I have an mysql database with some sports results in it. I want to write an android application to display these data on mobile phones.
I´ve searched on the internet for this issue and i think it is not possible to have a direct connection between the mysql database and the android application. (Is this right?)
So my question is the following: How can i have access in the android application to the mysql database in order to display some of the data?

A number of images are "built in" to my app. They are stored in the drawable folder. I'd like to give the option of sending one of these images via mms (or even email) to someone in the user's address book. All the examples I've seen are sending images that are stored somewhere other then the default Eclipse drawable folders.

I am currently making an app which works with images. I need to implement functionality where the user picks a file stored on the SD card. Once they pick the picture (using the Android gallery), the the file-location of the image will be sent to another Activity, where other work will be done upon it. I have seen similar posts here on SD, but none to answer my question specifically. Basically this is the code I am doing when the user clicks the "Load a Picture" button:
// Create a new Intent to open the picture selector:
Intent loadPicture = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PICK,
android.provider.MediaStore.Images.Media.EXTERNAL_CONTENT_URI);
// To start it, run the startActivityForResult() method:
startActivityForResult(loadPicture, SELECT_IMAGE);
From that code, I then have a onActivityResult() method to listen to the call-back:
// If the user tried to select an image: if(requestCode == SELECT_IMAGE) {
// Check if the user actually selected an image: if(resultCode == Activity.RESULT_OK) {
// This gets the URI of the image the user selected: Uri selectedImage = data.getData();
// Create a new Intent to send to the next Activity:
Intent i = new Intent(currentActivty.this, nextActivity.class);
// - Problem Area -
// I would like to send the filename to the Intent object, and send it over.
// However, the selectedImage.toString() method will return a
// "content://" string instead of a file location. How do I get a file
// location from that URI object? i.putExtra("PICTURE_LOCATION", selectedImage.toString());
// Start the activity outlined with the Intent above: startActivity(i);
As the code above states, the uri.toString() will return a content:// string instead of the file location of the selected picture. How do I obtain the file location?
Another possible solution is to send over the content:// string and convert that into a Bitmap (which is what happens in the next Activity). However, I don't know how to do that.

Here is what I am trying to do:
- have a database that contains a word, and the name of an image file associated with that word.
- the words from the database will be displayed in a listview
- when the word is selected, a new activity will start displaying the word and the image in an image view.
Would it be best to store the terms in an array and have the list view populate from this array and then pull from the database onitemclick? Or can the list view be populated with the terms from the database?
Will android be able to display the image if the name of the file is stored in the db?

So, Im having an interesting problem. About a month ago installed the clockwork rom manager and installed the clockwork recovery to use the app. I could never get the recovery to show up so I deleted the app. I also deleted everything on my sdcard having to do with it. Since then I have used the RA recovery and have made and restored nandroid backups with know problem. Yesterday I went to make a nandroid backup and the clockwork recovery came up for the first time ever. when I went to restore a nandroid it said I didn't have any cause i never made any with clockwork and it must not look in the same folder. Im assuming there must still be a file somewhere to delete but I cant find out. And I can't restore any of my backups. Im using white widow 3.1 and haven't had this issue before with this rom.

I'm looking for an app that will allow me to view photos stored on my computer. I can access the computers on my home network from my Incredible using Astro or ES File Explorer "LAN" and open various file formats such as .pdf, .doc, .xls fine on my Droid; however, I am unable to open and view any type of image files (.jpg, .bmp, .gif, etc.) unless they are stored on my SD card or in the Droid memory itself.
When I try to open a image file stored outside the Droid, nothing appears on the Droid screen. I have installed several "image viewer" apps, such as Astro and 3D Gallery, none of which seem to be able to open remotely stored files. When I "click" on an image file, I see "Loading Image", but all that appears is a black screen with left and right arrow scroll buttons -- no pictures. Any advice, other than to copy and paste image files to my SD card, which then allows me to open and view them? I did get the 2.2 update.

