Official: Y5 Battery Saver: Home. When you connect to a Wi-Fi network, it uses the GSM base tower identifier (CellID) to determine the location of the Wi-Fi network and stores it in memory. It does not use the GPS. I saved my home network earlier this afternoon and went out, Wi-Fi was turned off while I was out, then after I came home and started using my phone, I was connected again, so it seems to be working so far.

Wouldn't it be cool if I could tell my phone to switch wifi on and switch 3g reception off when it senses that I am at work or home based on my gps coordinates and then reverse that when I'm on the road i.e. not at those coordinates I set. Is there an app that does this?

Any app which allows to set the preferred wifi network to connect to?
specifically, I want my phone to always connect to network "A" whenever it becomes available, and even if it is currently connected to other networks with a stronger signal.

I downloaded the Android 2.2 source code and try to build it. When I executed the make command, I got an error here like this build/core/java.mk:20: *** frameworks/ex/common: Invalid LOCAL_SDK_VERSION '8' Choices are: current 4 5 6 7. Stop. Then I changed the frameworks/ex/common/Android.mk to LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 8 from LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 7. Next place, build/core/java.mk:20: *** external/jsr305: Invalid LOCAL_SDK_VERSION '8' Choices are: current 4 5 6 7. Stop. I changed the external/jsr305/Android.mk to LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 8 from LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 7
Last one, build/core/java.mk:20: *** external/guava: Invalid LOCAL_SDK_VERSION '8' Choices are: current 4 5 6 7. Stop. I changed the external/guava/Android.mk to LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 8 from LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 7
By these changes the code started the compilation.
1. Why the error occured?
2. Changes which I did is correct or not?

We all know about Apple asking Google to not include multi-touch but according to an Apple employee they also asked not to include the 3.5mm input due to an interesting patent. http://www.googleandblog.com/why-no-g1-35mm-headphone-jack/3750/

Is there an API in android to access the headphone hardware input? Ideally I'd like to be able to directly read the incoming voltage/current. Accessing this in either Java or the NDK would be fine. Preferably if there's a way to do this on non rooted phones.

I am looking into writing some apps for Android phones that work with audio. These phones do not have a line in jack but do have headphone jacks that work with some headsets that include a microphone. Is it possible to work with audio coming in through the headphone jack if I plugged in something like a portable computer mic?

I have an HTC Evo and a FiiO E7 headphone amp that I use to drive my headphones. I am looking for a way to output the audio from my phone to my amp without having to use the 3.5 mm jack. This is because the DAC in the FiiO is much better than the phone's DAC, thereby giving me much better quality sound. When using my computer, the process is very simple: I plug in the amp to the computer using a USB to mini-USB cable and then connect my headphones to the amp. The computer sees the amp as a plug and play external sound card, and it works perfectly. Is there any way to do this with my phone? I know that the iPods and iPhones support this through Apple's proprietary dock connector (I can do this with my iPod). To clarify: I want to use the mini-usb or mini-hdmi cable on my phone to output a digital audio signal to the mini USB jack on my amp/DAC. Also, the amp is battery powered, so as long as I can get the two devices talking, I don't need to worry about power.

I may be taking my Evo back to Best Buy already. I have tried a couple of different 3.5mm plugs and they are all loose in my phones jack. If I move the phone around it sometimes loses connection. These plugs were the same one's that worked fine with my Hero. Anyone else having this problem?

Has anyone found an app or mod that allows you to increase the maximum audio output of the evo? I know others have been complaining about the maximum audio level being too low. I get in my car and just can't hit that level I'm looking for. Haven't had this problem with other audio devices.

Make sure to push your headphone plug ALL the way into the jack of your fascinate! some of us thought we had defective headphone inputs on our fascinates but we realized that there is a considerable amount resistance making pushing the plug all the way in just a bit tough. Hope this helps! and dont be so quick to run back to your nearest cell phone dealer.

Desire tell me if it works ok with headphones that didn't come with the device? After reading the thread about music skipping with third party headphones plugged in, I did a little bit of research and discovered that this problem seems to be linked to devices with a recessed headphone jack, like the Droid Eris, iPhone, Nexus One, etc. They tend to only play nice with the supplied headphones, and certain other brands. Turns out the iPhone is actually pretty infamous for it. I have pre-ordered the Desire, but I am considering switching to the Legend, as this has a flat/normal headphone jack, and as I really hate those in-ear headphones that are supplied, I'm going to want to use something other than the supplied HTC ones.