I have an Android app that saves a text file directly onto the phone, in the app's install directory. I need to allow the user to create a new email, attaching this saved text file. When I start the intent to send the email, everything shows up in Gmail correctly, but the attachment does not get sent. All of my searches on stack overflow seem to only deal with attaching an image file from the SD card. Below is the code that I used. Please let me know if I have done something incorrectly.
File myFile = new File(getFilesDir() + "/" + "someFile.txt");
FileOutputStream stream = null;
if( file != null )
steam = openFileOutput("someFile.txt", Context.MODE_WORLD_READABLE);
stream.write(some_data);
Uri uri = Uri.fromFile(myFile);
Intent sendIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_SEND);
sendIntent.setType("text/plain");
sendIntent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_SUBJECT, subject);
sendIntent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_TEXT, email_text);
sendIntent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_STREAM, uri);
file.close();
startActivity(Intent.createChooser(sendIntent, "Email:"));
I've also tried sendIntent.setType("application/octet-stream"); but that didn't make a difference. I'm at a loss for why the file doesn't attach and get sent.

I want to add a big feature to an application i am developping, but as this feature interest few people and is quite independant from the main part, I would like to put that in a seperate "plugin" application.Does anyone knows any design patterns, snippets, "reference" examples about such design?In particular that separate plugin application should be able to access some tables in the main application DB. Is it possible to do that without broadcast receiver? - the main application uses a TabActivity: is it possible that a the tabactivity instanciates an Intent Activity that is part of the plugin? - does the plugin can access main application preferences (not sure this would be necessary, but better to anticipate the question!) is it possible from the plugin to access main applications ressources?At least the 2 first points are mandatory for me.

I have to make a dedicated image viewer app for Android 2.x.
There are too many jpeg image files: about 2000~ jpegs, over 100MB.
I want access the image files with their file names,
but I couldn't find such an example.
By the way, is it okay to put many image files in /res/drawable folder?
I heard that the android application cannot be installed on sdcard and
the program repository is very small so 100MB app cannot be installed generally.
I found some examples which download the large data files on sdcard online,
but I cannot run a web server to host the data files,
and I must upload the fully packaged program on Android Market. (Should I build one apk file?)
What are the best practices for managing too many resource images (or something) in Android?

<Gallery
android:id="@+id/galleryView"
android:layout_below="@id/imageViewMap"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="100sp"
android:layout_weight="1" />
in AlbumView.java
gallery = (Gallery) mView.findViewById(R.id.galleryView);
ImageView view = gallery.getItemAtPosition(position);
Unfortunately the above code is returning null. Can you please help in this matter.

I'm using HTC Dream and trying to read the images stored in the "default" album folder of this phone. But I've yet to found out what's the folder path to those images file. do you know what's the path to that image folder? What would be the path patterns (if any) in other Android phones? I don't need to set any additional permission to access those files, do I? Do you know how I can build a "file browsing" widget in my activity? I've searched and seems like there is no such widget and I've to install app that does file browsing. In any case, how to incorporate that as a file-browsing view in my current activity?

I have a Nexus one and I have made a bit of a mess of it when loading a custom rom. Previously I'd rooted (without unlocking) the stock (2.2) rom before loading Cyanogen 6, later Cyanogen nightlies and finally eViL-NXSense-v1213. I was rather enjoying the last one but had severe stability issues which I think was due to using Titanium Backup and restoring data. I was in the process of re-imaging to eViL-NXSense-v1213 after clearing the SD card, data and various caches when something seemed to happen to the recovery image. I can get into the boot loader but if I select Recovery it shows the Nexus One logo indefinitely and doesn't respond to the power button being pressed, the same happens if I turn it on from cold.
Is it possible that the recovery image has somehow been corrupted? If so what can I do to restore a recovery image that will enable me to install a custom rom. I would prefer not to unlock the boot loader but will do it if necessary.

I'm making an Android Java app game (although this question applies to all languages really) and hope to release the first version soon. I'm nervous about how I save data in my game. My problem is that, if in a later update, I decide to store more data or store the same data in a different way, I need to be careful I don't lose or corrupt data for users that upgrade (i.e. I want users to be able to use data created by an old version in the new version, like their high scores from before).For example, say I want to save high scores in version 1.
